The galactica game brings an experience that is out of this world!

Mass Effect DLC is a tad complicated

Having finished Mass Effect, many readers would have been delighted to know that new content was coming for the game. What people perhaps didn’t realise was that they may need to start a fresh game to actually gain access to the content in game. Cue cries of hate towards Bioware. Hit the jump for a potential spoiler-ridden explanation.

When you complete Mass Effect, the entire galaxy is shut off, meaning you can never access it again unless you restart entirely. Rather a strange decision from the developers and one that is likely to annoy gamers who finished the game last year when it was released. You’ll need an open world and have control of the Normandy spaceship before you can utilise the new purchase.

Obviously if you have a saved game prior to the end of the game, then it’s all OK. But anyone that relied solely on just the auto save and perhaps one other slot will likely be in trouble. The content adds around ninety minutes of gameplay to the game, however it’ll take that long to get to use it should you have to start all over again.

Is this news going to make you re-consider your purchase, or have you already started all over again anyway? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

This really isn’t a reply to your comment Cesar. It’s a warning to any other readers. Ahead is an end game spoiler that some nerf posted because they thought it’d be funny. Also, they’ve used another members’ name for this butchery.

The_Glovner…I know you didn’t post that, and who did is an asshat, but once again…welcome to the internet.

This is a warning to all reading this thread.

SPOILER AHEAD!!!!

I’ve completed it twice and started a new game on the hardcore difficulty setting, so i’ll probably leave this save until the content hits :)

Again, not responsible, I ain’t even finished it yet so that kinda ruined it for me too.

But as you don’t have to register for comments on the front pages then I can’t stop any sad little boy from using my name and trying to be funny.

So I apologise that there are people in the world that can’t actually stand up and speak for themselves. But hey, I can understand why he would want to pretend to be me, at least I don’t get beaten to sleep by my dads cock every night.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That’s insanely pathetic that someone is posing as someone’s else’s screen name on a video game website.

What kind of pathetic, lifeless, chum-scrubbing, bottom-feeder would you have to be t get pleasure out of that?

You are a pathetic individual. I feel sorry for your mother, she must be ashamed of you. Run upstairs and apologize to her.

In this day and age, and on hardware as unstable as the Xbox 360, how stupid do you have to be to rely solely on the auto-save feature?

I imagine the vast majority of ME players went straight into a second playthrough, as the game is one of the only titles that allows you to continue with your previous stats - plus most of the achievements (and we know how much 360 owners love their achievements!) require multiple playthroughs.

Comment by Sean on 2008-02-11 18:33:20 | Reply

Exactly - why are people complaining. You can continue on into a second playthrough with your character and the stats.

AGAIN!!!! launch 360 NO ISSUES and i know i’m not the only one… plz drop it ppl, damn

I played the game though 6 times to get all the achievements and never found it dull one bit. It is a bit of a bummer to have to start off from an older savegame but at least you don’t need to start from scratch.

Comment by Arian on 2008-02-11 23:16:26 | Reply

How do you play through it 6 times already? Goddamn, after just once I couldn’t sit through the same old Dialogue.

True, I can play the game again just because I know how to do stuff I didn’t know the first time around but 6 times?

I’ll play again with the DLC content when it comes out. Seriously, if you go through such lengths to play the game, achievements no less, then you are a sad individual. A step above the callous immature twats that steal other people’s names on this comment section of an article but a sad individual regardless.

Comment by mass9 on 2008-02-12 15:28:27 | Reply

he’s sad because he plays through a game multiple times?

Isn’t that what games (especially RPGs) are all about? Replay value. Lasting appeal. etc….?

Whatever his reason, achievements, recreation, whatever….what difference does it make to you how many times it gets played?

Read the novel? Course not, so you’ve no idea what the story is until you do. Once you read the novel you’re bound to be a lot more engrossed in the game.

I played it 6 times because I wanted to experience the game fully - with a number of different characters, hence the achievements. What did you do? Play it once with one char and that’s it? Way to go in not experiencing the rest of the classes rofl

I mean to say that yeah, I’m playing the game again because, yeah, it does have some replay value. And I certainly don’t begrudge anyone to play the game 6 or 100 times if they wish, but since the game came out just a few short months prior, fitting 6 careers in such a short time span makes you wonder what else does he do with his time?

Far be it from me to judge but really, there’s a thing outside of a game called life. It’s not enough that I have to put up with rabid fanboi gamers, but other fellow gamers giving games a bad name as breeding grounds for anti-social behavior, poor health and hygiene, etc.

Not true, not by a long shot, but who does the world pay attention to? Healthy individuals or extreme cases where people die by their video games?

Comment by H34RT 4TT4CK on 2008-02-12 21:38:13 | Reply

Hmm… nevermind, play to your hearts content, whatever.

Reading over my last post, I realized I was assuming the worst. Sorry.

Comment by mass9 on 2008-02-12 21:51:34 | Reply

6 times isn’t too much considering that I finished my first (and thus far, my only) play through in about 15 hours.

Considering that some people are on their 6th 7th or 8th playthrough of CoD4 Prestige mode, its even less signficant.

Let the boy play I say!

I took my time through the game, and yet still finished it much to my surprise - 31hrs for my first completion time. ME may seem like a massive game but it isn’t at all.

Once you’ve finished it, you know all the tricks to level up quickly, and storm through the storyline. All my achievements were done through the xmas hols, so its hardly time wasted.

If you enjoy a game, then play it to the death. I went through Dead Rising 8 times, why? Because the game is designed so that you don’t get to accomplish everything in a single go.

I guess it’s personal taste then. I can’t play a game on career unless some time has elapsed and I could use a refresher or new content is up.

Mass Effect, however, I’m going through again just three days after beating it because there’s a lot of the world that I’ve nixed in favor of just beating the campaign. Now I’m going for achievements and because it’s actually kinda fun/interesting.

I put down Bioshock (1/4 through on the second play) and yet to finish Assassin’s Creed. And I won’t even get in to COD 4 (I will finish it, I will finish it!). So many games, so little time.

You can make different choices of conversation which can have quite a drastic effect on how the game turns out. That’s why they did it like that so that when you replay, you DON’T have to go through the same boring conversations. Some bits have to be the same in order to drive the story forward, but not all of it. I’m on my 2nd playthrough at the moment and it’s completely different as I’m working on the Renegade path now after having done the Paragon path the first time through and I can guarantee, it’s totally different. And I can’t wait to get to play through #3 where I can then change my class and starting kicking ass with biotics. Mass Effect is definitely one of the best 360 titles so far IMHO.

Yea the Downloadable content will be OK but 90min isnt a lot.

Wonder how big it will be in Size.

What I’ve noticed about PS3 fanboys is that they have substandard litiracy skills and continually go on saying 360 owners are idiots.
Where as 360 owners are actually quite well versed and comprehensible.

Hmm… I’ll think I’ll stick with my 360, I’ll take the PS3 when my brain rots (not likely).

Comment by Anthony on 2008-02-12 22:23:49 | Reply

Everyone I talk to at GameStop and Best Buy say Sony is on the verge of dropping out of the console race if they can’t gain enough sales and profit from the PS3.

Face it… Sony overhyped the PS3 and aren’t delivering on their promises (where’s Home, backward compatability, DualShock 3?).

Xbox 360 has a huge following in America and parts of Europe (only in Japan are they suffering). This trend will likely continue if Sony can’t convince enough customers to buy PS3s.

yes, because part-time retail store employees making JUST above minimum wage are usually right on the mark with their information.

It really sucks that you can’t explore further on when you have finished the game and that you have to start over. I know you can play with your old character, but it still sucks.
