Except the article is flawed from the outset by giving bias to the PS3 which the guy freely admits to owning in his opening gambit.

Take your Blu Ray trolling elsewhere. That's no more truth then anyone else's opinion. Here's some actual truth about Netflix:

#1 Netflix does not stream HD movies so who cares whether downloaded HD is better than Blu Ray.

#2 Netflix does not download the movie to the computer it is watched as a stream.

And my opinion is Sony is the worst when it comes to how they treat their consumers. Support them and you help them to do more bad things like installing root kits off their CDs onto their customer's computers without their knowledge, killing Lik-Sang, nasty DRM, etc.

What you see in the movies is rendered using huge server farms, often taking days to do so. From one of the people who worked on Pixar's Ratatouille:

"During Ratatouille, the renderfarm consisted of about 850 machines with nearly 3200 processors between them. When rendering the final Ratatouille film frames on a 2.66 GHz processor, each frame took an average of six hours. It took about 1532 CPU-years to render Ratatouille, including the lower-resolution renders done at various points in the pipeline and working iterations. That means that if we only had one CPU in the renderfarm, Ratatouille wouldn't have been released until the year 3539."

6 hours for ONE FRAME of final animation. While cool things like shaders and AA help make computer game graphics look CGish, we got a LOOONG way to go before consoles will be powerful enough to look like Dreamworks and Pixar flicks.

yeh defo, its only a matter of time for home computers to get to where films are now. the graphics used in todays blockbusters run on massive supercomputers, but give a couple of generations and theyll be hard pressed to make either look more real. then theyll stop us from playing violent games because ill be able to map my neighbours fat head onto a photoreal npc through mobile camera tech and beat him to death in every conceivable way. i hate that fat twat.

predetermined animation vs. dynamic physics?

I remember reading somewhere that the tech in games today is comparable to the CGI animation available when Toy Story 1 was released. Something like that....

Why are video game graphics so far behind computer animation (Pixar, Dreamworks)?

Couldn't you just build a game system that can handle games that have real computer animation?

This is cool. Think of it this way. You know MS gets money off this deal. It helps get movies to the 360 this much quicker. Why not sign off on this... it's huge!

Watch for Blockbuster to sign with the PS3... I wouldn't be surprised.

so for anyone who wants to go the "oh noes netflix dropped hd dvd" route, first you must not have been a member of netflix for the hd dvd's cause as those who were already know the service sucked anyways. waiting over a month for a movie thats in you "que" sucked and was about the average waiting time.

as far as downloads to the 360? I think it's very possible that netflix will use their own equipment to stream the media, in order to get movies you have to have their disc that you insert into the 360, who's to say that their disc doesnt contain the info to connect you to the netflix servers to download the movies? I guess only time will tell.

wow you can really tell a ps3 fanboy... first of all the traffic isnt an issue anymore from what i can tell... and i hate to tell you this but stop bashing video because sony is planning similar for the ps3... let me guess thats ok but the 360 having it is bad....

last i checked when i go on the XBL theirs like 300-400 demos... on my ps3 theirs ... umm... 15-20? now which service is more "game oriented"

and the dashboard works perfectly... the question you need to ask yourself who decided that taking an interface designed for a PSP mobile device, would be the perfect solution for a 50" plasma.

analyst make those predictions every time around, its called a 5-6 year life cycle of consoles before pc's start crushing them performance wise and they become obsolete... your beloved ps3 will as well.

they only havent mentioned the ps3 yet because sony hasnt really hinted at anything yet... and all their gloating about a "10 year console"... which was the same with the ps3... but its not true, they sell the old unit for 10 years but the new one is out after 5 just like the rest... the reason the extra 5 years? easy they drop the price to 120-99$ and they can still sell to the poorer families and countries for that additional 5 years.

The fact is come 2010-2011 we'll see new consoles emerging from all 3 camps

Now go back to ps3fanboy.com or something and stop annoying people.

and the dashboard works perfectly… the question you need to ask yourself who decided that taking an interface designed for a PSP mobile device, would be the perfect solution for a 50″ plasma.

analyst make those predictions every time around, its called a 5-6 year life cycle of consoles before pc’s start crushing them performance wise and they become obsolete… your beloved ps3 will as well.

they only havent mentioned the ps3 yet because sony hasnt really hinted at anything yet… and all their gloating about a “10 year console”… which was the same with the ps3… but its not true, they sell the old unit for 10 years but the new one is out after 5 just like the rest… the reason the extra 5 years? easy they drop the price to 120-99$ and they can still sell to the poorer families and countries for that additional 5 years.

The fact is come 2010-2011 we’ll see new consoles emerging from all 3 camps

Now go back to ps3fanboy.com or something and stop annoying people.

So Netflix decided to go BluRay exclusive - SO WHAT ????
Blu Ray is an HD Disc format. Nothing to do with downloads. So 360 will get the same range of films the service will offer on PS3 ( and all the HD DVD movies will be available on PS3)

More junk going through the XBL servers! They can't cope with all the junk traffic recently introduced. XBL is just going to turn into ANOTHER video download store and sod the gaming.

And whoever decides the look of the dashboard should be shown the door, it looks a mess and become a pain to navigate to anything.

Still, With anylists predicting that both Microsoft and Nintendo will release new consoles in two years, maybe they have put junior staff or work experience in charge of recent upgrades. It looks like amatuer work.

Netflix watch instantly on your PC is not HD so no big deal if they drop HD-DVD. I can't find anything on their site help or in my account info about streaming to the 360. Hope it happens! Also it would only be unlimited viewing if you have the unlimited DVD plan. I have the 1 DVD/$5 plan that gives me 5 hours of viewing online.
