HD-DVD player gets an update

Cue the hilarious jokes about updates for Betamax and other dead formats, but Microsoft are continuing to support those silly loyal enough to keep hold of their HD-DVD player in the form of an Xbox Live update that adds two rather important things.

Courtesy of Major Nelson:

  • Compatibility improvements with certain titles
  • Additional support for network features

Should you not have access to Xbox Live, you can head on over to Xbox.com to download the update to a disc and work from there. Whether or not this patch will be greatly received no-one knows, but it’s nice to see Microsoft making the effort.

I do not think its silly to keep something you paid for, use and enjoy. So I for one am glad for the update.

All my my friends that bought the HDDVD stuff sold it already. LOL. Thank god I waited. I’m hoping to get a Blu-Ray player this year. Hopefully MS comes out with a BR add on but by then I might have a dedicated BR player or a PS3.

ps3 = a nice cheap BR player

Comment by Steve Perry on 2008-04-09 22:44:11 | Reply

Cheap? are you mental?

Comment by o Pizzle o on 2008-04-10 01:32:47 | Reply

He’s right. I barely use my PS3 for gaming. Cheapest BluRay Player ever lol. Most non PS3 players are atleast 499 and up. So at 399 you get a BR player, gaming console and a Spider Man 3 movie (if you really wanna count that as a bonus or not, i’ll leave that to you)

I’m pretty sure sony released a blu-ray player that was only like 200 bucks. I don’t remember the price too well, but I know it was cheaper than the PS3’s.

Comment by o Pizzle o on 2008-04-11 13:44:30 | Reply

$200?! lol man, DVD players weren’t even that cheap at this point, when they first came out. I have yet to see anything in store or advertised that’s cheaper then the PS3 as a BR player

Comment by Lone Goat on 2008-04-11 22:37:25 | Reply

i forgot about the $200 one i heard about at best buy. but at launch.. Ps3 was the cheapest BR player on the market.. and it was for quite awhile. till i’d say 2-3 months ago.

ps3 = future in gaming

Let’s face it George, it’s not much of gaming platform in the present, so it’s only hope is in the future… as in when it finally gets a couple of decent exclusive games.

PS3 - it’s whole life is ahead of it… which in this case is definitely not a good thing.

Comment by mtbjunkie on 2008-04-10 01:36:23 | Reply

PS3’s significance will start and end with Grand Turismo 5 Prologue. Not worth $300 for a driving game.

Comment by EUPHOR1C on 2008-04-10 03:19:41 | Reply

Yeah when the PS3 actually has any good games.

Nice. I’m actually buying an HD-DVD player. They are the price of a movie now. I want Planet Earth in HD, can get both the player and box set for $60. Blu Ray I doubt will survive anyways owners of either player are going to have a dead format.

Comment by Ali on 2008-04-10 16:00:04 | Reply

$60 for an HD-DVD Player and Planet Earth boxset - where from? I’ve got the player but waiting for PE to drop in price so I can bag it as it looks like one of the best ever titles in HD.

PS: Sorry to go a little O/T but I really want Planet Earth at a bargain price!

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-11 16:45:45 | Reply

I just saw Planet Earth buy it now on Ebay for $32 yesterday. I can’t think of a better title to show off HD to people. I watched it in HD originally on cable definitely a keeper on hd-dvd.

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-11 19:08:34 | Reply

There’s a ton of them on there right now all of them under $30 on current bids.

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-11 19:15:27 | Reply

Amazon has it for $44.99 too:
http://www.amazon.com/Pla...AJW/ref=tag_tdp_sv_edpp_i

I just picked up a player for $30 off Ebay with a couple movies. Planet Earth, Matrix trilogy, and few other other movies are next. I noticed most of the movies selling on Ebay are going for less than $5 too. I’ve also got that HD DVD emulator software from MS have to see if that proves useful in the future.

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-14 21:16:21 | Reply

Keep watching Ebay they are really going cheap. I just picked up a brand new copy of Planet Earth for $15. Puts me at $45 for the 360 HD-DVD player and Planet Earth 5 HD-DVD box set.

