Goldeneye XBLA was real, development canceled
You probably all heard the rumour floating around about Goldeneye being in development for the Xbox Live Arcade. We neglected to comment on it at the time since there was little to no substance for the rumour. Now though, 1UP, speaking with close sources at Rare, are reporting that the game was two months from completion, but was canceled because of money issues.
The problem apparently arose because Nintendo and Microsoft could not agree on finances. Should Nintendo be paid a one-off fee, or be paid per purchase of the game?
Unfortunately, the reason GoldenEye for XBLA died came down to money. Our source close to Rare said the conversion was a mere two months from completion, but Microsoft and Nintendo couldn’t agree on the financial side of things. The point of contention, as our source puts it: would Nintendo receive a one-time fee for the rights to the game, or a continuing cut of the XBLA revenues? The latter seems to make sense for everyone, but apparently it wasn’t that easy.
Apparently the game wasn’t intended as a remake. It would have featured fewer characters due to licencing issues, the same graphics, maps and weapons, but of course would have supported Xbox Live multiplayer. The game had been in development for several months.
All this will bring a tear to the eye for many who had hoped to see this title appear at some point. For now, it seems as if the development has been shelved until some sort of arrangement can be made. 1UP suggest you show Microsoft and Nintendo how much you want it. We agree with this sentiment, so get those emails off right away!
Absolutely gutting. Shame really, still there is some hope seeing it’s so close to completion. Maybe one day, it will come.

I definitely want to see more wares from Rare. Their standards are high - lets hope they continue to flourish and that GoldenEye and a truck load of other goodies are with us soon.

i actually hooked up my n64 the other day and played for a few minutes. it’s not nearly as fun as i remembered. also, i have it on my original xbox and playing the game with dual sticks is too different from the original c-button setup to be useful.

man i always played this game when i was a kid now it will b even more kick ass plus achievements too bad tho mayb they wont b pricks and release it anyways =-D lol
Microsoft and Nintendo need to work this out. I would pay good money for this game, as I know many other people would. Make it happen people!!!
In some ways i think Nintendo should get a small percentage of each game that is sold (like 5%), but I think they should get a one off payment (or no payment at all) considering Nintendo only published the game and not actually develop it

Wait, wait wait… Microsoft needs to pay Nintendo royalties to put GoldenEye on Xbox Arcade? Nintendo doesn’t even own the James Bond franchise! Just because they published GoldenEye doesn’t mean they own the rights to it.
Microsoft should be able to make the game regardless of whether Nintendo thinks it’s fair or not. Nintendo doesn’t own the rights to GoldenEye.
The James Bond franchise is owned by MGM (the movies) and Activision (the games).
