No multiplayer for Prototype
Announced back in August 2007, Prototype is an open-world game that has you jumping around like some Spider-Man, thrusting menacing spikes through people’s bodies, switching identities by means of consuming the souls of others and much, much more. Recently, TeamXbox was lucky enough to get an exclusive look at the powers possessed by the protagonist Alex Mercer, and while the long list of available supernatural abilities certainly is promising, the news that multiplayer isn’t going to make the final the cut is slightly disappointing.
Tim Bennison, Executive Producer at Radical Entertainment, offered an extensive explanation as to why multiplayer had to be cut from Prototype:
“From its inception PROTOTYPE was planned first and foremost as a single player open-world/action game. Naturally, with Alex’s genetically mutated shape-shifting abilities, we started to explore what would happen if he were to sub-divide into two PROTOTYPEs and what kind of multiplayer gameplay we could create around that concept. We’ve been looking at this potential multiplayer idea much more closely as PROTOTYPE’s development has been progressing, and while it’s a great concept and gameplay bonus, our conclusion is that we won’t be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story.
We want gamers to really dig into the main elements of PROTOTYPE – find out about Alex and his past, play through all the storyline and uncover everything there is to find out in the Web of Intrigue, explore all Alex’s different powers and abilities, and use the ‘Deceive or Destroy’ gameplay to get through the game in multiple ways. As you can see there’s already a ton for us to deliver just in PROTOTYPE’s single player experience, so we really need ALL of our resources focused on shipping what we originally set out to do – PROTOTYPE as a ground-breaking, single player open-world/action title.”
While Prototype definitely won’t include any multiplayer mode whatsoever from the get-go, there’s a slight chance that co-op play will be added at a later date via Xbox Live Marketplace, that is if the game does well at retail. Meeting the company’s sales projections would also open the door to a sequel, for which “multiplayer will definitely be on the table from the start.” Multiplayer or not, Prototype appears to have more than enough going for it to offer a solid single-player experience worthy of those $60.
Prototype is slated to ship this Fall on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Who gives a crap, does every game need MP deathmatch these days? I hope more devs stop wasting there time on mp thrown in at the last minute and spend there time more wisely polishing up the most important parts of their games.
I agree, the best game ever (Oblivion) was SP only as well.
I am going to haft to disagree. Multiplayer is where it is at these days. A good SP is good and all, but MP adds A LOT more replay value.
Unless the game is good enough.
See: Oblivion, Mass Effect
ooooooh the big debate- if the storyline is good then sp will do. if its just sandbox mayhem them mp shouldve been in their mind from the start.
if it keeps you enthralled solely through good voice acting, script and setting then multiplayer isnt needed.
Well, I was thinking more about the choices. Oblivion has a massive amount from the start, and Mass Effect actually -rewards- players for playing again - which is something I missed from older games, on top of offering a multitude of paths. But yeah, script, voice acting, etc. also play a large part/
It’s not so much the lack of a “multiplayer deathmatch” that I’m disappointed with, but the lack of co-op. This game definitely dropped off my list of potential buys.
Why? Does single player gaming not appeal to anyone anymore?
I have to admit, unless you’re playing something like a football game in the same room as your opponent, I really hate multiplayer gaming over the net. Too full of abusive little morons who do nothing but arse around to spoil it.
Look at PGR3, for example, all folk did in that was deliberately crash into other folk to turn them, rather than try to outdrive them.
Saints Row was full of little ‘wiggas’ who thought they were gangsta, and were probably uniformly 13 years old.
I played GoW a few times and got annoyed because every time I shot someone, I’d get a ranting ‘You stole my kill you prick! All kills are mine!’ piece of crap spouted in my ear.
Admittedly GoW co-op was fun, but only with someone I knew. I tried to play it with a random Live person and it was garbage.
Multiplayer should be between friends, not strangers, imo.
I was kind of agreeing with what you just said. It’s the lack of co-op I’m not happy with, co-op I would play with a friend, not a random stranger. That’s why I said I didn’t care about a lack of “multiplayer deathmatch.”
I like single player games, but for me, co-op is always better. I still loved Bioshock (played through it twice), but I honestly believe it would have been more fun, just like any other single player game, had it been cooperative.
You live in a very shallow world if you think Oblivion is the best game or Mass Effect. Oblivion was good when there was nothing else out there and mass effect was ok but the combat system was broke. Play Call of Duty 4 or Rainbow Six Vegas 2 or GEARS OR WAR wtf….probably wondering why I didn’t mention Halo 3….well thats because Halo 3 isn’t worth mentioning -_- Just waitin till GTA IV…
haha …”or war?” i like that Gears or War…I find it mildly entertaining killing 13 year olds.. haha but thats just me..
