Activision announces Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for Xbox 360

Proving that more and more big artists are clambering at the chance to immortalise themselves in Guitar Hero (and lapping up the monetary royalties that go with it), Activision has confirmed today that “America’s Greatest Rock ‘N Roll Band,” Aerosmith, are to star in their very own version of the rhythm-based music title.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will give players the chance to play out the career of Aerosmith from their very first concerts back in 1970, up to their Grammy award-winning performances and beyond, right up until the present day. Of course, the title will be packed with the band’s greatest hits, but to rule out any Aerosmith overkill, these will be interspersed with songs from bands that The Bad Boys from Boston have either performed with or been inspired by in some way.

The band’s lead singer Steven Tyler was typically modest about the collaboration:

“Any band that can go from ‘Don’t Want to Miss A Thing’ (Aerosmith’s #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking ‘Sweet Emotion’ to the cheekiness of ‘Love in an Elevator,’ to the classic ballad ‘Dream On’ shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies.”

And as the dollar signs descended in front of the eyes of Activision and RedOctane, they both struggled to hide their delight:

“We are extremely excited that Aerosmith chose to team up with Guitar Hero, bringing one of the world’s all-time best-selling artists together with one of the biggest video game brands, to deliver a new and unique interactive way for our customers to connect with artists and their music,” said Dusty Welch, head of publishing for Activision/RedOctane. “This partnership will give Aerosmith, a band that has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, a powerful and innovative platform to reach their fans and new audiences.”

To mark the announcement, owners of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will have the opportunity to download and jam to Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” The song will be available for free from February 16-18 on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will be released on the Microsoft Xbox 360 in June 2008.

I am going to go to the store and pre-order this today! I’d do it online but you have to pay the full price to pre-order online.

Jesus god no. Terrible idea. Should’ve focused on DLC instead, the audience is screaming out for it and frankly are starting to get tired of waiting. This sort of diversion isn’t going to help.

Does this replace the previously-announced Guitar Hero IV, or is this as well as that? I assume it’s based on the GH3 engine, if they’re releasing it so soon?

Guitar Hero IV is coming out in Fall ;)

Where the Hell are ACDC tracks. Rock Band and GH need ACDC in their life!!!

Pretty hot, but I wish they would make this an expansion pack (a la Tomb Raider Anniversary) for download on the XBLM. That would be way cooler than chalking up $50 (and you know it will be that much) at the store for another disc.

How many freeking Guitar Hero games do they need? Leave 3 out for awhile and concentrate DLC. Activision is getting no more of my cash for the GH franchise. But seeing that I do own GH3 I’ll definitely take up the free offer for Dream On probably the best Aerosmith song IMO. Rock Band keeps pumping out good DLC and they keep getting my money. I think putting 3 GH games on in less than a year is not a very wise move on their part with Rock Band’s ton of DLC that will be released every week this year.

Another nail in the Guitar Hero coffin.
Bring on Rock Band for the rest of the world…

Of all the bands out there, Activision pick Aerosmith?

Comment by StGermain on 2008-02-15 19:24:06 | Reply

I like the idea but I don’t want to pay the full price for it… they have no real development costs here at all, the game-engine is there and the songs are there. I’d pay let’s say 25€ for it…

I’d also like to see a guitar here legends of country :)

I wish this was DLC … I don’t need another freaking GH game … but this sounds awesome. What to do???? i wish there was a lot of Aerosmith on Rock Band … I wanna sing walk this way … or dude looks like a lady … Or Don’t wanna miss a thing … or (insert one of their numerous awesome songs here)

no chance I’ll buy this at $59.99

Comment by Wet Vein on 2008-02-15 20:32:41 | Reply

The only way I’ll pay anything even close to full price is if the game comes with Liv Tyler minus her clothes.

I might be willing to pay $20 Canadian…. but that will never happen so I’ll be passing on this one. Now if it were The Beatles… Pink Floyd or The Stones I’d buy it faster than you can say Steven Tyler’s an ugly mother f*cker.

Yeah your right, but our games usually still cost $10 more.

Hey, now I can finally play like Joe Perry!

