Halo 3 campaign video presentation; game already Gold?
Wow, that was quick. If you rewind your mind back to last week for a minute, we’re sure you’ll recall those leaked Halo 3 images from the Epsilon build. Though they did show off the Tsavo Highway level for the first time, the quality was so abysmal that we wouldn’t blame one to mistake it for an Xbox game. Thanks to Gamersyde, we now have a full-blown video presentation of the third Halo 3 mission. Also, Bungie’s favorite Frankie has been seen playing the final build online.
The 17-minute video presentation given by Brian Jarrard demonstrates the game’s all-new replay feature. Apart from the somewhat poor animations, the graphics seem to be up to par with other graphically impressive 360 titles. One thing that really strikes us about the visuals is the amount of detail that went into the Brute drop ship for example. Though it’s only a trivial enemy flight vehicle, its interior is fully modeled and sprinkled with some nice lighting effects as well. Check out the full video demo below.
While you wait for the long video to fully load, we thought you’d be interested in knowing that Halo 3 might have gone Gold already. You see, Frankie has been recently spotted playing not the Halo 3 Epsilon build but just “Halo 3”, as you can see for yourselves below. With the release date less than a month away, the timing for the game to reach the final stage appears to be just right. If it turns out true, expect it to go down in history, since Microsoft is destined to make a big deal out of it.

I won’t even watch the video, just watching the 7 seconds of it makes me feel dirty. Like I am betraying myself for watching this after waiting for so long instead of waiting a bit more and actually playing it myself. So no more Halo 3 rumors and such, we’re too close to the point where I think any more information would kill the hype for me.

Just a regular FPS? I think not - when halo came out it practically redesigned the FPS franchise & its halo thats made the genre so popular today. Also halo’s controls, ever so easy to use have been set as the standard for almost every other FPS to date!

None of this signifies that Halo 3 will be a quality game or not. So what if kris taylor thinks the game is shit, he’s entitled to his opinion. Just because 8 million other people supposedly don’t agree with him doesn’t make his opinion and less valid than theirs or yours.
The most popular games aren’t always the most innovated or original games made; popular doesn’t always mean quality.
I can’t wait for this game to come out and it will probably outsell everything that has been released on the current generation of consoles, but I doubt it will be the game of the year.

halo 3 did not redesign FPS. hundrds of thousands of people were playing FPS on their computers for years before this. Unreal. Counterstrike. etc.
Then Halo came out, and all the 13 yr old kids who didn’t have computers but their parents let them play Xbox finally had an online shooter. It did absolutely nothing to ‘reinvent’ the genre, other than be the first console online shooter.
At this point it’s overhyped, because all it is is another console shooter, where hundreds do and can compete at this point. But it will sell millions, as you’ve said, due to this overhype, and will therefore have a larger online community even though it really won’t be much better than many other available online shooters.
Warhawk is awesome. I know that after I beat Halo 3 campaign, I’ll probably be playing Warhawk online more. there’s no way Halo can top that gameplay.
I pretty much agree with all of this. Halo didn’t redesign the genre, games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and System Shock did. There really hasn’t been anything innovative in the FPS genre since 2000-2001, when Clive Barker’s Undying introduced magical spells along side offensive weapons in a FPS. Everything else has been a recycling of old ideas over and over, except with better graphics and different story lines. Not even Bioshock is as innovative as it’s made up to be (which to me is more of an Undying 2 than a FPS 2.0 they say it is).

Halo didn’t exactly redesign the genre but it did revive many peoples interest in it. (Including mine). And yes - it is the basic for most FPS for the past few years! Resistance sold 2 million. But halo 3 pre-orders are increasing every day. The last figure I recall being released was that it was nearing 1.2 million. And by the way that figure refers to the U.S alone. Thats not including Europe or the rest of the world. (The local UK store GAME has actually been told to stop taking pre-orders because M$ are afraid they wont have enough copies in stock to meet demand!) And yes it will sell like crazy! Though the franchise has already sold more copies than any other game in the FPS genre!

Ok maybe halo didn’t completely ‘redesign’ FPS but it did have a big impact on them. The controls were innovative & easy to use, & it presented an engaging story that was well received by many people. Whereas up to that point (for me anyways) numerous FPS were all about run & gun game play. A la DOOM. It was a fantastic game but there was little or no story. (only a short summary at the end of each chapter). Like ‘meh’ halo did revive my interest in FPS’s. Both in its campaign & its multiplayer!
And I think to simply call a game shit is pointless because if you dislike a game then why were you searching for it online & why are you on this site? I think final fantasy games are shit but I’m not going to search the web for FF website so I can say they’re shit.
I admit halo has hype (albeit too much). But I enjoyed both halo 1 & 2 & look forward to halo 3.

-The rechargeable shield (which in turn created the awesome balance between plasma and human weapons)
-Incredible vehicle functionality
-Powerups (Creating awesome balance)

-Recharging shields was technically done first by Mega Man Legends
-Vehicles were first done back in ‘98 in Tribes
-Powerups have been in almost every FPS since Doom
-Dual Wielding was introduced in Goldeneye
-Saved films again almost every FPS has had this
-Forge, big deal, you get to add objects to already existing maps, I want to make my own maps. Give me a damn real map maker/editor
So nothing really new here, but Halo did improve greatly on all these things. Even the Halo world setting and storyline kind of recycle of the ideas of previous games (Starcraft). This is why Halo is evolutionary and not revolutionary.

I appreciate your candor, and the Tribes refernce is one that about 5 other people on these forums can jiive with. However, I think seperation needs to be made between PC and console gaming. Halo is the definitition of a console FPS, as this is evidenced by the sheer number of people with 360’s still playing Halo 2 religiously.

I agree, their needs to be seperation between console and PC. I started as PC gamer, so my roots are in the great FPS’s, but Halo and the ever increasing costs of keeping up with the current technology of the PC keeps me from switching back. Would I ever love too though.

I was saying by his misspelling that he was young and yes haze was only going to come to the PS3 at first…and I just want people to stop posting about how much Halo 3 is gonna suck, it has a small chance of living up to the hype but its just annyoing to hear people bash one of the best multiplayer FPS in the world, other games are good Shadowrun, Bioshock is amazing. Thats all I was saying. GOW was all right the single player was like Halo it was nothing compared to the multiplayer.
I agree I think Halo 3 will be a fantastic game. I just think that everyone is missing the point of the argument.
The Halo franchise, while not so much innovative or revolutionary, defiantly improved on so many things that made the game enjoyable. The quality of a game isn’t solely judged on innovation, if that were the case there would be maybe a handful of games that were dubbed “good”. Instead, what Halo lacks in innovation, they more than make up for in shear enjoyment and replay value. The fun factor of the game is so high that it keeps people coming back and playing more and more. That is what makes Halo so great.
I’ve played better games before, but I’ve never played through a single player campaign as many times as I have Halo: CE. The game is so addicting, and that’s what makes it great. As said before, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Halo may not have been the one to create the features, but it was the game that actually made an impact with them. Columbus may not have been the first to reach America but it can be consider as if he did becuase the other didn´t have an impact, they are hardly remembered. I think this applies for Halo

I’m fairly certain that an Angry Hobo’s point was that Halo is the first console based game to allow saved films features.
While I grant that Quake gave you the option to save (and Descent as noted below), never before could you do this on a console, and whats more, never before could you move the camera to where you wanted, view the same events from ANY p.o.v. on the battle field. Never could you share the films with your frineds so easily. This is all very new stuff to the console scene. These guys aren’t dubm. They know that there are millions who are clamouring for H3 and I’m sure that all the stops were pulled out for it.
