First Gears of War 2 gameplay footage released

If you’ve been following news on Game Trailers or Major Nelson, then you’re probably aware that yesterday night the first gameplay trailer of the Xbox 360 exclusive third-person shooter, Gears of War 2, was premiered on Game Trailers TV. For everyone who missed it, we’ve embedded the trailer after the jump. Want to see it in sweet High-Definition? Then head over to the Marketplace for a 147.44 MB download under the Game Videos section.

The trailer opens up with Cliffy B giving a short introduction to what you’re about to see, followed by the first glimpse at the new COG trucks called Derricks which are capable of drilling holes into the underground layers of the Locust. Next, we witness a Locust assault, with spider-like monsters called Nemacyst Mortars crashing into the grind lifts, the Reavers flying side-by-side with the Derrick, and an ugly Brumak joining the party later on.

On the gameplay side of things, two new weapons are shown – the Gorgon burst pistol and a two-handed semi-automatic assault rifle. A chainsaw duel is also demonstrated, where hitting the B button the fastest is the way to win the duel. Last but not least, Marcus Fenix shows off the ability to use enemies as shields, complete with a wrenching neck-breaker once the stink of Locust blood becomes unbearable.

Let us know what you think of the first GoW 2 footage in the comments below.

That looks like it will be a ton of fun to play with a friend. I’m excited.

plz be 4-player coop, and more then 4on4 online & is some FFA to much to ask for?

I don’t think so :)

60fps locked gameplay so far thats exciting enough….

So far i’ve seen a few people praying already, especially for chainsaw battles online, and human shields online that would be amazing.

If they can lock that up, as well as the 4 player coop … coop online with guest support… i’ll be estatic….

but most of all i’m really praying we see 12 or 16 player online gameplay, with the same style games as say cod4 … (modes)… and a persistent online leveling system would also be wicked

looks like the second half of what they should have included in the first campaign.

Comment by mass9 on 2008-05-11 22:36:21 | Reply

almost as if its GOW2 or something, eh?

LOL i always laugh when people say stupid sh*t like “looks like the continuation of #1″ … wow really… you mean #2 comes after #1? i never knew….

btw for those that dont realize, thats 40-80 onscreen locusts and brumacks… not to mention playing at 60fps LOCKED, according to several sites.

fuk killzone2

You need to drastically improve the multiplayer for this second GoW. Put a ranking system like H3 together with the fluidness and appeal like CoD4 and you’ll have the game of the season/year, no doubt. Good luck.

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-05-11 03:01:15 | Reply

Looks just like the first one.. And that’s a bad thing. The fire/explosion looked horrible, and the graphics still have the bland, grey/brown shade to them. Disappointing.

Comment by H34RT 4TT4CK on 2008-05-11 03:41:37 | Reply

The grey/brown shade is the way the game is meant to look, it’s supposed to denote a feeling of depressing and hard times frought with war and death.

If anything, I’m glad it follows in the footsteps of the first if maybe with bigger footprints now.

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-05-11 04:53:33 | Reply

Haha, GoW1 still holds its own graphically against any game out today.

Well, I still haven’t bought the first one … but it does looks like more of the same.

This demo looks sick and anybody that doesn’t give it props are riding on the dicks of Sony because they don’t have a game on their system as sweet as this. Haters, why don’t you program a better game or shut the fuck up and don’t buy it. Buy Metal Gear either way it’s gonna sell and sell big

Comment by StrayBezza on 2008-05-12 18:32:52 | Reply

Mmm…I have both PS3 and 360….and I love both systems. However GOW bored the piss out of me and I didn’t rate the graphics either (technically I can see the merit) but its all a matter of personal opinion I guess….Metal Gear can fuck off as well…tedious cack.

Comment by EUPHOR1C on 2008-05-11 14:25:25 | Reply

First game was not all that (not bad,but nothing to go down in the history of gaming) online was boring, and single player campaign was too short. Now that’s “the truth” I hope Epic has more to offer this time around.

actually epic already said that the first one was more of a taste… or introduction to the system and that #2 would be the real depth of the single player story

i just hope they up the ante on the multiplayer, with proper leveling like cod4 and more gamemodes, not to mention a solid 12-16 player game modes would be great and make it perfect.

