Islands DLC for Burnout Paradise will be free

Despite being one of many EA’s (with the emphasis on EA) development studios, Criterion Games has lightened up the official forums by announcing that all the islands in the making for Burnout Paradise will be offered on the Xbox Live Marketplace for free. That is not to say every single piece of downloadable content will be free of charge however, said Criterion’s Alex Ward.

I stated yesterday that access to the new downloadable islands in Burnout Paradise would be free. That’s not to say ALL of the downloadable content we are working on will be free. We will charge (price TBC) for some stuff. What’s important to know is that we see DLC in a totally different way. So far, with many games, DLC has been secondary ‘extras’ type stuff, a different costume in an RPG, a different car in a racing game, and so on. We see DLC as significant additional content which expands the game experience. We see it as continuing to develop the game which we worked on. Taking it further almost to the point of making a new game.

New game modes are very important to us, but it’s about more than that. Expect more details soon, I’d love to say more but we’re still working on this stuff.

There you have it! Expect to see the first batch of DLC “soon.â€

this is how dlc should be. whether they held it back on purpose to give it to us later, or they just weren’t finished with it, it gave me time to totally learn the rest of the city, and be begging for an excuse to get back to paradise. props to criterion, m$ and ea on this one, i am totally impressed.

“We see DLC as significant additional content which expands the game experience. We see it as continuing to develop the game which we worked on. Taking it further almost to the point of making a new game”

Coming from anyone involved w/ EA, that statement sounds extremely odd. Consider the many full titles they (EA) have released in the past. A full priced game with little improvement or justification…but now they see DLC as “almost to the point of making a new game”.

Someone needs to contact the home office and talk this over with upper management. I think they’ll be less than pleased.

Or is this the latest effort to patch the public relations nightmare that is EA?

wow ff, you sound a little too upset about this very good news. and no, i don’t think anyone needs to “contact the home office and talk this over with upper management.” i am sure they are well aware.

just because ea has traditionally sucked, doesn’t mean you have to complain the first time they don’t. besides, i am SURE it was criterions decision, and they probably had to fight hard for it already. why rock the boat?

he did say “Coming from anyone involved w/ EA, that statement sounds extremely odd.”

gotta let him off the hook on that one. criterion is involved with ea, who are we to judge what sounds odd to him.

let’s be clear at what i mean:

i know there part of EA, but it’s not like they devolped “The godfather” where cheats were DLC.

This is there own oppinion, just ’cause EA’s the publisher dosn’t mean that they share the same views as the devolper.

I can’t stand EA, but Criterion are a good solid development company and the Burnout series has always been interesting in each incarnation. I don’t mind DLC for a game like this if it’s substantial additional gameplay, but not the rip=off pish like cheats and unlocking full abilities and all that typical, blatant EA money grabbing. EA may be crap, in particular when it comes to tired sports franchises (Tiger Woods being a prime example with more bugs per square inch than any other game I know), but they do at least have the savvy to keep going with the Burnout franchise, because it is GOOD.
