New 360 SKU to have 60GB HDD?

Here’s a rumour that definitely makes sense: Microsoft are apparently looking to upgrade the current Premium offering of a 20GB Hard Drive to that of a 60GB Hard Drive, meaning you won’t have to buy an Elite should you want to store more than one film.

Trusted Reviews kick-started the rumour, citing well regarded sources (author Gordon Kelly also links to the time when he was spot on about Apple upgrading to a 16GB iPhone, so he has credibility). Apparently dates are not set in stone, however Microsoft do want to get it all sorted before the end of their financial year, so we are looking at some time in Quarter Two for this.

Interestingly, Kelly also states that Microsoft are apparently toying with the idea of introducing a new SKU. He believes a Blu-Ray tie in would be the most likely answer, which links nicely with all the recent news that’s been swirling about the issue.

Is it being cut out of the loop?

Throwing some hope into the issue, could this be the move that seals the Arcade SKU’s fate? Fade that one out, make the Premium the entry-level option and put the 60GB in between that and the Elite? Regardless, this news ties in rather nicely with the price drop rumour that has also been floating about recently, so it could be time for some action.

This week will surely be remembered for all the rumours floating around, however there’s a lot of substance to each of them, so here’s to hoping that Microsoft shed some light on the issue in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the rumour update. I was wondering what other people might be speculating about this week.

Don’t forget to tell us about the aliens at Area 51.

Personally I think it would be wise of MS to scrap all models without a HDD and then allow developers to require a HDD for their games in order to help offset the limitations of the DVD9.(By being able to compress their data more) Then maybe give all the people that bought a Core/Arcade 360 a HDD at cost. Just my opinion…

agree… all the 20gigs lying around could be put to use, if microsoft mismanaged their inventory…

before they release a “60 GB” 360, they should upgrade the elite to about 250 GB, then put any 20 gb hdds for the arcade or core.

I thought the front of the box said “Girl Party!”, did a double-take, and then was somewhat disappointed.

When next generation of consoles comes, I will wait and get “better offer”.
I bought Xbox360 premium/pro and if I had waited for few months, I would now have same console, with same price, but with HDMI, more silent drive and anyways a console without RRoD..

if you call two years waiting for a few months, then wait away…

theirs a bigger issue… your an idiot.

PS2 went through so many revisions and getting very required things like… ETHERNET!

HDMI wasn’t a requirement, size and silent isn’t a day 1 requirement….

those things are features that evolve over time. What i’m waiting to see is a slimmer, cheaper 60gb 360 :)

It’s about time they started thinking that maybe the 20GB should be upgraded. I was thinking 40GB but 60GB is obviously a better ideal.

I say scrap the console with no HDD altogether.

It’s about time Microsoft upgraded the 20 GB unit. Put the 20 GB hard drive in the Arcade/Core system, up the Premium system to 60 GB, and leave the Elite alone.