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-18 20:03:58 | Reply

Alright Ali without combing Ebay here’s the absolute best deal I’ve seen for Planet Earth HD-DVD. The Discovery Channel store is selling it for $29.99 with free shipping. Enter EML2008 for the coupon code and you’ll get $5 off. So $24.99 with free shipping for the box set. Hard to beat that one.

What so you think everyones just gonna go “fuck it, i dont want high def movies, Fuck HDDVD, fuck blu ray, i’ll just stick to my DVDs” Yeah.. Sure… Just like everyone stuck to cassets… And how we’re all still playing our megadrives cause the graphics are just siiiiiiiiick…

Comment by mass9 on 2008-04-10 15:09:40 | Reply

I’d say its because of torrents.

Free > high def in most people’s eye’s.

PS3 may = hd movies, but the 360 = gaming, hardcore gaming, with the best players, the best hardware, and the best online structure. You want to watch fucking movies and not play games? buy a ps3, you want gaming, you want gaming with the best online competition in the world…Get a 360

Comment by tony on 2008-04-10 02:06:43 | Reply

funny how the turd sony fans are rejoicing in the ONE thing the ps3 has finally delivered, cause god forbid it actually be better in the gaming aspect. The 360 has completely pounded it in every single area but one, now they come out of the woodworks. Face it, the 360 crushes the ps3 in games, graphics, online, and not to mention movie and tv downloads, with netflix coming!

Comment by StrayBezza on 2008-04-10 08:36:31 | Reply

Stop talking bollocks the lot of you. I have both PS3 and 360 (both from launch) and they each bring a great experience to the gaming table. Yes, Live is better than PSN but believe me Sony are catching up in that respect. 360 does not “crush” 360 in terms of graphics or vice versa. PS3 has wowed me with titles like Uncharted, Ratchet, GT5p etc (in fact R6V2 looks better on Ps3, admittedly not really a challenge) and 360 has some awesome titles too…..to me it just seems like anyone who bashes the PS3 at any given chance either hasn’t spent much time with one or can’t fucking afford one. Just get on with gaming etc - they are both great consoles….this fucking console war is perpetuated by the press. The amount of time I have read about an ‘inferior version of this game’ only to play them and discover you need a microscope and bionic fucking eyes to spot any difference is beyond me…jesus….any rant over.

Also - Tony - just out of interest how do you draw the conclusion that XBox live “has the best players”? In my experience there are wankers and winners alike on both setups….as for better hardware???? Still love the 360 tho (despite being on my fourth goddamnit!!)

It’s a pity that when BD won the format war all HD-DVD players self destructed and no longer play discs…… Oh wait, thats right they still work.

You can pick up an HD-DVD player for next to nothing now. All the discs are selling for pennies and in some cases bundled with the players. I WILL be getting a PS3 at some point for BD, but as a short term cheap HD source the HD-DVD players are a bargain.

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-11 18:46:08 | Reply

I just picked up an Xbox 360 HD-DVD player with King Kong and Transformers off Ebay for $30. I just can’t pass it up. Pick up Planet Earth and some other HD discs I want and it’s worth it to me. Plus I can plug the player into my laptop and take it on the road with me.

Increasingly, the Blu-ray performance of the PS3 doesn’t really stand up to videophile scrutiny.” Do you understand what videophile means? It’s for the hardcores of all hardcores for anything video, the difference between a PS3 BR player and a stand alone is so small you’re gonna have to sit about 3 inches away from the screen to notice the difference. I have Shoot’em Up and it plays fine as a fast paced action movie

You must have a small HDTV then. what 15-20 inch range?

Comment by mark on 2008-04-11 18:09:59 | Reply

As soon as it was clear that HDDVD was dead, I went out and got a PS3, only for the blu-ray player, I will be using the Xbox now only for gaming. :)

Comment by Worms on 2008-04-18 17:46:47 | Reply

I got my 360 HD-DVD from Ebay yesterday. Played around with the Transformers extras, the web enabled HUD while watching the movie, etc. I’m pretty impressed. Too bad it’s a dead format but for $30 for the player with 2 movies I couldn’t pass it up. There’s quite a few movies I want now on HD-DVD and most of them are less than $10 now.

The universal remote will be nice for playing music and vids off the network instead of the controller too.
