Well, the moment we’ve all been anticipating has arrived: the Bioshock demo has arrived on the Xbox Live Marketplace. After weeks of speculation and rumors, 2K Games has let gamers loose in the captivating world of Rapture, preparing them for the full excursion at its release next week. Along with the demo arrives the Bioshock launch trailer, which will likely be shown on various large-scale communication mediums, such as your favorite television station. Dash Text: Welcome to Rapture with the official demo to BioShock, the “genetically enhanced” first person shooter. BioShock is a shooter unlike any you’ve ever played, loaded with weapons and tactics never seen. You’ll have an arsenal at your disposal from simple revolvers to rocket launchers and flame throwers, but you’ll also be forced to genetically alter your DNA to create an even more deadly weapon – you. Injectable Plasmids give you ungodly powers: blast electrical currents into water to electrocute multiple enemies, freeze them solid and obliterate them with the swing of a wrench, or create a swarm of attack hornets from your own mutated flesh. BioShock is that rare game in which Brainpower is as valuable as Firepower. You’ll need plenty of both to get out alive.

Bioshock, a title already lauded by many as the “game of the year,” has received numerous acclaim from gaming press since it was first shown at E3 2006. Now, a demo of the heavily anticipated title has arrived- just in time for its release next week on August 21st (in the U.S.). Since the demo was just released minutes ago, no one knows much about its finer details. If you want to hear Major Nelson’s latest podcast with Bioshock’s lead developer, Ken Levine, be sure to check it out here: the demo supposedly covers about 1 hour of “tweaked” gameplay from the beginning of the game, with several weapons and genetic powers available for use. However, if you’re interested in the title (you should be), you should hop on Xbox Live right now and start its download (which will likely take several hours).
The launch trailer, which was first shown tonight on Spike TV’s show Kill Point, is now available for HD viewing via Gametrailers. The trailer shows off various aspects of the gameplay, but not using the real-time engine: it’s very reminiscent of the “Mad World” trailer that helped build hype for Gears of War.
Be sure to check back with Xboxic next week for our review of the title- Bioshock is a title that you definitely shouldn’t overlook.

I think this was the 1st time xblm managed to nearly max out my connection. Sadly, PSN store is always this fast for me.

On Major Nelsons show the guy says this is like a “directors cut” version, they made the demo after the game so they had a chance to polish it even a little more

Best graphics ever. This game is amazing. A must-buy if you’re remotely interested in any type of video game, and that’s just from what I can tell from a short demo.

Not when it was like that for an hour? Thought there could of been an additional problem. It was also on 0% for a lot of time. Not seen that before. First demo i’ve had problems with.
Nope - it’s just 1.3gb (which is huge for a demo) being downloaded by thousands of people at anyone time. It was the same with Forza. The bigger the download x the more people trying to access = the slower it will get.

Course its going to be slow, every highly anticipated game that has a demo end up downloading hardcore slow, cause everyone tries to download it at the same time. Fucks up the bandwidth…
I just finished … and all I can say is dammm…. my girlfriend looks like….70% hotter in low-light situations. I need to buy a bunch of 40 watts light bulbs… and a stripper pole. Oh, and this demo rocks my nuts around like a salty leech in breast milk.

I hate to moan about XBL but yeah I thought this is why we paid subscription fees. Its not although MS don’t know how people react when something big drops on the marketplace, having been in this situation many times. ¬_¬
Knowing is one thing - properly anticipating huge interest is a bitch. It’s not just a matter of adding a bunch of extra servers, it’s a matter of doubling, tripling or quadrupling an already extensive serverpark to properly handle ridiculous peaks like this.
They’ve got a shitload of capacity available all right, but no network I know of (including IGN, Slashdot and the like) can properly handle a million users all requesting the same 1.2GB file at once.
Contention rating, that’s all it’s down to.
They’ve been showing this game off constantly.
I wouldn’t be suprised that, they’ve shown off so much of the game, that there is barely any suprises left.
I’ve seen it on the Marketplace, and almost everytime I turn on G4 Tv. And almost every website is playing the game at the developers place at a constant rate.
Step over Gears of Wars you are no longer the best looking game around, and the game itselft is immense

Mmmmmm….That’s debatable. The water is by far greater than Gears’. Characters’ faces would go to Gears, but that’s probably more because of the art style that Bioshock has. Texture wise…….VERY hard to say. Don’t know if I can say it’s a clear winner over Gears, though.

I eventually did the sleep mode downloading. Woke up this morning and so far……WOW! Graphics are great. Intro is great. Scary atmosphere….still playing, so far its looks like a must buy.
I didnt especially liked it… I dont think its bad though! It made me think of Half-life in a way… maybe i should play the demo again and see what happens.

Wow simply wow. First the Eternal Sonata demo, then Stranglehold and now out of nowhere Bioshock. Then maybe a Skate demo and the COD4 Beta. I have both a PS3 and 360 and I’m just amazed at how much support the devs have thrown behind the marketplace. The PS *Bore* is lacking so much in content it’s not even funny. Come on Sony throw some muscle behind the PS Store. BTW I love my 360 and I despise how boring the PS3 has become. Not even Resistance holds my attention!
I just beat Resistance yesterday. Great game. Probably the best (non call of duty, i love ww2 games!) FPS i’ve played on a next gen console.

i never had a probelm, although i wouldnt no i was sleeping while it downloaded, but when i woke up a few hours later it was complete.
My download started last night at about 12. At 2:30 i couldn’t sleep, but the demo was only 60% done. I thought my xbox was frying so i turned it off completly. THis morning I begin the download again, and at first it says 1% and I’m like “WHAAT!” and then it completed in 5 seconds!!! Good demo to.
The demo was one of the most fantastic experiences I’ve ever had playing a game- I can’t wait for the final version. Seriously, it’s probably going to be the most polished and deep game of this generation- you’d be doing a real number to yourself if you pass it up.

Anywho…this game is amazing! I’ve played through the demo twice now and both times I noticed something different and absolutely incredible.
The launch day can’t come soon enough for me. Just that whole scene with the first Plasmid you take was shocking and made my mind go wild. Then the part with the baby carriage…OMG, that gave me chills.

I downloaded it overnight. It’s great…but…It’s scary. It’s too dark. Things sneak up on you. The Big Daddy’s are some big mothaf*s. I almost missed out on Gears, thinking it focused on horror, but it turned out to be great. However, I am now convinced that I cannot play this game. I’m not actually a coward in life or when I’m watching movies. There’s something about horrific video games that…horrifies me.

What’s up with your download it took me 1h10mins and my pc was downloading, ps3, laptop. Game is good. Played it on 100inches screen WWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW.
Yeah this only took me 3 hours to download, and i’m on Orange broadband which is supposed to be rubbish. Haven’t played it yet though.
Everything so far this year pales in comparison.
I wouldnt be surprised if this game turns out to be GOTY 2007.
