HDMI port: Don’t hold your breath rest-of-world

In light of the news that new Premium 360s will be carrying an HDMI port, we were all left wondering if/when the rest of us got to see such changes, as it was currently only known to be happening in the US. Well, Microsoft Australia have crushed hopes of it happening anytime soon in a statement to Kotaku.

We are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience. Retailers in the US are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand. This is not something that will affect ANZ [Australian & New Zealand] retailers or consumers for some time yet.

“We want it too! We want it too!”

Ah shucks, that probably goes for other PAL regions too, who haven’t even seen the Elite on store shelves yet. Does that mean we will have to wait four months after the launch of the Elite before we see the changes? Let’s hope not, but this is the rest of the world we are talking about here, so anything is possible.

Never mind, most probably won’t notice the difference anyway, it’s just nice to know its sitting at the back of the console isn’t it?

I don’t know if this is just for me, but there’s a big gap between the quoted paragraph and the picture. I’m assuming there are other pictures, or maybe it’s just a random gap. Maybe it’s just for me though…

That’s because you’re using IE 7 which renders stuff wrong. It’s fixed now, but please switch to Firefox in the future :P

I know I’m a noob, but what’s the difference? I thought Firefox was primarily for Macs, but I guess not…

Nah, FF works fine on windows, IE7 just takes all the good things that FF has done for years and recreates them badly.

Thanks for the info. Hm, where do I get Firefox? Is it really worth the hassle of changing from IE7 to Firefox?

I thought the first premium with HDMI found in the wild was in australia?

No, that was mis-reported/mis-interpreted (by Destructoid I believe; amateurs :P). It was in the US. Antlanta, Georgia to be precise.

Atlanta, Australia….. close enough :)

who honestly gives a dam about the HDMI model anyway… Wht exactly does it offer over component…

Let me tell you… NOTHING!

Technically, you’re way off. HDMI is a digital connection that carries sound as well.

It also offers 1080p movies for when HDCP becomes the standard for movies, which means Component is no good.

But if you mean visually what does it offer, then you might be right if you have a less than 40 inch screen. Above that and you’ll probably notice the difference a lot more.

Unless you have a very large full HDTV you will not notice the difference…

On my 32″ LCD there’s NO difference between Component and HDMI, on my 96″ screen 720p projector there IS an obvious difference.

Agreed, I have a Prem. Connected VGA to my 1080p 42″ and my elite looks no different. On my 102″ projector you can really tell the difference between componet and HDMI. HDMI compared to VGA… Not so much.

And as the average punter ain’t running a 96 inch projecter then no real issue for the mass market.

96 INCHES!!!!!!!! You lucky fucking swine.
