GTA IV delayed until 2008
Take Two has just announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has been delayed until the 2nd quarter of 2008. The financial update states that the game is being pushed back to allow for more development time.
Take Two’s Chairman Strauss Zelnick had this to say
With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games. Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait. We owe it to the game’s millions of fans, to our dedicated development team, and to our shareholders to make sure that Grand Theft Auto IV is a groundbreaking gaming experience that takes maximum advantage of next generation technology.

The new consoles are allowing us to create the Grand Theft Auto game we always dreamed about. Every aspect of the game and its design has been completely transformed. The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits. The top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are working closely with the team in Edinburgh right now, helping us to fully leverage the power of both platforms. As always, our goal is to surpass even the wildest expectations of the game’s fans, and to create the ultimate high definition video game experience.
The game will be delayed until April 2008 at the earliest. Sad news for any fan waiting for the title. Will it be worth the wait?
Update: In a conference call with investors, Take Two officials have stated that the decision to delay the game was made after reviewing a build of the game yesterday. The problems that are forcing the delay are “purely technical problems”

LOL. Jumping to conclusions. One of two things will happen, either Sony has to play a licensing fee (and damages) or the patent will be found invalid due to prior art (I think this is more likely).

This really puts the nail in the PS3 coffin. There are absolutely no games coming out this year for the PS3. The christmas sales of the PS3 will be very low because of this. The 360 on the other hand still has many great games coming this fall so it’s another win for MS this holiday season.

Well, it only takes a little bit of common sense to figure some of these things out.
Ask yourself, why would Sony come out with an announcement about an exclusive game from Rockstar right about the time Rockstar delays GTAIV. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Coincidence? Your naive.
Which company does this hurt the most? Sony or Microsoft? Yeah, it’s Microsoft. Sounds like a ‘Chalabi’ type deal to me MS.
As many have stated, the 360 is the lead console and to date we have yet to see any PS3 screens or heard of a playable PS3 demo. Give Sony credit, they are working their butts off to make sure MS don’t run away with the lead.
Madden will run better on the 360 but Sony doesn’t really care or can’t do much there especially with Peter Moore at the helm. Not so with GTA. They cannot affort for the same thing to happen with that franchise.
Phil Harrison admitted that they just really got additional development tools to the developers not so long ago to help with the cell. Hmmmmm. Maybe someone should ask Rockstar when they got theirs.

I have no problem with this whatsoever. It lets the developers put the game they wanted to put out, and not what M$ wanted. Good to see this will get the tenderloving care this game needs, you dont rush a good thing.

Yeah, I believe the longer developers have with the PS3, the more they will realize its true capabilities.
It takes more time to get a game to look as good on a PS3 as it does the 360. However, I do believe that it takes even more time and work to get it to look and play better than the 360.

Lets see MS claims at E3 that they will have the best 2007 but the biggest system seller game is missing. In case, you have not figured it out Halo 3 which will sells a boat load, doesn’t appeal to as many as GTAIV.
Now Sony will have more time with the game and it makes their 2008 line up looks much better with MGS4, FF, GTAIV, TEKKEN, etc.
Sony knows the importance of this game. The 360 versions most likely could and should have made it before 2008 since they admitted to having the quirks cleaned up before launch.
The PS3 version is no where in sight. Sony will never allow that game to go the 360 first. That probably would have been the nail in the PS3 coffin. They stopped it. Advantage Sony.
Two things everyone is missing:
1. The Wii is still slaying both consoles, making your arguments entirely moot
2. Banjo-Kazooie is already GOTY 2008 and 360 has it exclusively. Halo Wars, also a 360 game, is runner-up GOTY. Thus, 360 wins. Except against Wii because nothing can kill the juggernaut that is Wiifit.
