PGR 4 dev: “Not letting go ’til it’s done”

Microsoft seem to be shouting from the rooftops that Project Gotham Racing 4 is going to hit store shelves in September of this year, however Bizarre Creations have stated they don’t plan on letting this one be as rushed as some of their other attempts. They also promise that thanks to new abilities in the game, every race ever played can be saved and uploaded to servers. That’s anyone connected to Live, as many times as the player desires.

From Craig Howard of Bizarre, who Eurogamer got to speak to last week at E3:

“You can be in a world cup tournament - it gives you a nationality, so you can go and prove that you’re the best American racer or whatever. And you can watch the whole world cup. If you get knocked out, you can watch the people who beat you, and watch all their races too. It’s just all there. We’re trying to create a base for all racing enthusiasts.

“When you get to the end of a race, you can choose not to upload it, if you really want to. You’re not uploading an actual AVI.

Plus you can use keywords like ‘crash’ or ’slide’ or ‘Macau’, if you want to,” he says, “so when people do a search they can find you. You can rate them too - ‘that’s a wicked crash’ etc.”

This idea makes up part of the “PGR On Demand” idea seen last week at E3. It means that you can re-watch others or your own, if that kind of thing really interests you. Some may deem it a pointless feature, as who wants to watch others play when you could play your own races. However there will also be people who like this kind of thing, and it’s nice to have the option.

Eurogamer also got a chance to ask Bizarre’s business director Brian Woodhouse some questions about the release. PGR 3 was rushed out the door thanks to it being a launch title, but this time Bizarre feel they have more time to get things spot on, and promise this game won’t be snatched away from them.

“It [PGR 3] looked great, but we struggled a little bit to commit time at the end to really balance the game properly. This one, we’re not letting go ’til it’s done. We were disappointed with that. With 2 we probably got it right. With 1 we rushed it out as well. 3, you know, it was a launch title so we were under enormous pressure.

Following on from that, we’ve totally changed our development mentality. With a launch title, you’ve constantly got this issue with difficulty with the hardware and not getting the game up and running early enough. This time around, because we’re building it on a modular tech base we’re able to bring the game up really early and think about all of those things as we go through, instead of me saying to you as a game designer, ‘okay here’s the game, you’ve got two weeks [to balance it]’.”

Woodhouse also told Eurogamer they have spent a fortune on the game. However with improvements in the Kudos system, a new ’save every race’ feature, bikes being incorporated and all the weather effects, it’s a safe bet that they will see ample return when the game ships (hopefully) in September.

Best news all week!! BC are gonna make this game into a system seller and I fully support this decision because the end result will be gaming heaven.

I bet within a week of it’s release, they’re in dire need of a patch.

Ha ha…yeah I bet

Let’s have a little faith, I trust BC.

As long as they don’t knacker the online leagues and lobby like they did before, I will be happy. It was almost impossible to get a game at some points.

Shame they won’t be able to control some of the asses driving it either, but hey that’s onlne ‘gaming’ for ya!

ohh those were the days, sittin in a ranked lobby waitin for people only to get moved into a full room then get moved right back to an empty one and sit for another 30 mins. ;(

LOL, what’s up with Microsoft Game Studios developers recently ? All acting up like little kids, sueing each other, invalidating E3 announcements ….. wth ?!

At this point I wouldn’t even be surprised anymore if Bungie announced Halo 3 as a PS3 exclusive :P *runs for cover*

Seriously, you don’t do these kinda things in public. It’s a good thing they want to spend the time they need but they should never invalidate announcements made by their publisher just a few days earlier. That’s really bad ….

True, but I’d rather believe the developer than the publisher to say when it’s ready or not.

Indeed, but developer and publisher must speak with one voice to the public. Everything else smells like trouble. Looking at recent news events like this gain huge weight when you look at the bigger picture.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds kids.
If Big Daddy MS wants this out in Sept, then it’ll be out in Sept.

delay it till December or 2008 for all I care. Too many good games this Fall/Winter. Crowded. We need a couple of delays. COD4, Halo3, GTA, Bioshock, Mass Effect… jeez.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. You be quiet over there.

But really, Bizarre, take all the time you need to make it good, because after PGR3 you have a tough act to follow.

As long as they are not force feeding the bikes and the winter weather conditions, PGR4 is going to be so much fun!

This would be a perfect title for early 2008. Forget about competing with the holiday game rush.

Delay it and make it perfect. I’ll only buy it if it comes out in early 2008.
