More info on Halo 3 co-op and difficulty; Epsilon exposed

It seems that Bungie just doesn’t know when to stop overwhelming us with tons of new details on their upcoming heavyweight Halo 3. Only a few days ago we unloaded a galore of information with regard to the single-player campaign, Forge, and microtransactions. Now, we‘ve received new details on the game’s co-op aspect and difficulty. Not only that, but also a great deal of leaked shots from the Epsilon build.

CNET.com.au recently caught up with Bungie’s Frank O’Connor for a Q&A session, discussing Halo 3 in great detail, including its difficulty system:

CNET.com.au: Tell us about the game’s difficulty. How will the gameplay experience change depending on what difficulty level you’re playing it at?

Frank O’Connor: You’ll actually encounter completely different scenarios sometimes. There are obviously different classes of bad guys, and their classes aren’t just an armour permutation or a colour palette swap — they behave very differently, they carry different materials, they use different weapons. When playing on Heroic, you’re going to encounter things that weren’t there before, like turrets, whole leagues of snipers, and different types of vehicles will come in. And again that changes in co-op too. So Heroic and Legendary on co-op will once again be different to what they are on solo. There are also other ways to make the game behave differently that the user will have a lot of control over.

CNET.com.au: But in terms of enemy AI, will they behave differently if you’re playing on Heroic or Legendary?

FO: Absolutely — they’ll throw grenades more often, they’ll deploy shields more often, they’ll take cover more often, and they’ll flank you more often. Their behaviour is massively different depending on difficulty level.

Frankie then explained that Heroic was the most suitable difficulty for the single-player campaign, as well as co-op. He also advises Halo 2 veterans to switch right to Heroic (or even better, Legendary) on their first play-through, since that difficulty level poses greater challenges and stands out as being “a lot more interesting” compared to the lesser normal difficulty.

Moving on, the next subject that the guys talked about was co-op, giving out details on how the storyline and co-op fit together, along with other co-op specifics that fans should take note of.

CNET.com.au: You’ve previously unveiled four-player co-op — one Master Chief, one Arbiter, and two Elites. Can you play a four-person game throughout the entire campaign mode?

FO: Yes, all the way through.

CNET.com.au: How does that fit into the game’s storyline then?

FO: If you’re solo, the Arbiter is with you for some of the missions. There are some plot dependencies that can take him out, but as you’ll see when you play through it, he doesn’t have to be gone from your side, which is why it still makes sense when he’s there during co-op. And the two other Elites — they’re not exactly throwaway characters. They have real back stories and bios, and so on. But they serve no functional purpose in the cinematics — they serve a purpose in the fiction, and they’re important allies of the Arbiter, but you don’t see them in cinematics. We wanted to make sure that when you were playing in co-op, the fiction seems correct, smooth, and seamless.

CNET.com.au: Was it tricky to fit in these extra players into the storyline?

FO: Not really. We had plenty of time to plan it so it wasn’t a big deal. We made that decision early on, and it was a difficult decision because people all want to be the Chief. But four Chiefs running around doesn’t make a lick of sense. And people had started to dig the Arbiter, so we thought about how we could work that in. We couldn’t give people marines to play because marines can’t run as fast as the Chief, they don’t take as much damage, they don’t have the shield mechanics, so it just would have been kind of a mess for the other three players unless we went in this direction.

CNET.com.au: Can you jump into co-op at any stage of the game?

FO: Yes and no. Any of the campaign rally checkpoints that you’ve opened up, you can start from. There are specific checkpoints so it’s nice and seamless when you go in. There are usually two or sometimes three in each level.

Lastly, 360WTF was fortunate enough to obtain loads of (low quality) screenshots from the Halo 3 Epsilon. The following showcase the newly announced flamethrower being used to set a tree on fire (without luck, unfortunately), the Forge mode in action, the third campaign mission titled “Tsavo Highway”, and more.

We’ll have more on Halo 3 very soon.

Well Its going to be good, but can we play as humans instead of aliens? I don’t want to be an elite in co op :(

That’s not ignorance, it’s preference (what’s ignorant is not knowing the definition of “ignorance”). And honestly, they could have made the marines work. They might not have had shields, but Bungie could have found some kind of benefit for those players that the Chief doesn’t have (easier movement?). Not being able to move as fast isn’t that big a deal.

no it’s ignorance because your asking a queston that’s already being awnsered:
“We couldn’t give people marines to play because marines can’t run as fast as the Chief, they don’t take as much damage, they don’t have the shield mechanics, so it just would have been kind of a mess for the other three players unless we went in this direction”

Except that it was a rhetorical question, not “Y CANT WE BE HUMANZ”.

