Guitar Hero IV details emerge

Next month’s Game Informer is spilling the beans on Guitar Hero IV, and a few details have emerged. Not only will Neversoft try to beat Rock Band by adding more instruments, there’s going to be a bigger focus on customization and content creation as well.

As mentioned before, more instruments are being added. Guitar Hero IV will feature a guitar, a bass, drums, and vocals. The game will also add much more customization than previous outings, not only will you be able to create your own character, you’ll be able to create your own guitars and drums. Neversoft is also adding content creation by allowing users to create their own songs. User created tracks will be limited however, vocals won’t be available due to storage space and possible copyright issues. Created tracks can be uploaded to GH Tunes where they can be downloaded by other players. Initially, players will be limited to 5 uploads but the cap can be raised if fellow players like your songs and rate them high enough. The song sharing mode will be available in all versions of the game although the Wii and PS2 outings will see a watered down version of the feature.

Another detail from the article that is sure to please fans is that Guitar Hero IV will feature master tracks for all songs in the game. Neversoft was tight lipped in regards to songs that would appear on the game for fear of seeing them snatched up by Harmonix, but they did confirm four bands that would make an appearance, Van Halen, The Eagles, Linkin Park and Sublime. GI also saw see through notes and were told that it was a new input mechanic that Neversoft was trying to patent. Red Octane has also designed a new guitar that will “impact the way you play GH in the future”. Whether the game will be able to out do Rock Band won’t be known for some time, but it’s certainly going to be an interesting year for fans of the series.

One set of instruments in my living room is enough. Rockband FTW!

Here hoping that the GH4 guitar will be full sized! Have they checked the average age of the people that play these games? Is it 12? NO! So don’t give us toys that only a 12 year old has short enough arms to comfortably use for hours!

GH is a freaking joke now. Can they kick that horse any harder?

It’s dead as a doornail. The reason for making the guitar kid size OwningXylophone is that it’s a KIDS GAME. Just because adults play it doesn’t mean they’re going to facilitate a guitar for them. Have you seen the graphics in the GH games? They’re so childish it’s embarrassing. No adult in his right mind would be caught dead playing this old skool trash. But that’s just my opinion. I’m sure there are lots of adults who can get some enjoyment out of it. Fair play to them, but don’t expect anyone to create a controller that will cater to their whimsy.

1.) The guitar is that small because making them like a real guitar would be more expensive and harder to use for anyone who has never played a real guitar.

2.) Cartoony graphics a children’s game do not make. It saddens me that you think that way, Mano. Rock Band wasn’t much different, either way.

There’s a huge difference between making a game accessible and making a game purely for children, but you seem to have a sort of blindness to it.

I’m not saying cartoony graphics make a kids game. I’m talking primarily about gameplay here. I’m saying look at Boom Boom Rocket. I’m saying look at Thrillville:Off The Rails. Now compare to Guitar Hero. Or Rock Band for that matter.

The gameplay is button presses as they come down the screen like Dance Dance Revolution which you then have to match (yawns loudly). As far as I’m concerned this simplistic kind of gameplay is for kids. I’m not saying adults aren’t allowed to enjoy it, but it’s a childish kind of gameplay that doesn’t offer much depth for me as an adult.

Crackdown is a cartoony game yet I would not say that it is in any way a kids game. GTA3 was very cartoony, but it’s not a kids game. The XNA game, The Dishwasher was also cartoony, but it’s by no means a kids game.

The combination of simplistic gameplay with overtly cartoonish graphics and gimmicky controllers to me spells kids game. Adults may enjoy playing it, but there’s no getting away from it. It’s a kids game whether you like it or not.

Hotel California has to be one of THE most over-rated songs of all time. If it faded out 8 bars after the singing ends, then it might have been okay, but it goes on and on and on and on with a mind numbing self-indulgent guitar solo that totally dilutes any impact the song had in the first place.

The only people who tend to like this song are guitarists in my experience. Or dope fiends.
