IGN to exclusively announce ‘unexpected X360 game’
Douglas Perry, editor at IGN, announced on the IGN boards that he is going to be doing a very special announcement today about a game we “would never, ever have expected.”
In his first post he writes:
Check back in the early afternoon PST for an exclusive story on a game you would never, ever have expected. IGN Xbox 360 will have the first details, news, screens, and an interview with the company’s president. Can you guess who it’s with?
No Doug, we’re no psychics so we cannot guess who it’s with. Please tell us more! Which he does:
OK, so… just for clarification, we’re hoping to post a story around noon tomorrow, maybe earlier — that’s PST time (California time) that nobody has heard about. It will be on the Xbox 360 site. It’s an exclusive Xbox 360 game. None of your guesses are correct so far. I was totally unable to guess what it was until I heard about it two days ago, and I’m still amazed by the subject matter and the people putting it out. Sorry to be such a tease about it, but I haven’t even told my team about it yet. I can’t say a word.
Anyway, I expect the range of reactions to be wide in range and long in wind. Heh. And, in order to avoid the mess that happened last fall with a certain midnight review that never happened ( ), let me put it this way: Don’t stay up all night. Please do not. The story won’t be up until tomorrow — Friday, March 3, around noon PST at the earliest. Go to sleep, do whatever, beat people up in Fight Night Round and then gather round here about noon-ish. I should have an update on the exact timing earlier than that, but not everything is tied up tight. There are still a few loose ends before I can concretely give an exact time.
Until then I look forward to your guesses. This should be fun.
Damn, more empty blahblah and no information. Well, speculation and rumors galore: what exclusive game we would never have expected is Doug going to be showing, and what company will be releasing it? Will he be interviewing Bungie’s CEO about Halo 3’s impending release? Or will it be something far more realistic? Feel free to come speculate with us in the comments below or on our forums.

Doubt it’s Halo 3, because that’s not a game we would “never have expected”.
“I’m still amazed by the subject matter” - that’s the bit that’s got me intrigued. Could be something really controversial (like Manhunt), could be something really bizarre (fishing/shopping/eating sim).
Oh and of course, “sometime Friday” in the US will probably translate to “sometime early Saturday” over here in the UK

There’s some puzzling things in Doug’s remarks, especially “I’m still amazed by the subject matter and the people putting it out.” That indicates it’s a game from a developer or publisher that is known for doing a completely different genre, for example id Software doing a next-gen Teletubbies simulator or something.
My money is on Rayman for Xbox Live ;). I really hope it’s Microsoft buying Rockstar, that would awesome

Speculations I hear on other sites are for a part that MS would have acquired Rockstar, but that wouldn’t fit the profile of “doing something you wouldn’t have expected”. We expect Rockstar to do another GTA, not Barbie’s Boring Bughunt or something.

If he’s amazed by WHO as well as what, it has to be someone entirely unexpected. Therefore it’s not going to be the likes of Bungie, because they’re pretty well tied in with Microsoft. Sony don’t REALLY produce their own games, simply use other people. That only leaves either Nintendo or Apple as the big rivals to MS that you’d never expect, and I don’t really see Apple developing a console game. It *has* to be Nintendo. If it’s not Nintendo, I’ll be pretty disappointed, I have to say.

And indeed Nintendo first party titles are out of the question.
My bet is on Pirates from Bungie (Doug could indeed be overhyping something we all know already) or something from Square Enix, or something from Rare (but what unexpected thing could they do after simultaneously releasing Kameo and PDZ which are complete opposites?) or something with GTA/Rockstar. Metal Gear Solid would also be a far-fetched option, the producer didn’t rule out possibilities at the time, but it wouldn’t fit the profile of “some people doing a game we wouldn’t expect of them”.
My money is on a GTA or MGS title, I hope I’m not wrong ^-^

PLEASE let it be a sequel to Freelancer. It’s unexpected (the first one was on PC and Digital Anvil has since been terminated by MS). It’s a big title, it sold pretty damn well and had a relatively long salesrun for a computergame. Could be it, hope it is too, I loved how easy it was to get in to. Just hope they’d make a sequel a bit more durable with a dynamic economy and the ability for faction wars (and ofcourse something like 128-player dedicated servers :P)
The horrible thing about this is that we’re all getting excited and hyped-up with our guessing, feeding off each other’s hype, etc.
And it’ll end up being some new, generic FPS game.
I’m ready for it to be disappointing - I’d expect nothing less from IGN, but I really hope it’s not!

I would rule out Halo 3 because - why would MS blow such a huge announcement on an individual website. That is something that is more in line with an E3 type announcement that would help steal some of Sony’s E3 thunder from their announcements, like their new top secret controller design where you can now take out a kangaroo at 50 ft.
I really hope it’s Killer Instinct… but that was already confirmed from Rare, so that can’t be it…. Halo 3, Forza 2, Killer Instinct, Banjo Kazooie etc. are all titles we know will come out, so those can’t be it… THIS BETTER BE GOOD!!

It cant be any of the old rare games that were made for Nintendos consoles because nintendo owns the rights to those specific games. Such as Goldeneye 007.
