No Mass Effect Collector’s Edition for CAN, AUS & LA

Just when Mass Effect seemed to be riding the crest of a wave, what with the game going Gold recently and the never-ending stream of praise from all sides, the unexpected happened. Fear not, the game is still on track for its November 20 release. Rather, it’s to do with the availability of the Collector’s Limited Edition across the world. Head inside for some disappointing news.

Bioware’s Community Coordinator, Chris Prietsly, was sorry to denote the following on the official Mass Effect forums:

I have recieved an update from our publisher about what regions the LCE or bonus disc will be available. I know it isn’t what many of you wanted to hear, but I did say we’d let you know when we knew.

USA

  • LCE available through select online retailers
  • LCE not available in stores
  • Bonus disc available online or in stores (selected merchants, check your local stores) for preorders

Europe

  • LCE available in store (check with local retailers)
  • Bonus disc not available

Canada, Australia, Latin America

  • LCE not available through online retailers
  • LCE not available in stores
  • Bonus Disc not available

BioWare is still seeing if there is anything that can be done with this situation. If there are any more updates, I will make them known.

It turns out Canada, Australia, and Latin America will suffer the most, since neither the Collector’s Limited Edition nor the bonus disc will be made available there. As is usually the case, the United States will walk away with only a few scratches, so to speak.

Let us know how you feel about this below.

So what’s on the bonus disc anyway? What are we Europeans missing there?

Comment by James on 2007-11-02 13:25:48 | Reply

the bonus disc has all the free gamerpics and themes on it and other such stuff that i wanted.

What the fuck? Why? Surely they would want to cash in on this as much as possible. Someone’s blatently made a big mistake somewhere.

Odd, the game is made by a Canadian company & we don’t get the collectors edition. Ohh well, my video gaming budget for the month is going towards Assassins Creed

I think I remember reading somewhere that the “bonus disc” is a pre-order thing, that gets you 14 exclusive gamer-pics and a theme or something. But the Collector’s Edition gets you 21 gamer pics and 2 themes, or something like that, so we won’t be missing out on much in Europe. I think the pre-order bonus disc was done to try and keep awareness up in the States what with the crowded release schedule, and as a way to encourage people to buy any version of the game from certain stores (GameStop seems to ring a bell here…).

Whatever the case may be though, it sucks for die-hard fans outside the US that may have wanted the bonus disc, and Canadians, Aussies and Latin Americans are getting royally screwed!

seriously guys, why does it matter about some dumb gamerpics. its always this bull- get a special model thats limited edition ,so only 15 million people have it- then spend extra money on an extra disc with bullshit on it, a doc about fucking voice acting or somethin. BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT. get the regular game and look down with pity on the people who are collecting rubbish to stick in a car-boot sale in a few years.

meh.

I just wanted a gamerpic that said “MASS”.
oh well. But really, its not like this should/will stop people from buying the game.

I have this game preordered, but I’m about 95% sure when I pick up Call of Duty 4 I’ll be transferring my 5$ from Mass Effect to pay for COD4.

I won’t beat mass effect even if i buy it, so why waste my time. If I get bored I’ll just pay 10$ and read a sci fi novel instead, I’m sure it’ll be more enjoyable.

Umm … I’m not sucking anoyone, thanks!

That is kind of funny since Bioware is based in Canada. Oh well I will still get the game anyways

I heard the reason that there is no Limited Edition in Canada is because the bilingual problem, where all documentation must be in bilingual. While this does sound plausible, I am skeptical about this as Australia does not have similar requirements (or do they???).

If this is true, I cannot say that I blame the publishers for skipping Canada for such special editions. I remember that Oblivion special edition included a nice book that told some lore of the land, and in Canada, with got two books, one in English and one in French. I can only image how much this extra book cost the publishers. I think we will be short-changed on any special/limited/collector’s editions that contain anything other than physical bonuses (ie. statues, metal cases, pics etc…)

Never thought of it that way, but its true. Any/every game I buy has two manuals. One english, one french. Its impossible that this doesn’t eat into the net revenue.

or I could be a tree hugger and cite how many trees are wasted by this practice annually.

Either way, shame that we dont’ get the LCE option. But if you REALLY want it, there’s always eBay, right?

My Halo CE didn’t come with a french manual or anything. But since the Canadian dollar is higher than US dollar right now, it would be cheaper to buy it from a US online retailer anyways.

1.066 as of the opening bell this morning.
An all time high.

BUT….

Visa/MasterCard or any other credit card (required for online payments) have their own exchange rate. There’s a spread they’ll maintain, and make $ off each transaction. With a 1.06 dollar, it woudl still be about the same price.

Trust me, I’ve tried to work it out so many ways. This topic is actually DOMINATING the news in Canada, only in regards to car prices.

Actually for Halo 3, MS released seperate English and French versions.

Do you guys seriously spend extra oney on collector’s edition? Who cares? I can barely justify $60 on this game (Not an RPG fan). I hope this is done well and can avoid the pitfalls of games like KOTOR (excessive walking, many BORING sequences).

Comment by James on 2007-11-02 20:42:01 | Reply

u sir are a fool, that game was awesome

Comment by enXian on 2007-11-02 20:56:05 | Reply

i like Kotor games and RPG like Neverwinter

Maybe the manuals could be distributed digitally. A .pdf could work well and could be printed if one desired.

Although I did want a Big Daddy figurine, I never pick up the special editions; just give me the game. If I really need a special gamer pic or theme, make them availanble for download.

What a bunch of fucking shit. I WANT to pay 10 extra dollars and some dumb shits in PR or wherever this decision was made are losing it. Fuck you Bioware/EA/MGS or to whoever it applies to.