If you want to play as humans… play Call of Duty and all of those other hundreds of FTP sucky shooters!! Get over it! Halo set the tone for shooters, their is nothing to complain about. It’s soo different, that is why we love it! Human’s suck and Master Chief RULES and aliens do too!! - How short is your imagination if all you want to play as is humans!?? Video games are all about doing the things we can’t do in real life! Can’t wait to see you online so i can snipe, stick, beat, pistol whip you!! oh and when you are down, you know what i will do to your FACE!

Ooh they revamped the warthog. I wonder how many varieties there are.

Despite it being low quality, the pictures still look pretty sweet.

Is the forth picture from Campaign?

No, it’s from Forge actually.

The interview’s been on GameSpot for a long time now (CNET owned) but the screens are new and cool looking.

It says “flamethrower being used to set a tree on fire” - I’m wondering if the tree actually catches on fire and burns away? (not the whole thing… but leaves, twigs and bushes etc.)

I really doubt that because the environment in the Beta wasn’t destructible at all.

Comment by Wet Vein on 2007-08-22 00:08:30 | Reply

Yeah, I didn’t think so either… it’s just the way they worded it made me optimistic. - It would be fun to melt a hole on snowblind and watch people fall in. lol. Or set a hogs tires on fire and boot around a map.

Only 34 days 2 go.

Well i guest im going to bend over and take halo3. fuking thing look good.

I don’t understand their comment, though, that they couldn’t use other humans for co-op as normal marines wouldn’t be able to take the same punishment as Master Chief, or indeed keep up. If that’s the case, why not introduce a couple of other Spartans instead - after all, Bungie admitted MC isn’t the only one when they put the female Spartan in DOA…

Comment by Arian on 2007-08-22 01:17:26 | Reply

But other master chiefs don’t fit into the story!

The arbiter and the two elites do, so the story works with or without them, 3 more master chiefs throws the story off.

Goddamn, pay attention.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2007-08-22 01:43:15 | Reply

Pretty sure that 2 MCs in Halo 1 and 2 didn’t make sense to the story…

Comment by Arian on 2007-08-22 03:00:27 | Reply

Back then, yes, before bungie invested in a full-blown consistent Halo Universe.

As far as I am concerned, H1 and H2 single player is the real story, Co-op was just an extra that played on the story but had no real effect on the singly player Halo Universe.

WITH Halo 3, they decided to take the Co-op further by making it optional as a second player playing the elite or not, but the arbiter is there alongside MC, unlike H1 and 2.

Comment by Number13 on 2007-08-22 10:39:15 | Reply

It was *after* they ‘invested in a full-blown consistent Halo universe’ that the female Spartan in DOA was introduced. Her backstory even said that there were loads of them.

Comment by Veritas on 2007-08-22 08:22:25 | Reply

Having two other Spartans could fit into the story if they made it fit. All Bungie needs to do is release two more of those damn novels and explain away, or give them “back stories and bios,” just like the elites.

Comment by MINGE on 2007-08-22 11:43:20 | Reply

I’m sure that there’s only one other Spartan on Earth but she retired to have a family or something. The rest are either MIA/KIA or in that slipspace thing at Onyx.

Comment by The_Glovner on 2007-08-22 12:21:27 | Reply

Eh? Its a fucking game for gods sake, chill people.

I’m not a halo fan, but didnt he say other spartans? I was lead to believe Master Chief is some sort of ’special’ spartan, meaning what Number13 said would be fine, because 3 other spartans isnt 3 other MC’s, its just 3 other spartans.

Comment by Lone goat on 2007-08-22 18:02:10 | Reply

i believe his number was 113 or 117 i can’t remember… but now theres 4-5 left from the first group of Spartans.. but all of them but john (the halo spartan) are stuck in a slipspace bubble at Onyx..

Comment by RapidRunn3r on 2007-08-22 02:32:48 | Reply

Honestly, what’s the big deal about playing as an elite? It looks EXACTLY the same as MC from a first-person standpoint, same campaign too. The only difference is that your friends will see you as an elite, but that’s it. They play the same!

Comment by Veritas on 2007-08-22 08:23:54 | Reply

Yeah, why bother customizing your character online, either? Hell, let’s even go to other games. Why bother with it in Oblivion, or Rainbow Six: Vegas?
