HD-DVD add-on officially drops in price
It’s no secret that things haven’t been going well for the HD-DVD camp. With Warner switching over to Blu Ray exclusively, many predict that the lifespan of Team Red is fast approaching an end. Perhaps Microsoft believe this too, as today they have officially dropped the price by $50.
The player originally sold for $179.99, but as of today has been set to $129.99 for the foreseeable future. The price drop affects the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It seems a little strange that no other regions (particularly PAL regions) have been neglected, but give it time.
As Major Nelson reminds us, couple this with five free HD-DVDs and you really do get a good deal. It just depends if you want to invest in something that is probably a dying breed. Let us know if you do.
Thanks to Danny Fernandez for submitting.

I would wait for the blu-ray add on … if I didn’t have a blu-ray player already.
MS should scrap HD and bring out Blu-Ray add on
I may buy one if they go under $100. Toshiba has a better offer though, $149 for their lower end player with HDMI, ethernet, 1080p upscaling for normal DVDs, and 7 free movies.
Wait a minute I thought Warner is still releasing on both formats? When did they become BD exclusive?
At the beginning of January.
I just read at the end of May 08 they’ll end HDDVD support
link?

Ohhhh, that. I read that long time ago lol. I didn’t read your post carefully enough and as a result understood that MS is ending their HD-DVD support in May lol
Oopsie
Yeah, blu-ray is so great. shit, can’t wait for sony’s next parallel technology to be released and fluster up the market. Makes my life as a consumer great. If only they could participate and agree on a single format like other major companies. Wait, they’re too greedy and would rather put the cost on consumers. Guess it only took 3 years to figure it out though. Blu-ray add on on a 360? seems sorta contradictory to me.
2 me? 2 me look like a leprechaun 2 me. Anybody else see the leprechaun say yeayyyyahhhhhhhh!!!!
What… the… fuck?!

If I’m not mistaken it was toshiba that didn’t want blu-ray and made HD-DVD as opposed to sony trying just to release a different format. I think the studios chose blu-ray and toshiba said no, we would prefer our format. And before you ask I don’t have a source, thats just the way I remember it going down.
Shut up, you ain’t real anyway.
blu ray sucks ass the picture is gay hd looks better
Not only developed by Sony, just one of the companies involved.
Yup terrible choice on MS’s part to have the facility to jump to the other format at anytime even though they got their console out with over a years head start on the competition.
Great idea by Sony to force a format on the public by delaying their Blu-Ray trojan horse for a year then releasing with fuck all games.
Yup, its fucking funny, but not for the same reasons you are laughing.
I am laughing cos you really can’t back up your console of choice with anything other than this lame bullshit, and at the end of the day Sony need as many “kick backs” as they can get judging by their year end profit.
Fucking fool.
MS have already stated they would have no problem with a Blu-Ray Add On if that’s the way the market went. Makes their decision to keep it out of the core build a good one.
Well, one thing that is funny is the way that the bile is starting to rise from all those that have spent the last 2 years saying how HD-DVD would win………
Well it didn’t.
And yes, it is over now.
Anyway, at this point in the hardware development, what is the point in shelling out for a BR external unit? You might as well just wait for a reasonably priced stand-alone player and get rid of the need to have your 360 fans wailing like a banshee in the background.
Anyone that stated HD-DVD or Blu-Ray would win (or even saying it now) is just a fucking fanboy spinning his mouth of anyway.
Both have pro’s and con’s and things ain’t over yet (fair enough it ain’t looking good for HD-DVD).
But don’t come on here and start going on about how everyone with an Xbox is crying about it. Bullshit.
Sony made a good move when they stopped trying to make a games machine and got people to buy a trojan horse Blu-Ray player, so that certainly helps them get a head start in the format war (which they needed considering they were so late in the new round of the console war).
Just try and get an ability to look at the bigger picture rather than spouting shit looking at areas in isolation. Makes for a far more credible argument.
I could really care less about SONY vs. MS. I just wish they would figure out which one will win so we as a consumer can pick one already.
I don’t even have an HDTV yet, so I honestly don’t care. =P
man your missin out.
Ahh, I’ve seen ‘em, and as great as they are… I can survive.
Although Survivorman in HD is damn sweet.
Don’t you guys know that Microsoft is enforcing the format war with millions of dollars to buy enough time to get their online hd-video platform ready? That’s what’s going and nothing else.
HD-DVD will lose, Blu-Ray will lose…
The winner is Microsoft and Apple (TV Take2) with their online movie rent services.
You sir are correct!
Glovner, you’re a little bitter aren’t you? I should have a little sit down and a cuppa and chill for a bit if I were you. Just to be clear, I own a 360, I don’t own (or am likely to anytime soon) a PS3. I don’t have any investment in the HD format war as frankly I’m not stupid enough to have been drawn into it prior to a resolution to a single format.
I am however not a blind bile filled moron who thinks that everything M$ do is right and everything Sony do is evil. ‘Everyone’ isn’t crying over their Xboxes just a small minority of continual moaners of which you are proving to be a very vocal part. So, regarding the bigger picture - just to make you aware, there is one and you’re not seeing it are you? I assume you’re still clinging onto hope for that old Betamax (Sony by the way) that you have in the living room?
Anyway, more profanities from you now please as they always help when you’re calling others a 10 year old……….
Fuck not using swearing and fuck having to explain it to you.
As I have said time and time again, swearing really ain’t held in that high a regard where I come from and is used flippently whilst reall meaning no insult whatsoever. Besides, if you bring your children up right they shouldn’t be using words like that at 10 years old.
As there are cultural differences on a multicultural site you may like to remember that. Look at the actual message not the words describing it.
As for crying over my Xbox, think you got that one very wrong, I just hate to stand by and see fanboy’s spout fucking nonsense on half baked facts and arguments.
In answer to your points about everything MS doing being right in my mind. Bullshit, I know they put the box out to early and as a consumer I feel thats a bit shit. But I can understand from a business point of view why it was done and has proved to be very successful on their part (OOOoooo look, the bigger picture, the whole thing doesn’t boil down to what I think about me personally, it’s all a lot bigger than you or me). At least they provided an extended warranty so I don’t feel as pissed as I did when my PS2 fucked up with a common manufacturing fault 3 days outside the 1 year guarantee and was expected to pay half the price of the original console to fix a common problem that Sony’s bad manufacturing was to blame for.
So I would still be holding on to my Betamax? Even though in your mind I hate Sony? Bit of a contridiction there then, being that that was another failed format from Sony, which ironically enough looks like they may be about to win the first format war they ever entered.
As for hating everything Sony, again, bullshit. I have a PSP, I have a PS2 (slimline now, so i don’t have the issue of the shit manufacturing done for the standard version). But other Sony electronics? wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole, not because of some crazy hate against Sony, but becasue when I make a purchase of electronics, I want to make sure I am buying the right thing, and any investigation will 9 times out of 10 show Sony’s products to be overpriced and to under perform compared to other choices available on the market. In other words I don’t go and blindly buy something with the word Sony because it has the word Sony on it.
Come on. You don’t actually have a key in your back do you?
I bet you do.
But now the mystery is: who’s turning it?!
