Bungie still ‘close’ with MS; Halo MMO in the works?

Robbie Bach sat down with GameGuru.in while in India announcing the launch of Xbox Live in that country. Bach discusses the relationship with Bungie now that the studio has split from Microsoft. Details of the interview and a juicy Halo rumor behind the jump.

Bach was asked about how Microsoft Game Studios has been affected by the departure of Bungie and by other studios, like Bioware, Bizarre, and Pandemic, partnering with other publishers and this was his response

Let’s make sure we are very clear on the record. Bungie Studios still has a very close relationship with Microsoft. They will continue to do work with us and will continue to build products for us and we’ll have access to their content. We’ve changed the nature economic relationship with them, but they are absolutely going be working with us and we value that relation.

The other thing I’ll say is in the content space, you are constantly moving in and out with different producers, different content companies. What we have here is some companies who have decided to go in different directions or been bought by somebody else. We’ve also established new relations with people and you’ll see those new relations come forward over time. I’m actually very confident about Microsoft’s lineup next year! People forget that we have several great studios internally who are doing incredible work and will continue to do so, and I think we’ll be just fine with the titles that we have in the next 12-24 months.

Microsoft will be utilizing that close relationship if the newest Halo rumor is true. GamingTarget is reporting that the rumor mill section of December’s EGM includes a rumor that a Halo MMO-FPS is in the works for the 360. The question now is whether or not Peter Jackson’s Halo project is somehow related to this rumor. Bach had this to say on Jackson’s foray into the Halo universe.

Well yeah, Peter Jackson is Peter Jackson and I think he’s going to produce great stuff and I’m excited about it. He’ll bring his creativity to the table with the Bungie team. I think there will be some real fancy stuff.

While it’s possible that the Halo MMO and Peter Jackson’s project are related, don’t bet on it. Jackson will probably be favoring a much more cinematic experience, and Microsoft has been referring to the project as “interactive entertainment” rather than a video game. Seeing how Bungie is slightly less secretive than the CIA, don’t expect to see confirmation or denial of the rumor any time soon.

what makes you think it will be exclusive for the PC?

Comment by Sean on 2007-10-25 19:01:17 | Reply

Yeah, it’d probably be the other way around - at least for a short period of time. It always has been, and Microsoft will make sure it always will be. Shifting 360’s is their priority.

A Halo MMo would never be on a console, it would be a GFW title….MMo’s don’t work on consoles

FFXI? PSU? The New Marvel one for 360? Huxley? APB?

MMO’s can work on 360s (and PS3s for that matter) but many developers simply aren’t bothering to port their games…. Or for some Other reason…. I dunno

yup, i’m still playing FFXI on my 360 and pc and i played PSU while it was free. PSU just didn’t seem as fun as FFXI online but i still bought the game to play through the single player storyline.

It will definitely be on 360. The rumor itself says MMOFPS for 360. I’m sure 300 million halo players will be happy to buy new gaming rigs and move from the couch to the desk to play halo….har har

cause they have no need to, and besides not many people bother with them on consoles but this one i can see being different

in fact i will post, but only after fuckers using my tag and only then to point it is some other prick.

I doubt a Halo MMO would have many RPG aspects. I think it’d probably be more like an FPS with large scale battles that have effects on an online world. Think something similar to Chromehounds except without the robots.

it would be fun but i think master chiefs adventures are over

Comment by Anthony on 2007-10-25 23:22:24 | Reply

Master Chief’s adventures are far from over. Just because the main trilogy has ended doesn’t mean Microsoft/Bungie/Peter Jackson (whoever takes control of the series) won’t create a new story for Halo fans.

I think a new series of Halo adventures are coming. It could be an MMO, it could be something more. And what’s the deal with Peter Jackson’s Halo game? Any news on it?

i take it youve seen the legendary ending? it hints at quite a bit despite its length.

MMO would be hard to do on the 360 unless they forget about all games working on a machine without a hard drive. Make the chat pad mandatory for the game as well and you have enough buttons to make it.

Comment by Yoshima 31ite on 2007-10-26 20:04:43 | Reply

you can use a USB keyboard, that’s what i use on FFXI on the 360. You don’t need that stupid ass chat pad thing

as long as you can play as a grunt, hunter, etc… then you got something on your hands…
