Discs of Tron flying onto XBLA next week

In what is now surely a trend, Disney Interactive Studios has beaten Microsoft to the punch by announcing that the classic arcade Discs of Tron is set for release on the Xbox Live Arcade next Wednesday.

Before you ask, no, Discs of Tron is not the same game as Tron which joined the XBLA family back in January. However, the one thing the two games do share in common is the fact that they both spawned from the 1982 Disney science fiction film, er, Tron.

In Discs of Tron, players find themselves in a three-dimensional arena where they are tasked with knocking the villain Sark off a platform by throwing discs. Expectedly, the further you progress, the more difficult the challenge becomes. It includes both classic and enhanced modes and features the following offline multiplayer modes: Classic Versus (highest score wins), Speed Versus (player to reach determined score first wins), Co-op (two players’ scores combined for leader board results) and Deadly Disc Versus (players play simultaneously and power-ups help one player or hinder another).

Said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing at Disney Interactive Studios:

Discs of Tron is considered an arcade classic as it mesmerized fans who wanted an entertaining and challenging experience derived from the innovative film. The game’s release on Xbox LIVE Arcade enables multiple generations to play the addictive game in both its original form from 25 years ago and an enhanced mode with upgraded graphics and sound.

No pricing details were provided but given that its predecessor cost 400 MSP, we expect the same for Discs of Tron.

I would expect M$ to pay me 400 points to play this garbage. More shitty arcade games and the 360 continues to lose more and more ground to the playstation network and virtual console. Regardless of how superior microsoft is in the retail games market, they continue to get stomped by both sony and nintendo in the casual games department.

Really now. Care to elaborate that theory in more details?

I have to elaborate on how 360 has the shittiest casual games on any console? Just load up the ol’ dashboard and click left on the d-pad, you’ll see just what I mean. Sony has LittleBigPlanet and we get ‘Discs of Tron’ … that’s just laughable. And the virtual console has like, 15 new games every week.

what casual games does sony have exactly? littlebigplanet IS NOT AN ARCADE GAME… its a full fledged 60$ game… thats like putting viva pinata or gears of war up against tetris

give me a break

And it’s not a “theory,” dipshit. A theory would imply that what I’ve said hasn’t been proven time and again. Unfortunately everything I’ve stated above is pure scientific law.

no what it is, is a scientific FACT that your a moron and can’t tell the difference between a disc based full fledged game like LittleBigPlanet and a 5$ arcade title , jacka$$

You may have a point about the VC and the quanity it provides. But the VC quality sucks. No HD facelift, no online play or leaderboards, just moldly old games that can be found in game stores or online for cheaper; in most cases. I’m not buying this game, but in general I love XBLA. If you don’t that’s your bad, don’t buy them then.

Actually I may refill some points to buy this one … I remember the days at 7/11 trying to kill all those freaking spiders.

Yeah, the game your thinking of (CleanSweep31) is already on marketplace. It’s just called plain “Tron” I also had fond memories of playing Tron….I played it at the local bowling alley. However, it hasn’t held up that well throughout the years. If you remember, the controls consisted of a dial type knob…. and in this “new” version the controls just don’t “feel” right.
As for Discs of Tron…. I was never a fan.
But, to each there own. I’m sure some people will be happy. :)

Once again the PS3 fan boys storm the XBox forums. Get a life lads. You know which console is the best. Really burns you up doesn’t having to accept second best now that MS has overtaken you. PlayStation was good in it’s day, but that day is over.

After saying all that though, this does look like utter crap. Arcade titles are for a bit of throw away fun anyway. They’re not meant to be played to the same degree as the retail titles and that’s where it really matters.

I don’t know what kind of small games the PS3 gets but I for one don’t care about the old crap games they throw at us… and the worst part of it is that those old games make us wait longer for the new ones. Oh well I can’t play at the moment anyway as I finally got the RROD after one year and eight months, UPS will pick up my box on monday…

Make us wait longer for the new ones? Any devs working on big projects aren’t taking time off to work on Arcade games.

What he meant was that we have to wait till February 20th to get to play an original XBLA game (considering there will be one for example). There are more than one game waiting to go on the service but it’s classic arcades such as Discs of Tron that make us wait longer, as some original game that’s ready for release will now have to wait for another week to come out (that’s in case they’re planning another title for next week but haven’t revealed it yet).

This is all hypothetical of course; it’s just an example so you get what he meant ;) .

Oooh. Yeah, don’t read and post at 3 AM, kids.

Discs of Tron is actually a pretty fun game, much much better than Tron. Without Live vs. play I don’t think I’ll buy it.

I rarely buy arcade games…and this one will not be any different. No thanks. I’d rather set my money on fire.
