Microsoft lowers price on Wireless Racing Wheel

Racing enthusiasts eager to take the gameplay experience of their favourite racing games to a whole new level should look no further than the official Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel which has today seen a welcome reduction in price to $99.

Previously retailing for $129, the Wireless Racing Wheel can now be found at your nearby retail stores for 30 smackers less. It’s a generous move by Microsoft and certainly one that should bolster the sales of the hefty peripheral. The games currently compatible with the wheel include Forza Motorsport 2, Project Gotham Racing 3/4, Test Drive Unlimited, Need for Speed Carbon, Colin McRae’s DiRT, and NASCAR 08.

Anyone getting this now that the price has been reduced?

I’ve had one since before Forza2 was released. I love it, but the problem is the space required for it and the inconvenience of changing controllers.

For me to use it to its fullest I have to move my couch, get my AK Design Rocker Gaming Chair and mount my racing wheel to a small table I have. It’s a real pain in the arse, but when I bother to do so, it is well worth it.

If you haven’t used the racing wheel, and of course you like racing games, you owe it to yourself to try it out. The best game to try it with is Forza2.

absolutely same story for me. i have had this wheel since forza, and i love it, but i have to actually screw it into a heavy coffee table, and zip tie the pedals to the baseboard for it to be effective. of course i do it, but still.

one thing to note is that a lot of games put the boost/handbrake/important-action on the face buttons (xyab), which for me, are basically inaccessible when i am driving. the flaps are the ONLY buttons i can get to regularly, and i shift, so there are troubles. with the burnout demo for example, there is no way to apply the handbrake and boost to the flaps, even though i would rather have them than shift. i hardly ever can get to the handbrake when it is assigned to a, sometimes i can get it at b, but the face buttons seem to be REALLY far away from my fingers on the wheel.

Just ask your local shop if they have any price protection (most places do), and if not just return it and get the cheaper one. I got mine last year. I cannot return it

Amazing product. Paddle shifting… nuff said. And you gotta MOUNT this beast somethi’n hardcore cause the force feedback steering wheel will cause the entire unit to move around if it isn’t COMPLETELY secure. Everyone I know has followed this simple tactic — Observe YOUR prefered playing ergonomic, and then resort to any and everything to bolt down this unit from moving a millimeter. I know it looks like the bottom is curved to rest on your lap, but once force feedback steering activates it’ll be all over the place. Use C-clamps, bungie cords, duct tape, your arm rests… whatever to lock it down. Then get ready to feel the tiny feedback movements of the road underneath you that will guide you toward perfect steerage, and that perfect lap time.

Also don’t forget:

Mine hasn’t shown any signs corruption so until then I just unplug it while not in use.

one thing i forgot to mention, i am on my second wheel. the first one, i snapped the wheel off like the neck of a chicken, so i HIGHLY recommend springing the ten bucks for the replacement guarantee.

oh yeah, and neither of mine smoked.

so i decided to get a wheel for a buddy of mine for christmas, and these wheels are NOWHERE to be found. at least not in san francisco california, where you can get ANYTHING. the crew at ebgames says that since the “recall” (see above link), they have seen NO new units, and have been instructed not to sell the old ones.

why did they lower the price if they are not available?

anybody have any luck finding one of these?

This should have been the price from the jump.

I spent $99 on the Logitech Momo because I don’t like the paddle shifters and I wanted a wheel I could use with my large collection of PC racing games. The MS wheel does work on pc, but without the force feedback.

The high cost / low quality of the MS wheel combined w/ a lack of features I wanted meant the MS wheel wasn’t much of an option for me.

If it gets down to $49 I MIGHT pick one up. Until then, I don’t see it happening.