Proper leveling Like COD4 … HA!

I own an Xbox, thanks. Currently playing GTA4. And last time I checked, I was able to say whatever the fuck I wanted to. So, don’t waste your breathe and tell me, or any other hater to shut the fuck up. I have every right to bash this series when the first game was damn near promised to be the far thing ever, and taht was far from correct. And as far as the PS3 owners go? I’m sure they don’t care about bullshit like this. They have GTA4 as well, and then MGS4, which you mentioned.

Yea, sooo if you want to make sense next time you reply to someone, that would be great…

“the far thing ever,” are you serious? How can you be that dumb? I’m not even mad, I’m just impressed.

If they take out the multiplayer to improve/lengthen the single player/co-op, I wouldn’t miss a thing.

Unless they greatly improved on the Multiplayer because the current play was too constricting for me.

K, let me correct myself. I meant to say “promised to be the best thing ever, and it was far from that”. Kinda’ hard to type with constant pop-ups, but whatever. If we’re going to get our panties in a wad over a simple mistake, let me pont something out on your end.

“Yea, sooo if you want to make sense next time you reply to someone, that would be great…”

That’s one horrible way of wording a sentence in which you’re trying to tell me to make sense. I had to read it twice to understand what the fuck you were saying.

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-05-12 01:03:10 | Reply

And as far as being impressed goes, I’m impressed that you failed to realise what I meant in the first place. It was really quite simple.

I’m always constantly amazed by people who claim that a game being short makes it a bad game. It’s the quality of the experience that counts and Gears of War was an awesome game, especially playing with a friend.

The online was great also, the only drawbacks being the 4 vs 4 thing (should have been at least 6 on 6, or 8 on 8 preferrably) and the lack of any decent deathmatch game type.

These flaws, in my opinion, were minor. It’s still an awesome game and a hell of a great graphical achievement. This time round, they seem to have stepped up the action side of things and added a lot of new ideas.

I for one am really looking forward to GOW2 as I had such a blast playing the first one and it was tremendous value for money. For the quality of the experience not the quantity in terms of how long it lasted.

The fucking gameplay whiners are the same ones who want to run and gun, and just hop, and strafe like all the other shooters. This game is tactical, the cover system, the working together to win the 4 on 4 battles. I could give a shit care less about 50 on 50 battles, make it tight, make it complicated in how you flank, and hold, be able to use cover like in real life, and you get an amazing game, plus sick graphics. Every single guy that I’ve heard whine about the gameplay cant stand to have the patience to work together, hold ground, advance, then flank and choke out the other team. Gears actually does this better than ghost recon, and call of duty to this day. People just get all bent out of shape if they cant choose between 50 weapons, outfits, and running and gunning. Fuck the clowns, Gears is the gamers game, it’s the tactical game that people overlook.

Well said! Gears FTW!!

Better than Ghost Recon, but not R6.

Not nearly as many pricks on that game, either.

No use playing a tactical game when nobody in matchmaking actually gives a shit.

I loved the multiplayer, it was polished and really well designed. You had to work as a team for success, one of the few games that actually encouraged that. The campaign was also great fun, particularly with a friend online. Now I hope they take it up a notch without diverging too much from the original, which this trailer seems to show. Hopefully though it won’t all be big battles, there will still be tactical close quarter combat.

If you want to call that a massive fuck-up, by all means.. Go ahead. But you really can’t relate that to my life, as you know nothing about me. If you’re getting this worked up over the fact that I dislike your beloved game, you really have no room to talk as far as anything like that goes.

Sorry, but Gears multiplayer was far from polished. I enjoyed it but the amount of glitches were almost imbearabale.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2008-05-12 14:21:28 | Reply

If people chose to exploit them… which myself and my friends did not.

Fair enough, ranked matches were often annoying because of the sniper rifle/hammer of dawn/boom shot noobs and the chainsaw glitchers and the “run underneath the map” glitchers, but bear in mind these are people, not the game itself. The gameplay was still well designed and very exciting to play when you’re playing with people who aren’t assholes.

