Being the underdog for the last two months in US retail sales was a bitter pill to swallow for Microsoft, however, that has now changed for the better. March NPD data recently showed that sales numbers are now back on Xbox 360’s side, as the console managed to outsell Sony’s Playstation 3 by 5000 units. It’s not a big number, especially when compared to Nintendo’s 720,000 Wii consoles sold during the same period, but in the 360 vs. PS3 battle every little victory counts.

The victory in Europe was even sweeter, since the 360 sales have more than doubled, claimed Microsoft. Chris Lewis, VP of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe, didn’t hesitate to praise the 360’s performance in Europe to the skies:

“Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe.

The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers.”

Microsoft also grabbed the opportunity to let everybody know that consumers think of the 360 as the “chosen place” for the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV.

“Whether it’s the results of online polls or data from pre-sells, consumers have made it clear that the benefits of Xbox Live and exclusive access to GTA IV episodic content are making Xbox 360 the chosen place to play GTA IV.”

With Microsoft claiming that its marketing push for the 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV equals that of Halo 3 last year, not to mention a line-up of exclusive games that is not to be sneezed at, it looks like things can only get better for the white console from here onwards.
