Halo 3 rakes in the cash

Halo 3 has already become the biggest entertainment launch in history. Microsoft announced today that the game has brought in more than $300 million in sales in its first week. Halo 3 also helped last week’s 360 console sales to double over the weekly average.

From the press release

Microsoft Corp. today announced that “Halo 3″ has officially become a global phenomenon, garnering more than $300 million in sales in the first week alone. The critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive, which was released in Europe on Wednesday 26th September, is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of “Halo 3.” With games like “Halo 3,” “BioShock,” “Mass Effect” and “Project Gotham Racing 4,” Xbox 360 has the greatest line-up in the history of video games and the only console where consumers can play all of the year’s biggest blockbusters…

…”Halo 3″ is quickly staking its place as the most popular Xbox LIVE® game in history with members gathering in record numbers to play on the world’s largest online gaming and entertainment network on TV. More than 2.7 million gamers have played “Halo 3″ on Xbox LIVE in the first week, representing nearly one-third of the 7 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide. Within the first day of its launch, “Halo 3″ players worldwide racked up more than 3.6 million hours of online gameplay, which increased more than elevenfold to 40 million hours by the end of the first week, representing more than 4,500 years of continuous gameplay. Since “Halo 3 launched,” gamers have unlocked nearly 30 million achievements. In its first week alone, “Halo 3″ drove a record number of Xbox LIVE Gold Memberships as hundreds of thousands of new members gathered online with friends, family members and other gamers around the world to collectively compete and complete the game.

Just as impressive as the sales figures, the Xbox Live stats show what most of us have been doing for the past week. 2.7 million gamers have played Halo 3 on Xbox Live, for a combined 40 million hours of gameplay in the game’s first week. That’s an average of 15 hours per gamer. The console sales boost is the biggest point in the release, and it will be interesting to see if the game can continue to drive console sales into the holiday season. The market has spoken, and Halo 3 is king.

in YOUR view

Comment by Nekro on 2007-10-04 21:36:38 | Reply

It may well be my view, but it’s a view from someone who plays games of all types and genres. I have no bias towards anything and wait for a game to prove itself before I say it’s amazing. I played Halo and Halo 2 and thought they were average (I don’t see how the first Halo changed anything in FPS). The thing with Halo as far as I can see is that the snowball is getting bigger and bigger gaining more and more pace as it ploughs through everything in it’s path.

I’m sure if the hype machine hadn’t been kicked up the whole Franchise would’ve died quite sometime ago, but no, it gets bigger for every subsequent release. People may well enjoy the experience, but I don’t get the allure, what is the pulling factor?

Comment by Nekro on 2007-10-04 21:38:24 | Reply

There is one thing that I have seen Halo do better than anything though. That being the matchmaking system.

This game rocks. I’m sorry you can’t see that, but you’ve made your point, please move on. Trade it in, stop reading about it, and go play something else.

I would stop reading about it, but the game has this horrible habit of appearing 200 times a day everywhere.

great games with a huge following tend to do that. It really can’t be helped.

i want my $59.99 back. This game is trash online, has no suport for coop over live unless you and your core group of friends are all halo fanatics and have similar work schedules, and the single player campaign completely fails to take into account the fact that more people owned a PS2 that people who owned a XBOX, and never knew the storyline of halo 1+2.

Comment by McGrude on 2007-10-04 20:16:14 | Reply

Troll.

But on that note, buy the freaking games (Halo1 and Halo2). They both run on the 360.

Regarding “no suport for coop over live unless you and your core group of friends are all halo fanatics and have similar work schedules” — Find more friends. Um Duh?

There are plenty of people to play with and many online communities. So it is Bungie’s fault that you’ve not joined an online community such as 2old2play.com, or many, many others?

Comment by AugustusBot on 2007-10-04 20:22:01 | Reply

no, it’s bungie’s fault for not including a matchmaking system for Co-op and forge.

Comment by mass9 on 2007-10-04 21:14:22 | Reply

Augustus, get over yourself.

Bungie doesn’t care that a few fringe players are bothered by this. Bungie realized that they have a proven formula, that has already connected more console gamers than anything prior or since. In the 5+ years since Halo:CE was released, the fans of the series have been able to find each other all by themselves. I’ve found groups that I’ve played with since H2 launch, and many of the same I now play with in H3.

It’s not Bungie’s fault that you’re a cry baby. Stop the bitching, trade in your disc and play soemthing else.

OR….find some people that can tolerate your childish attitude and play with them.

Comment by mass9 on 2007-10-04 21:18:01 | Reply

and just one more thing….

you’re right, there were tons more people who owned a PS2 and not either of the other Halo games.