And they released multiple patches to gradually sort out all the exploits so fair play to Epic for doing so.

Comment by Ghost on 2008-05-12 16:02:08 | Reply

Guessing it’s the first game by Epic you have played.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2008-05-13 14:27:02 | Reply

No it isn’t. I’m not talking about other games by Epic here. I’m talking about Gears. It’s called relevance. Perhaps you should try it?

Comment by Veritas on 2008-05-14 09:19:31 | Reply

I don’t think that was a reply to you, looking at the logic of the reply tree here.

ya it was a solid multiplayer but it was lacking depth…

the reason cod4 is so great is the large longterm online task to gain weapons and perks etc…… in cod4 and other games thats missing and thats why many loose interest quickly… gears2 should really add something like that…

not to mention my earlier request for….

1. 12-16 player matches (even in only certain modes)
2. More gameplay modes
3. More weapons
4. Ability to perform all offline moves online… meat shield, chainsaw battle, COVER
5. 4 player COOP
6. Local multiplayer of some sort
7. Local Coop (4 player? i doubt it but would be cool for my plasma)
8. Split Screen Xbox Live guest support! You’d be surprised how many people really love tha tlike me and my brother-in-law

COD4’s leveling system is WHACK! It isn’t leveling, it isn’t rankings … it’s just a trick they used ot make people play for a long time before they got the weapons they wanted. To me, that is stupid. If I wanted to do that, I would play an RPG.

Comment by Lone Goat on 2008-05-13 13:50:32 | Reply

ummm I’m guessing u didn’t like it. b/c u ranked up slow as hell? that’s why i love it.. u can’t ride on the backs of teammates and friends.. all your XP u gain.. u earned yourself

I played it quite a lot and didn’t experience too much glitching. Then again, I did play mainly in the evenings GMT, so very few Americans.

Comment by Tyler on 2008-05-13 03:55:33 | Reply

I played Gears online with people, and friends. No glitching, and even without the options of other games out, it was the best tactical, work together game on the market. Simply put, without any glitching the game is fantastic. I have my live list full, and I still play off an on almost two years later because it has that IT, that other games don’t have but those other games give you some outfits, or give you some other guns that are worthless. I don’t know about you, but the people that run and gun are the same fucking whiners that don’t like this game. Go play halo you hopping, strafing no talent fucks!

Comment by Veritas on 2008-05-14 09:22:55 | Reply

Objectively, it takes more talent to no-scope whil e strafing and jumping than to kill someone with blind fire (especially when there’s a laser guide like on the bow).

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-05-15 04:43:18 | Reply

The torque bow doesn’t have a laser guide when blindfiring…

Comment by Ryan on 2008-05-13 03:57:10 | Reply

Simply put, if both Cod and Gears came out at the same time. I’d go with Gears hand down, just because of the actual tactics you have to use…Not only that, the mess you make taking people out is second to none! rihhhhhhhhh nih nih nih nih! ha ha

Comment by Major on 2008-05-13 14:29:11 | Reply

I agree, COD4 is far less tactical, its more of a fast twitch shooter

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-05-13 21:55:12 | Reply

And Gear isn’t a twitch shooter? If you want to play something tactical, this isn’t the game.

Comment by Lone Goat on 2008-05-14 03:22:48 | Reply

More Tactical then COD4 yes.. but not a “Tactical” game, not a GRAW. However i still love both GOW & COD4.

Comment by will on 2008-05-14 03:30:19 | Reply

Yes it is tactical, you can run and gun, you can just run in. You have to hold, flank, clear areas before you move on in multiplayer, you work together. That is being tactical, the best teams in Gears won, not the best players. The best player may have had a ton of kills, but his team always lost.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-05-14 09:24:50 | Reply

Who were you playing with? I very rarely saw those kinds of tactics. Most of the time, people just ran for the most powerful weapon and then fucked about strafing or shottying people.

Comment by will on 2008-05-14 03:31:11 | Reply

I meant you CAN’T run and gun, you CAN’T just run in.
