GTA IV freezing select consoles
Reports have been coming that a minority of unlucky gamers are having problems with GTA IV. The game freezes entirely after going through the lengthy opening cinematic. As of now, the problem is affecting both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, and thanks to some skulduggery by sleuths over at Kotaku we know that Rockstar is aware of the problem.
According to the tech support representative that spoke to Kotaku, Rockstar has no idea what’s causing some systems to lock up. The freeze is affecting some of the 60 GB models of the PS3 and some 360s. What’s even worse for those afflicted by the freeze, since they have no idea what’s causing it, Rockstar has no idea when a fix will be available. Let’s all set our controllers down for a moment and say a prayer for our comrades who cannot join us in Liberty City. They will be missed.

Mine has frozen twice.
The only time it has happened to me is when I drive a burning, ready to explode car into the goal checkpoint. I can’t move, bring up the blade or anything. Which was annoying because I had to start this mission over. At least it has autosave after every mission you complete. I have the 175W Elite, so … wtf?

People who are experiencing this proble try this take out ANY disc from your 360 and close the tray. Then go the System blade and select Memory, highlight your Hard Drive and press Y. Then press this combination X,X,LB,RB,X,X if a menu comes up to the right, you did it right and select Yes. After its finished press B and then A to go into your Hard Drive and Select Games find GTA IV highlight it and press Y then select Delete. After deleted turn off your 360 and turn it back on pop in GTA IV and try it, it should work.
I forgot to say that meathod will delete your Game progress so do it if only necessary.
it deletes game auto updates and the system cache, it does NOT delete game saves.
I know I meant to say it doing this procedure WILL delete your GTA IV gamesave

Mine has only froze once, prob because of how long i was playing.
mine keeps freezing either right after it autosaves or just beofre i finish a mission.
Mine froze in online multiplayer when I did a handbrake turn in the very last second of the game, in cinematic mode!!! But other than that, its fine…
Mine seems to freeze at random points, once as I was just coming up the hill from teh docks at the start, once as I entered the clothes shop and once as I crashed my car which left the controller vibrating constantly til I switched the Box off.
I took my disk back and got it swapped for another copy and that does the same, very frustrating.

^^^^tell me about it. tried this game at a friends and its not that great. the online isnt all that good and franktly the graphics are not that good. halos more my type of game…graphics are better and online is top notch. thumbs WAY down for me

I agree with melikesgahlo2. A buddy of mine came over and let me try it out and it wasn’t really worth the cash to me. It freezes up a lot because it wasn’t made good, the graphics looked like they were from the original XBox at best, and the game has the same fill as past games with no originality. Maybe EA has already secretly bought this game, which is why it sucks because they make shitty games. Bungie knows how to make a real man’s game. Halo has way better graphics and better multiplayer. Me and my bro have always wanted to gangbang a chick and thought we’d get the opportunity to in multiplayer, but they don’t even have hookers in the multiplayer. Blue balls man….. Blue balls….

Anyway, the GTA well worth the buy though I was surprised that a few hours of gameplay and I already covered 12% of the game. Lame! I was seriously hoping for like 5% as what it felt like. But whatever, I guess for the size and detail, they had to make some sacrifice.

yes, it is important to note that some people are having random issues (as with most new games), but is there not something else that should be said about this game? i think just posting an article about its release would have been appropriate yesterday, but there must something you guys want to say besides “GTA IV freezing select consoles”.
this game is fucking groundbreaking. if they are able to get some truly episodic content for liberty city, this game could be a truly vivid glimpse into the future of gaming.
but yes, i agree with most of the people on this comment board. this game is an experience every 360 owner should go through, and i have not one ounce of disappointment. i hope everyone finds something to enjoy in this game. i have a feeling it is possible.

I’m sorry, but who are these people who hate Rockstar? Rockstar are one THE best software houses around. What reason could you have to hate them? Bully’s freezing issues perhaps? Which were dealt with within two weeks? And developed by an entirely different department from GTA IV.

i am just looking for a place to sing the praises for a game that is going to entertain me for hundreds and hundreds of hours. any place. an article that says “i played gta and liked it,” would be fine. anything besides “gta is broke.” as a community, we need a place to note some of the positive shit in this game, and the forums are a shit storm of marshmallow fluff. i feel sad just thinking about them. maybe that’s just cause i know mass9 is in there.

Yet to have a single issue with mine on a 360 Falcon unit. So far it’s been pretty solid.
so far so good here. I played for 8+ hours yesterday and only one freeze up in multi player but it was at a loading screen so I think the servers were to blame.

So far i’ve not had any problems even though my dvd drive is on the way out. I’ll just keep playing till it sets on fire or something.
But i have to say i think it’s easily one of the best games ever, but maybe not to everyones taste. Feel sorry for you tucky, 3mins of playing before it crashes? thats not even enough time to find a ho and f*ck her. Shame.
What’s probably the case is that the engine pushes the 360 (and the PS3) to the limit which is fine for most machines but the ones that are dying can’t handle it… Oblivion did the same thing in it’s days.
It appears that there are zero problems at all on ps3’s with hardware backwards compatibility (all the “old” systems). ALL the newer systems (EU 60G, 40G, 80G etc.) have problems with freezes, microfreezes texture/object popups,and crashes.
I don’t hate Rockstar, but I’ve never cared for the GTA games. I may check this one out used, in a few months.
For now, I’m busy with other interests. My 360 hasn’t been on for about 6 weeks.

hey my game retailer was experiencing a problem with it being blurry on his ps3 and asked me about it cos i have the 360 version but it looks completely clean on mine does anyone else have this problem on ps3? He’s playing it on a sony bravia xd 2 tv.
I’ve had no problems with GTA IV on my 360. I’ve played for countless hours and no issues thus far……….knock on wood.

I rented GTA4 from BB on Tuesday, put it in my 360 and the game froze during the load screen, tried to re-boot the 360, and got the three rings of death. Waiting for my shipping box now.
Havnt had a single freeze, or drop in fps. Beautiful visuals with great cinematics. I am usually not impressed with cenematics, but its only half a game if they are skipped. Reminds me of Oblivion, on a Scooby snack, (Heroin and cocaine). If you enjoyed ANY of the previous GTA this will fill the free roam void the FPS genre has dominated on the 360.
COD4 still pulls at me though.
