CoD 4 patch now in certification

Delight all round for those waiting on the patch that promises so much for Call of Duty 4, as it has been announced that it has been passed over to Microsoft. Waiting on certification can take some time, but all being well it means we should see something in the next week or two.

Here’s a run down of what to expect just in case you’ve forgotten:

New Kill Cams

  • We’ve added new Kill Cams for everything. So now those “WTF!” grenades that seemingly come from no where, you can see that a guy threw it over the house, it hit a tree branch, bounced off a rock, into a tiny window, where you happened to be pointing out of, and say…… whoa. Follow behind RPGs and M203’s kill cams, claymores, Airstrikes where you can follow the bomb from the plane until it hits you.

Host Migration

  • Now you won’t have to be dropped back by yourself when a host leaves. Instead, everyone will stay together, a new host will be assigned, and the game will auto-start back up. Keeping everyone together, no more re-inviting, re-joining games because some host leaves. This has been a tall order and something that we’ve put a lot of work into which has allowed us to really optimize online play all around not just specifically with Host migration.

Improved Sniper / ACOG Accuracy

  • Sniper and ACOG scopes have been tweaked and are really improved. I use to not snipe at all (mainly because I’m a horrible sniper), but now it’s so much more fluid and natural, while still having the same difficulty to use, it has no more “WTF I know I hit that guy!” moments.

Upgraded Spectator Cam

  • Now when you’re in spectator mode you can follow them in 3rd person, switch to their first person view, or rotate the camera in a full 360 degrees around whoever you’re watching.

Quick Mute Option

  • Users will now be able to quick mute players on the fly by pulling up the scoreboard in-game or via the lobby by simply going to their name and hitting the mute assigned button. As quickly as calling in and designating an airstike. So no longer getting killed while trying to make your way through the Xbox blades for the mute option so you can shut up the guy who always seems to find it funny to sing into his mic or cover up for his lack of skill by telling you how to play Domination his way.

Improved Network Performance For Larger Games

  • 18 player games now require more bandwidth to host, resulting in smoother performance for players.

Optimized Server Selection for First Match

  • Server selection is now optimized to select best bandwidth servers associated by LSP.

Fixed “Playlist Older Than Host” Error

  • Player will no longer get error when entering games.

Additional Start Spawn Locations in All Maps

  • Added a minimum of 9 extra start spawns on each side of all maps.

There’s also murmurings about tweaking some of the playlist options soon, just to mix it up a bit to keep everyone interested. If you have any suggestions, Community Manager Robert Bowling is asking you drop him a message saying what would be a good idea. You can easily do this if you head over to his site and use the plug-in on the right. He’s open to any serious suggestions, so it’s worth a go if you have a preference.

Keep an eye on his blog for more interesting news regarding Call of Duty 4, because with the new maps coming in the not so distant future, it’s likely to be a great place for intel.

This is an awesome upgrade.

“Upgraded Spectator Cam” - for some reason the spec cam always bothered me. Maybe I die to much… lol. I like this one.

“Additional Start Spawn Locations in All Maps” - Always a plus

“where you can follow the bomb from the plane until it hits you.” - Awesome!!

Now let’s get new maps!!! At least 5 of them!

Very nice up-date. Though, I’ve never had an issue with the sniping rifle. Hmph…I guess I’ve just been lucky. ~shrugs~ Having new spawn points is a nice touch too.

what about the .50 cal sniper not killing with 1 bullet but needing 2 or 3 sometimes thats bolocks
becouse in real life it will take your head off even if you get shot in the ear or take most of you arm off if you got shot in the pinky so that gun should kill with 1 bullet always even if you hit them running past.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-02-14 17:30:29 | Reply

In real life, there’s no “martyrdom” or “last stand” either. It’s all gameplay decisions. If the .50 killed everyone in 1 hit, it would be far too overpowered and ruin the game (see AWP from Counter-Strike).

Comment by mu on 2008-02-14 18:25:42 | Reply

you don’t snipe with the barrett do you jackson?

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-02-14 22:15:32 | Reply

I’ve got the most of the challenges complete for it, why? It’s plenty accurate, I don’t know why people bitch about it so much. The really, really long distances are kind of deceiving when sniping, but that usually only occurs on a few choice maps. But yea, I use it plenty, although I prefer the M16 or G3.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-02-14 22:16:32 | Reply

*got most of the didn’t mean to put “the” before most….

