At the recent Midway Gamers’ Day in Las Vegas, Midway shocked the public by announcing Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, a dream-come-true game that will allow players to side with brutal Mortal Kombat fighters and take on Batman and the likes from the rich DC universe, and vice-versa. If that’s not surprising enough, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is to be the first game in the Mortal Kombat series not to feature any of the trademark gore and (gasp!) sick fatalities that the franchise is so renowned for.

Gone are the sanguinary fatalities that have been associated with the Mortal Kombat name since the franchise’s very beginning, and in their place are balmy finishers that have yet to be revealed. The reason given for the massive change that will surely entice a plethora of flame wars and petitions was that fatalities would lead to undesired out-of-character situations.

Sub-Zero and Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat corner and Superman and Batman from the DC corner are the fighters confirmed to be featured in the game thus far, with more to be unveiled in the coming months. Midway also announced two new fighting mechanics – Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat. Whereas the former will add another dimension to the multi-tiered environments by giving the player a chance to unleash a few combos while falling to lower stages, the latter will have the camera close in on the action and let the aggressor unload a few punches while the defender will have the option to counter the incoming blows.
