Xbox 360 premiums with 100GB harddrive the new standard? [Updated]

Our Dutch friends from Fok! Games posted a quote from the official Xbox forums earlier today stating that from now on all the Xbox 360 Premiums come with a 100GB harddisk instead of the current 20GB version. The post was made by a Best Buy employee from New Jersey. He said that their Microsoft representative told his supervisor that if they’d receive any Xbox 360 Premiums they had to hold on to them untill the end of March. The reason for this was that from then on all the Xbox 360 Premiums from then on would be shipped with a 100GB big HDD. According to the source, the price would remain the same ($400). We call the highly unlikely card on this one, 100GB notebook HDD’s are very expensive and there no real need for them in the Xbox 360. We’re looking to get any confrimation, we’ll inform you as soon as we hear anything at all.

The original post:

i work at bestbuy, Store located in New Jersey. Our Microsoft rep contacted our store, and spoke to my supervisor and told him that if we receive any xbox 360 Premiums, to hold them and cannot sell them until the end of March, she stated that the reason for this was because the xbox 360 premiums would be shipped with 100 gigabyte HDDs, instead of the 20 GIG HDDs avalible now, she also said that the 100 gig HDD premiums would sell for the same price of $400. In bestbuys retail weekly i also read that in the beginning of April bestbuy is doing a promotion from April 2nd until April 15th, this promotion has to do with the media department only, they stated that we will have a huge inventory of xbox 360s. I know that bestbuys inventory and promotion news is 100% offical, but the 100 GIG HDD is not 100% offical, but seems very likely.

Update: Microsoft flat out denies the rumor.

Lol, from Fok! Sounds like fuck.
Anyway, back to the point. THE SAME PRICE AS STANDARD?! I forked out the money for a premium pack, for a 20gig HDD, now they’re releasing it with 100gig, for the same price! Full of shit. How much will it retail for seperate.
Plus, why do they cost so much more than a standard PC HDD.

Tut Tut Tut….MS making money however they can.

Remember it’s a rumor TRIGGER M4N, and Fok! is a good site ;)

Indd, if it’s true then MS pisses off alot of customers and the only way they can make it up to them/us is by recalling the 20GB HDD’s, replacing them by 100GB HDD’s and copying all the data from the old HDD’s to the new ones. And since 100GB HDD’s are really expensive and not really needed I don’t think it’s plausible.

Lol no, they’re not insane ;) That’s gonna cost them a lot of money

the cheapest 20 gig laptop hard drive is about $60 and m$ want $100 for a drive and enclosere that is not that bad

Dave; I don’t see how the price of a 20 gig HDD is relevant here? :S

TRIGGER:
Thank you for pointing out the blantantly obvious mate :P

His grammar isn’t good enough to be taken seriously. If “I” is not capitalized I don’t listen to you.

This could be a precursor to downloading Xbox 1 games. This could be the backward compatability update we’re not getting…if it was, I would immediately forgive Microsoft. :D

This could also be for downloading TV ep’s or something but I still don’t see why they would do such a thing. Standard consumers don’t need a 100GB HD on their 360.

It could be for that direct tv blade that was rumored a few weeks back. Like Nino kind of put in a round about way.

Actually, that could be it. Also, a Xbox game could theoretically fit on a 20 gig hard drive - more than one. Oblivion only takes up 5 gigs, and it’s gonna be fricking huge. What could Super Monkey Ball Deluxe take up? :D

Well, it’s plausable, that’s a fact.

100 GB hard drive would be necessacary with the Episodic content that MarketPlace is supposed to be delivering on over the summer. SiN Episodes and Half-Life 2: The Aftermath, anyone?

And, if a Direct TV emerges (alongside the the much desired update to tweak various minor annoyances) it’s entirely plausible that it could become a necessity.

I myself don’t believe this, doubling the HD size would be okay, but making it 5 times the size after less than half a year? Very unbelievable.

And also, 100Gb laptop drives are damn expensive. Microsoft has no reason to take an even bigger cash hit on their console before PS3 release is anywhere near. Rank 9 out of 10 on my bullshit-o-meter.

Only thing the rumor has speaking for it is that the guy posting it seems plausible enough. It’s no new account, it’s an active gold account, it’s someone who made enough posts to get rank 2 on Xbox.com forums. My bet? Someone at work perhaps played a prank on him and he’s gullible enough to sincerely believe it.

But hey, we’ll seen soon enough :)

Im happy with my 20GB HDD at the moment…
I got few demos, trailers all Arcade Games/Demos and still got 10GB left…

I guess you would only need a 100GB if they planned on using the marketplace to sell HD-Films? Bigger Arcade Games? Allow Ripping Of HD-DVD Films to HDD? Who knows…
Have to wait and see :D

If I could transfer my saves I would be happy :)

Well with all the marketplace content, the popularity of demos, the future marketplace content coming, the DirectTV rumor - streaming video IS coming to the 360 no if and’s or buts.
This 100gig HD so likely is 100% true, we knew it was coming, we just didn’t know when.
Now, tie this into the foil issue. Anyone notice that MS is saying that the foil is a better solution if there is plans of alot of RE-WORKING. “That still has me thinking why would they not just use paste”

So whats the chances and lets all hope that maybe they will let us trade in ours (maybe for a small fee), and they will just refurbish our old ones. Pipedream though… :)

I know the xbox360 can play mp3 cds, but can you transfer those files to your HDD? If anyone knows how, let me know.

To answer this rumor getting a lot of steam: during April, will Xbox 360 will come bundled with a 100 gig hard drive? No. Not true. False. Here’s the official statement:
“We haven’t announced any additional hard drives for the Xbox 360 beyond the 20GB version available today.”
