Fall Update to bring ‘Parental Timer’?

As the season “Fall” approaches, so too does the expected update for the 360. Before it hits though, the update and its contents are rumoured about right up until an official word is said. We’ve already had one list come out, now we have direct talk of a new feature: a Parental Timer.

Ironically the list we published last month has no mention of the timer, leading us to believe that that could well be fake, since Kotaku have it on good word that the Parental Timer is definitely going to be an option.

What does this mean? Well Kotaku say it best with:

Sources tell me that the update will allow people to set a password protected usage timer on their Xbox 360s. In other words, parents or loved ones will be able to limit the amount of time someone can game on the system during a given time period.

MS really should just include an egg timer with the 360 package

It will be interesting to see how this works should the feature be included. Will it turn off the 360, or simply quit the game? And what about save progress? Will it give the option to save and quit or just make you lose all your progress? For instance, it’d be a bit tricky getting to a save point in an RPG, since you would have battles and all sorts to get through before reaching one.

This is a rumour of course, but Kotaku are pretty confident about their source, so it’s probable that this is true.

Will anyone use this if it does happen?

Thanks to Colby for submitting.

If I had this as a kid, I wouldn’t have got a look in, they would be on it more than me.

I wouldn’t use this new feature at all. With all of these updates, can I just get an update to allow the 360 to adjust the default screen position? I’ve only seen one game on the 360 that gives you this option, Ms Packman. How difficult would it be to add this into one of these seasonal updates?

how crap is that ! First off in the whole time I’ve had the 360 I think i’ve oly come across a small handful of kids, the 360 to me seems more 20 - 30 yr olds. Also im guessing just like the system clock resets itself on unplugging the console. All a kid has to do it just unplug the console and plug back in to reset anything.

Yup.

Man, you are one lucky guy. You should meet some of the kids I get unfortunate enough to meet myself over Xbox Live. Sad times, usually hilarious though at how they all try to be a gangster

I think having a timer is a great idea… Gaming makes time disappear

Comment by H1tchman on 2007-09-05 15:56:17 | Reply

If i had kids i’d let them play for as long as they want. If i want them off the machine, they get off of the bloody thing if they know whats good for them. Doesn’t say much for your parenting if you need a timer to sort them out. Anyway they wouldn’t get a look in with me around, :p

Maybe kids who read bout this should not tell to their parents?

Atleast my parents were not into gaming when i was young, so maybe parents or “loved ones” will never know about this timer?

Its a good thing, if you want it you use it and if you dont want it dont enable it.

Kids play too much computer games anyway and dont give parents like me enough time to play.

most parents who dont game wont even notice

glad im not a child while this was around….actually imagine how nice it would be to have a 360 at 8 years old? Meh ill still take my N64 with no timers and no online any day.

Just give us group chat and stop wasting time with this bullshit.

I think that’s good. It’ll be a way for me to limit myself in my gaming. I have exams coming up, so as well as disconnecting myself from Live, this could help a lot in forcing me to revise :). Stop complaining…

Doesn’t the Nintendo Wii already have this, maybe xbox is trying to compete..lol

Any news on something useful for the majority? Or will it be yet another update full of crap I’ll never need or use?

Once again, thanks for nothing.

I doubt most parents care. Sad, but true. Good thing Metroid’s not on the 360, or there would be casualties.

But I like the guy who said “don’t tell your parents”. I doubt most parents who would use this even know it gets updated biannually.
