Guitar Hero IV to be more like Rock Band

When Activision outlined its plans for 2008 back in February and revealed that as many as three new iterations are in the pipeline, with two of them being Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero IV, it begged the question of how the company intends to prevent the franchise, which is already starting to lose its shine, from growing stale. Courtesy of the May issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine, we now know Activision’s answer to EA’s Rock Band – add new instruments!

In the latest issue of the magazine, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick shared what the company has in mind to freshen up the Guitar Hero experience:

“It’s not just about guitars. We’ll include a lot of other instruments, vocals. It will help us expand internationally. It’s the first game we’ve had in which we can use local content and local bands.”

Guitar will soon get new friends

To face up to EA’s masterpiece, that is Rock Band, Activision will basically assume the role of a copycat and introduce new instruments to the Guitar Hero series. Vocals are already there, a drum peripheral is a no-brainer, but what about other instruments? Will Guitar Hero IV or the yet-to-be-revealed Guitar Hero iteration make use of the DJ Hero trademark? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Wow Neversoft. Just Wow.

There was me thinking you couldn’t get even worse as a game producer.

It will support virtual trombones, trumpets, and saxs and only have ska music.

Wow, who didn’t see that coming. I thought they were just gonna stick to their guns, you know. Sounds like a rip-off already.

i’d prefer they just release some decent guitar songs. could they release a guitar hero 1 song pack for 360 dlc perhaps?

Is anyone here shocked and or surprised by this announcement ?

I’m not… I had a hunch they would go down this road after the popularity of Rock Band in the States… I do believe that will be the ONLY place its popular though as if you live in “Yurop” you’ll have to mortgage your house in order to afford all the components.

i figured it too but i hoped they wouldnt as… well… as said in the post i made above its frigging guitar hero, its name isnt even relative to a band… what are they gonna do rename it to Band Hero?

lol’d @ yurop.

I’m totally going to rip that off. Thanks!

Ach, and why not, you spell most other things wrong in America anyway.

He’s Canadian. They still use some of your funky pointless spelling.

Apologies to Mass then, that must be like someone calling me English, and I know I fucking hate that.

There is enough room in the marketplace for both games to exist as-is. The GH franchise should have stuck to what they have been doing, concentrating on that one instrument. The game is a lot more fun from start to finish because all songs are picked for their guitar work. There are many songs in Rock Band that are simply lame on a given instrument because the others may make up for it.

Also the guitar IMO is more beginner friendly than drums, and more fun to play solo that vocals. Its a terrifically balanced instrument in the games they aren’t necessarily missing much by sticking with it. Where they need to improve is treating their customers. We want DLC, we want it at a reasonable price and we want a lot of it. We also want to be able to use our guitars on any guitar themed game. The Les Paul is leaps ahead of the Strat.

have to agree it was more … single player oriented but it was solid at it… rock band was a cool party game… and even chicks love it… but GH leaving its roots as a solid guitar game with a strong single player experience for a multiplayer band experience seems… off to me.

Too bad GH had the bands no one knew of, right?

On another note, this is stupid. For one, RB is only good as a multiplayer experience. It dumbed down the guitar for the sake of other instruments, so I went to GH for the single player. What the hell am I to do now? Thank you, Harmonix and Neversoft, for ruining one of the best franchises ever.

wow…not one person was excited about this. dont blame you guys, im pissed too. what i think they should do to keep the franchise strong is not release new games so fast and focus on improving the dlc for the current games.
