Some Fall Update details leaked

Oh the surprise. As usual, by one means or another, it always happens. Microsoft Japan are at fault this time, as they have blown the lid on some (not all) of the new features heading our way on the 4th December. And you thought it was just going to be crappy Facebook features?

Here’s a quick list of some new things, the last of which will delight almost everyone:

  • Top level of “Marketplace” has been reorganized and reduced to four categories: “Featured Content,” “What’s New,” “Game Store,” and “Video Store” (below top level, categories will be navigated by twist, just like the Game Library)
  • “Personal Profile” added to Gamer Profile; text field allowing approx. 500-1000 characters, providing space to publish name, nationality, region, and self introduction. (Further social networking tools to accompany ‘Friends of Friends’ functionality)
  • XBLA demos deleted from “Played Games” and Gamercard lists

All the original sources are Japanese so it’s not easy to make out what is going on, however there are some great shots of the new (Japanese) layout as well as evidence of the Xbox Originals pages.

There’s a new, twisting layout on the way to make browsing the Dashboard just that tad bit easier. The “Game” blade is being re-worked, removing the “Xbox Live Arcade” part, and replacing it with a “Games Library” tab. Opening up said tab, you can peruse all your XBLA games, demos and your recently played games, all navigated via the “twist” motion, as witnessed on the Video Marketplace (something new for Europeans then). It’s a bar that runs along the top in a horizontal fashion with different categories for the content.

Note the twisty bit at the top

The Marketplace too sees a shift in design, again following the “twist” theme, with the categories “Recommended Content”, “What’s New”, “Game Store”, and “Video Store”. Does this mean the Video Marketplace goes live at the same time as the update for Europeans? No, not at all, so let’s forget about that for now.

The main delight for many is indeed the removal of the trials for XBLA games. 360 gamers have long been crying out for it, and there was no need for it in the first place, so this is certainly a nice treat. Do bear in mind that this isn’t all that will be appearing, we are expecting more, however it’s likely that the update’s changelog will only be revealed next week when the update goes Live. Hang in there, it’s not that long to wait.

Isn’t it sad that we are excited by this?

I say we…I’m happy about it as well….but let’s be honest…it should have never been a problem to start with, and now that it’s being fixed, they act like it’s something new and cool. Well, it isn’t. It’s just being fixed….and it’s about damn time!

More fluff. Yipee!

I don’t understand. What does that mean?

Haha, hell yeah. I hate seeing those stupid games that I tried once and realized they were total shit and then deleted show up in my played games list.

Believe it when you see it. Major always says “soon”…..then you find the information elsewhere. All he’s doing is trying to prevent massive numbers of complaints on his site. His word means nothing, IMO.

Major is full of major shit.

I don’t really care about “Demo’s being deleted”. But I can understand why some people would. I’m kinda old I guess, 30…. so competition with friends isn’t really an issue. But like I said…. If I was younger and actually knew the people on my friends list in real life it would be a welcome addition.
The rest of the stuff sounds cool. I don’t really know what “Twist” means… but if everyone likes it, I assume it’s good. Overall it sounds like it will be worth the wait.

FF you act like this is the only feature obviously they are giving us more(PLEASE DIVX) but the FOF feature is cool and I think a personal profile come on dude that is sweet and if you don’t want to give props to XBL team then go play on playstation online and see what the differences are.

Comment by FF on 2007-11-28 05:23:48 | Reply

The XBL team doesn’t need “props”…they get my money. If that doesn’t show enough support, then they can kiss my ass.

My point was, don’t fix something and act like it’s something new. It isn’t new, it’s just now being corrected. And the new Marketplace “twist” thing is just fluff. It’s a new way of performing the same task, and not anything to get excited about.

As far as I know, this update includes the parental timer, the FOF feature, and Xbox originals. I hope there is something else included, as none of these are of any use to me, but nothing else has been confirmed yet.

I could care less about new navigation designs. It’s likely just another way to add more advertising. Have you seen the Marketplace blade lately? It had brand logos across the top and bottom the last time I looked, yet we still get nickel and dimed for pics and themes.

Just because MS has the best online gaming service available right now, it doesn’t mean it’s perfect….and it doesn’t mean that I have to kiss their ass. They get my money….for now. That’s quite enough.

As long as I don’t RROD after the update, I am happy.

Comment by BlueHefner on 2007-11-28 06:34:01 | Reply

Hopefully the DIVX rumor is true. Would be the best update ever.

Comment by Henk on 2007-11-28 09:59:29 | Reply

There will be no DIVX, its ar rumor and will always be a rumor.

What is so special about divx? Why would you want to connect pc to your xbox to view movies on tv if you can just directly hook pc to tv? My tv is 3-in-1: pc monitor, xbox monitor, and tv, and it’s without switching any cables.

Comment by whatev on 2007-11-28 08:34:50 | Reply

It’s probably really small then …

Not everybody has his pc in the living room next to his (hd)TV. I really would like to see the divx/xvid feature, so stream HD content directly to my 360.

“Why would you want to connect pc to your xbox to view movies on tv if you can just directly hook pc to tv?”

well, because they are already connected for one thing. also, the highest quality audio and video connections would cost a fucking fortune to run from the pc to the home theater.

not having divx is bullshit.

Comment by bitchain on 2007-11-28 11:07:28 | Reply

time is getting closer and still nothing to care about :( what have they been doing all this time? hopefully i’ll be proven wrong and some decent new features will happen and real improvements to usability.

Comment by dstrike on 2007-11-28 15:56:10 | Reply

i am willing to bet that you will not be proven wrong and some decent new features will not be added.
It is clear the developers are thinking up these “fall updates” when they are sitting on the toilet dropping bombs

Comment by EUPHOR1C on 2007-11-28 15:48:55 | Reply

I agree, my PC is in the complete opposite corner of my house, upstairs for that matter. I’ve already been streaming full length movies to it at DVD quality. DIVX would make it all the more better. Woof!

How IGNORANT you are. Not everyone has an HDTV , and not every HDTV has a PC input. Then keep in mind that not all PCs are equal. Mine for example can’t run HD videos well at all, but my 360 can stream the same videos from that computer with barely a hitch. Finally, not all PCs have the proper drivers to fully take advantage of an HDTV. My PC can only do 4:3 when hooked up to my TV’s PC input, meanwhile, my 360, hooked up to the same PC input has the proper drivers to properly display in 16:9. I hope that answers your questions.

Sorry to flame you again on this one… but I have a 42″ HDTV in my bedroom that is being used as the second output for my PC. My 50″ HDTV in the family room is where the xbox is hooked up. Therefore if I want to watch movies on my computer out in the family room I’d have to move my computer, which is a pain in the ass (though I have started downloading movies onto my laptop). DIVX is a convenience. Just because you don’t need it why the fuck don’t you want the rest of us to have it?

Sod all this… all I want to know is…

IS THE VIDEO MARKETPLACE GOING TO BE LIVE IN EUROPE?

After all, it has been rumoured for this update for a long time (and also from what I have heard, the reason why the update was put back from the date last year (If that makes sense)
