Revealed: Spike VGA winners and losers

The high-profile Spike TV Video Game awards ceremony took place yesterday, a glittering star-studded event memorable, not just for its musical performances, raft of celebrity guests, and sexy trailer interludes, but rather that it saw the first notable ‘Game of the Year’ award bestowed upon 2K and Take-Two’s underwater epic BioShock.

More pointedly, the critically acclaimed shooter bagged three awards in total, which were Game of the Year, Best Original Score, and Best Xbox 360 Game; all well deserved considering that BioShock successfully reinvented the first-person shooter genre while introducing emotive choice-led narrative and layered character evolution more readily seen in the RPG arena. The fact that it’s drop dead gorgeous is also a huge plus too.

Other big name winners saw the likes of Activision’s Call of Duty 4 snaffle Best Shooter and Best Military Game, while Valve’s Half-Life 2: The Orange Box secured Best PC Game and Breakthrough Technology (for Portal). Also, Microsoft’s flagship title Halo 3 managed to take home two (second string?) honours, which were Best Multiplayer Game of the year and also the Dew-sponsored Most Addictive award.

While some may have been surprised to see Super Mario Galaxy fail to romp home with Game of the Year (especially given its meteoric review scores), the iconic Italian plumber’s latest adventure did land Best Wii Game and Best Action Game, while The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass took home Best Handheld Game. From Sony’s standpoint, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction took a firm grip on Best PS3 Game.

Also, in the hotly contested Rhythm category, Rock Band took the award, the groupies, and the private jet home, while Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s, Jam Sessions, and Guitar Hero III were left to board the tour bus with the sweaty roadies.

From a ‘who left disappointed’ perspective, while Bungie might have been hoping for more for Halo 3, Ubisoft secured nada for Assassin’s Creed, while BioWare only took Best RPG for Mass Effect, and not one single Sony or Nintendo title made it into the Spike VGA ‘Game of the Year’ shortlist.

I see only one mention of a non console game: Crysis.

Mass Effect should have won on soundtrack to put a music game in that category is ridiculous, the Mass Effect soundtrack was great really held out on its own and created that Cameron’esq feel to the game was great

Best Driving Game: Dirt? What???!
Forza 2(King of the Simulators) and PGR4(King of the arc-sims)
Whatte hel is Dirt? You are driving empty cans in the race :))))

i agree. i spent about a hundred hours playing forza, and like ten playing dirt. fakey MP makes dirt an easy second or third at best in my book.

i dont take spike tv’s vga seriously. Very unreputable source. Plagued by money and popularity

I’m more suprised anyone could sit through the entire Spike VGA. It’s so bad…

i dont think they had a good choice for any… they needed more titles becasue there were more than just 5 different games released. i watched family guy anyways and went to bed, i didnt even watch it. didnt really care.

Go check Colin Mcrae dirt, you moron the game is awsome

Dirt is good but its not anywhere close to Forza 2 good.

I don’t why why people get so bent out of shape when others don’t agree with them. I mean it is an opinion. Imagine trying to decide who the hottest woman is…. some like big tits, small tits hard tits soft tits, ski-lopers, hard boiled - poached or scrambled. Everyone is different.
As far as driving games are concerned…. hard core gear heads usually pick Forza, then there’s people who like cars, but not as much as weed or tits, well they usually pick Dirt or Gotham. Pure adrenalin guys might pick Burnout… Personally, I prefer Dirt. Sure it’s not a sim, but it’s fun. The tracks have jumps and the environments are fun to race around…. that’s important to allot of people. And just for the record, I like small-ish to mid sized firm tits…. sunny side up.

No offence but I think the results are quite “obvious”. SpikeTV has very tight contacts with Microsoft and some of Spike’s biggest shows are usually sponsored by Microsoft.

Can’t really be impressed with the above results.

Just wait till other places start releasing there game of the year awards fag. It will also be dominated by 360 games. Not because of your conspiracy theory about microsoft having close ties to the companies, but because all the best games came out on the 360 this year. Queer. the 360 had 8 games come out this year that averaged 90 or above on metacritic. (since you are a dumbass, metacritic cannot be biased because it is a site that averages all reviews for each game), the wii had 2 and the ps3 had 2.

I’m not surprised that Microsoft will take the bigger part of all prizes this year but I cannot take a prize seriously if the “voting-system” is owned & run by a Microsoft-sponsored company.

…Halo 3 getting the Dew award. Big surprise.

‘Game Fuel’, anyone?

Comment by x El Scorpio x on 2007-12-10 15:35:06 | Reply

Mass Effect should have got more awards IMO but Bioshock is also an incredible game

Comment by mass9 on 2007-12-10 16:05:35 | Reply

“…considering that BioShock successfully reinvented the first-person shooter genre ”

um….great game, but what the hell are you talking about? It was a fresh franchise, but new ideas alone don’t reinvent anything.

and the award for BREAKOUT TECH. should’ve definately gone to Halo 3.

oh, and Forza2 FTW in driving category.

Best Multi.
hands down, Halo is king.

nice to see CoD4 get the nod for best Military game. It is. Single player, its great. Can’t touch MC for multi though…..

agreed! saving movies and coop campaigns are both becoming my most sought after features.

Holy Cow was that show a waste. A series of “world premieres” mixed in with a collection of “stars” who 1st had to declare their love of video games and 2. Yell to show just how excited they were to be there.

Biggest loser from the 07 VGA’s me and everyone else that watched it.

I’m glad these awards shows don’t actually mean anything to the industry, if they did that would be scary.

Comment by EvolutionOX on 2007-12-10 21:53:14 | Reply

This is such bullshit Halo 3 should have raped the competition I mean give the game the respect it needs its all over no more Halo, why shouldn’t it go out with a bang? I also agree this so not serious and spike tv video game awards are unreputable sources!

Comment by lilnikka on 2007-12-10 23:14:45 | Reply

For one, Halo 3 was good.. But overhyped.

Two, there’s going to be another Halo.

Comment by Arian on 2007-12-10 23:38:31 | Reply

Not exactly Halo (unless you are talking about the RTS) but from the same universe, quite possibly but under a different name. The name Halo comes from that story ark.

Comment by Vol on 2007-12-11 07:47:49 | Reply

Bleh… it’s obvious Halo was game of the year. Check the scoreboard (SALES). Bungie shouldn’t drop their head.

Comment by lilnikka on 2007-12-11 13:17:59 | Reply

A game doesn’t deserve GOTY for selling well.

Comment by mass9 on 2007-12-11 15:41:10 | Reply

No, but it should factor in the decision.
Also, flawless 4 player campaign (no other game does this), insane multi (the backbone of Halo 3 IMO), innovative features such as saved films and screens, coupled with a level editor should give you a bit of a leg up.

2007 was a good year for games.
You could make a strong case for at least 4 titles, maybe 5. Each for different reasons.

We should hope for such tough choices every year. :D