Oh, wait, I can already do that for free on a real guitar. Sorry, GH, I guess I won’t be buying into the gimmick. =[

Also of note: this is basically Activision charging you $60 for DLC.

aerosmith fucking blows

Comment by Veritas on 2008-02-15 21:22:27 | Reply

Now they do.

They were good in the beginning, before Steven Tyler’s voice got fucked up. See: “Dream On”

Comment by mass9 on 2008-02-15 22:06:24 | Reply

like a great many comedians, when a rock band gets sober and stops abusing drugs their ‘art’ suffers.

Chevy Chase was only good when he was coked out of his mind on SNL.
The Toxic Twins were good when they too were coked out of their brains.

I guess the inspiration is lost with the drugs. =[

This is overkill on the Guitar Hero franchise. I’m so glad I have Rock Band instead so I can DL songs that I want and have plenty of them.

Comment by Aaron on 2008-02-15 21:33:39 | Reply

I’ll have the free track, but they can keep the game…I’d much rather have it as DLC where I can choose the Aerosmith songs I like and leave the rest. But oh well.

Comment by Wet Vein on 2008-02-15 22:15:54 | Reply

You know what would be nice….. if the next GH would let you rip the songs from GH2 & 3 to your hard drive… then we could have a great Ole Shindig.
B4 you jump on me,… yeah I know it’ll never happen, with DRM and the ability to rent or borrow and all that shit. But still, it would be nice. Who knows, maybe next gen will be different. Fingers & balls crossed.

I can’t believe just how low Activision are stooping with the GH franchise. I loved GH1 & 2 but soon tired of GH3.. where’s the mother of all content that we were promised? and why is the DLC so pricey when compare with Rock Band.

Rock Band is a far far superior title, I’m so glad I imported it. With Activision doing an “EA” with the Guitar Hero franchise it’s beginning to look like the end of Guitar Hero for me.

On a side note however, it’s quite odd that this is the 2nd Aerosmith rhythm game (after ‘The Quest For Fame’, with its ‘virtual guitar’) and as far as I know, no other band has had an entire game devoted to their music…. and then there was that god-awful Revolution X game. Their music from the 70’s was pretty good… but THREE video games devoted to them? Tis a little excessive.

Very nice,I’ll going to buy this at launch. But I’d die to have many Guns N’ Roses songs, not to forget Stones,Pink Floyd and Ac/Dc of course..

i have a feeling this will only be sold at $39.99 as they did for “rockin the 80’s” ps2 version, and that is still a high price considering theres no way theyll have 40 aerosmith songs on there

Frikkin AEROSMITH!??

Please, Make it stop…

Genius! I can see Activision stealing it now.

Just an extra “lol,” that was awesome.

Comment by Pedle Zelnip on 2008-02-16 18:26:16 | Reply

LOL….

At any rate as much as I love Aerosmith (and not just the stuff from the 70’s, as Pump was arguably their best album), I can’t see myself forking out $40-$60 for this.

Comment by Harzo on 2008-02-17 10:56:02 | Reply

God some of you people really like to moan, it makes me laugh! Why all the hate towards EA and Activision?! If you don’t want the game, DONT BUY IT! I for one am happy to get a FREE song this weekend, so quit the yapping and be grateful for once! *Rant over*

Comment by Ryan on 2008-02-17 17:32:16 | Reply

In general I’m opposed to a rhythm game containing all tracks from only one artist. I like a little variety when I get these types of games. Also, Guitar Hero should take notes on Rock Band’s DLC structure.

Comment by SpykedVodka on 2008-03-10 09:02:38 | Reply

Damn this totally rocks! Without a doubt the GREATEST AMERICAN (American folks) ROCK BAND IS HONORED. This totally rocks and I just pre-ordered it. LONG LIVE AEROSMITH! The last Aerosmith Game that came out like 10 years ago Revolution X totally rocked, so while this is a music game it should still be pretty good. Aerosmith has always been at the forefront of technology when it comes to this shit.

Ok. here’s the deal.
As a GH or RB owner, you have to wait until the company releases new songs…

Guitar Wizard, on the other hand, will allow you to install ANY song for which you can find a MIDI file. ANY song. ANY group.

But of course, I’m biased, since I work for the company that is developing it. >:)