Unfortunately, Halo 3 was made with the intent to satisfy the demands of the 5 million who bought Halo:ce and the 6.5 million who bought H2. It’s your fault if you’re not up to speed with the single player story, no one elses. Stop crying that no one is holding your hand and telling you what you can find out for yourself if you’d played the games.

I haven’t had any problems finding any. I’ve only played a dozen or so myself, but as I mentioned in my post, if not on the friends list, try the recent players list. It has worked for me thus far.

I tend to agree with AugustusBot on the co-op bit… why wasn’t it like Gears for god sake where you could search for co-op games.

Comment by mass9 on 2007-10-04 21:09:50 | Reply

thank god its not like gears co-op.
Shitty little 4 v 4 battles, no respawns, screaming little children, and cramped maps only suitable for the 3 game types offered.

Gears co-op got old after a few weeks. H3 has more than enough built in options to extend play that a ‘no custom game’ search shouldn’t detract from the longevity of the games life span.

Besides, once you get some friends on your list, you’ll never have too much of a problem finding a game. My list isn’t even half full (40-or so people on it) and I’ve yet to see a day where I can’t find 1 custom game to join. If not a friend’s game, try the recent players. Worked for me!

Comment by digitpete on 2007-10-05 17:30:59 | Reply

Do you not know what co-op is? Co-op is playing the campaign through with someone else, different from the multi-player kill each other mode. I have a full friends list too but I work a weird schedule so often no one is on who wants to play through the campaign with me, and most people on my recent players list just want to play multi-player. Had fun playing Gears co-op with strangers many times.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2007-10-05 20:28:57 | Reply

Not knowing what co-op is…priceless.

Yeah, I agree. It’s very weak/lame that custom game searches weren’t included at launch. HOWEVER, if you want to find people to play custom games, spend a day playing big team battle and adding people to your friends list. It only takes me about five minutes to get a good game of rocket race now.

Comment by Sean on 2007-10-04 21:39:18 | Reply

Uhhh - so… the complaint is - you buy the 3rd game in a trilogy, and complain that you don’t know the story? Okay… I’m going to go watch the 3rd part of Lord Of The Rings and complain that the character development wasn’t good enough and it didn’t explain the happenings of the previous 3-hour movies.

If you want to know the story, read the instruction manual. It goes over exactly what has happened in the previous two games, and where Halo 3 starts.

Campaign Co-Op… you complain because you can’t matchmake? I’m GLAD you can’t. I hated doing co-op Gears with people I didn’t know, who turned out to be absolutely useless and gave you no cover. If you want to meet people for co-op, go into matchmaking, find someone suitable, and party up. End of.

Comment by cirej2000 on 2007-10-04 22:26:31 | Reply

I don’t get all of the complaints. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a great game. I never got into the first game, haven’t played Halo2 and haven’t bought Halo3 since, even though I enjoyed the hell out of the Beta…I’m not a person who normally gets into a game when the primary factor is online multiplayer (not for $60 bucks!). Same reason why I didn’t get Warhawk for my PS3.

You can’t deny the fact that Halo has a true following, keeps people playing for years after the games launch and offers a crapload of features. And sometimes, it’s pretty cool to have some continuity in a storyline…which Halo3 provides.

I’m a Nintendo-Fanboy, but I won’t deny that the Wii right now has nothing close to the Xbox-live (not even PSN!) for online gaming. Maybe that’ll change. But for the most part, I’m going to be more into games like MP3 and Bioshock that offer a deeper SP experience.

But to dismiss Halo as a franchise because you don’t like the game or hate the 360 is foolish.

-this game rocks.
so what if augustusbot doesn’t like it. There are 2 types of gamers in this world; those that like halo and those that play final fantasy(these people also suck dick for dollars).

Comment by augustusbot on 2007-10-05 08:43:43 | Reply

lol.
you’re half right.
there are two types of gamers. the crowd that like Halo are the crowd that make movies like Spiderman 3 be the #1 box office hits in comparison to actual ‘good’ movies that were directed well and have a well written plot. The crowd that like Halo are the crowd that make artists like Britney Spears sell more albums than artists like The Flaming Lips. Halo is popular. But that doesn’t make it great.

Just before halo 3 came out i brought 1 & 2 as i hadn’t played through 2 at all, and i think they are all very good. Halo 3 is nothing ground breaking play wise, but more, all the things we’ve seen before, but done waaayyyyyy better.

I think it’s great and i really think it’s about time that AugustusBot should just shut the f*ck up and go somewhere else to ramble on about how bad the xbox is, Augustbot, if it’s so shit, then why the hell are you still playing on one? Dumbass doesn’t even cover it.
