MS patent application reveals new motion sensing controller
A recently uncovered patent application, filed back in 2006 by Microsoft, has unveiled what Gates and company have been doing in regards to motion sensing control. The gadget is described as a “computer pointing device” although the application also states that it can double as a game controller.
From the application
Described is a technology by which a computer pointing device (generally a mouse but alternatively a game controller or remote control device) may be worn on the hand and operated without needing to contact a mousing surface. Gyroscopic-based sensors convert the wearer’s hand and wrist movements to signals which are sent to a host computing device such as a conventional personal computer, a gaming console, an electronic appliance, and so forth. The data received from the pointing device may be used to move a cursor or the like, and other received data may correspond to left and right mouse clicks, scrolling operations, and so forth. A user-controlled enable switch/sensor selectively activates or deactivates the pointing device so that only intended movements result in data transmission. Gestures may also be sensed and used to trigger defined functions.
Essentially the device combines the functionality of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk into one wearable controller. TeamXbox has some inside info on the device and describe it being similar to a pistol grip. There’s no word yet as to any planned commercial deployment of the device, but considering Microsoft’s push for adding computers to entertainment centers, the device would be a natural replacement for a mouse/remote control. Alternatively, could Microsoft embrace motion control with the 360’s eventual successor?

wow - would be so cool for fps on 360! im for it if it ever comes out!
looks weird…
its a slide on grip… not really weird… and a lot less likely to fly out of your hand into the plasma
After all the hiding it had to be something more than just a wireless controller.
I’ve been a long time fan of Nintendo and all, but clearly MS and Sony are going to expand their motion sensing capabilities in the future. And as much as I approve of Nintendo turning into a family console, I wish they’d just turn into a game developer and allow MS/Sony to bring big names like Mario/Zelda/Metroid to the 360 and PS3, so I could get the best of both worlds.
lame
yeah got agree with tfj56, i know the wii is selling like hotcakes, but the whole motion sensor thing is just not accurate enough for me yet, and until its as accurate as a mouse or game controller count me out… i’d rather use my perfect comfortable 360 controllers over a wii mote anyday personally
i wonder if it will be as reliable as their consoles …….cough cough
If I wanted to jump about like a tit playing games, I’d be in my local arcade jumping on pads to Dance Dance Revolution. However, I much prefer to relax with my perfectly designed 360 controller sitting in my hand with a glass of Jack Daniels and Coke by my side playing games with perfect control. Keep motion sensors and other such gimmicks for the kiddie consoles. Keep 360 as an adult console and gimmick free please!!!
Technically tits don’t jump, they bounce. But i get what you are saying.
lmao
so it looks like microsoft is trying to evolve the mouse…i wonder if theyll release it with their new os next year.
I’d get it as a mouse, but game controller? Well won’t hurt to try.