Comment by mu on 2008-02-14 22:45:26 | Reply

i think he is referring to the faulty hit detection. i feel that when they patch the hit detection, we will be seeing a lot more fools go down in one hit. especially with stopping power. i am constantly hitting people three times to get the kill i feel i should have gotten on the first shot. i guess we will have to wait and see what changes.

I can’t help but wonder why the hosting problem wasn’t corrected before the game was released. How dd they not consider it a problem until it went public? Do they not test games anyore? Do they not think about shit like that? WTF?

Or does this explain it?

“This has been a tall order and something that we’ve put a lot of work into which has allowed us to really optimize online play all around not just specifically with Host migration.”

They knew it was a problem before the release but they also knew it would take a long time to correct? Is that the deal?

Sorry…but I just don’t understand how shit like that is acceptable. It’s not like it requires a Mensa membership to know how things will go down. Hire some people with the brains to know about these problems before the release…and also have the balls to fix that crap before you ship it out to collect money from consumers.

This “release it today, fix it tomorrow” bullshit has to stop.

Well to be honest, I’d rather they released the game in the state it was in back in November than to still be waiting for it today, host issues or not.

I agree that when a very broken game is released then patched months later, it’s not acceptable. But this is just one minor issue that for me isn’t that big of a deal, so I’m grateful.

For once, i agree. The issues with COD4 were minor, especially when compared with a game like Assassin’s Creed.

I’m STOKED for the all the new features. Spectating was broken … I can’t tell you how much i wanted to be able to move the camera around in Search and Destroy while I’m waiting for the next round.

I hope when they say the ACOG scopes have been tweaked they mean that the don’t zoom quite so much … it’d be nice to have a scope on the M4 or g36C, but the ACOG is nearly useless on those guns.

All in all, very exciting. It’d be cool to see the playlists get shaken up again. it’d be cool to see some new challenges (I’d love to see one for what I call going Al-Qaeda … or running into an opponent’s lair cooking a grednade and let it go off in you hand for the kill … a regular suicide bomber)

Comment by FF on 2008-02-14 17:58:11 | Reply

In some respects, I agree with you. The host issue alone is not a big deal. The problem is, when we let (as if we have much choice) them do this with some stuff, they tend to do it with a lot of stuff. Give an inch, take a mile type thing.

And let’s be honest here…..if they had to correct this issue before the game was released (and before they started pulling in the profit) do you not think they’d have it sorted out sooner rather than later? Wouldn’t they get the job done faster if they had to have it done before it was released?

It’s like paying a contractor before the job is complete. They get paid and the work slows down. Progress is slow because the incentive is removed.

The trend is going in the wrong direction, is my point…I guess. I believe the ability to update over Live has created some apathy with respect to fixing problems.

I pay the full price at purchase and I would like a completed (or at least a more complete) product. If they want to fix the game later, then maybe I should finish paying them later. :)

I know bugs will slip through, but something as obvious as this hosting issue should not, IMO. It wasn’t some little corner aspect of the game…this problem effected every single person who played Live, and it should not have been released with that in mind.

In spite of my desire to play a game ASAP, I would prefer a completed game at release.

Comment by Kid Outhouse on 2008-02-14 21:09:06 | Reply

Thats bullshit. The game clearly has serious networking code issues that dampen the experience for everyone who plays online. I can’t recall the last multiplayer match I’ve played that didn’t suffer from inordinate lag and hit detection problems. If the release had been delayed, we would have seen a complete and WORKING version of the game probably before Christmas. The fact that it was released incomplete and needed a patch only delayed things further.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-02-14 22:21:05 | Reply

You complain that every fucking game lags for you, so your whining about it on CoD4 as well holds no weight. It RARELY lags for nearly everyone I’ve talked to.

And Whatev, there is a challenge for that, it’s called Misery Loves Company, it’s under Humiliation I think.

stfu?

PRESTIGE IS JUST A WAY OF SAYING “I DON’T NEED ALL THESE PERKS AND GREAT GUNS, I WANT TO GO BACK TO SQUARE ONE AND SEE IF I’M GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY IT WITH STICKS AND STONES!” THEM BADGES ARE YOUR REWARD FOR THE SACRIFICE. ALSO, IT’S NICE GETTING THEM CHALLENGES AGAIN AND AGAIN. LOVE THAT SOUNDBYTE WHEN YOU GET ONE!

we are now celebrating the two week anniversary of the certification process of the patch we waited two months for. of course, we still have awhile to wait if cod2’s six month patch process is any indication. at least they’re not charging us for it.
