Ubisoft: Splinter Cell Conviction is “shaping up nicely”

The fact that Ubisoft’s Xbox 360 exclusive title, Splinter Cell Conviction, was a no-show at this year’s Ubidays just added fuel to the fire and pretty much confirmed the rumours that the game is in for one serious makeover. Taking notice of the suspicions, the team behind the game has crawled out of its hiding hole and updated us on the development status of the next Splinter Cell iteration.

This is the message a community developer posted on the official forums:

Hi guys,

It’s been a while since our last message but we’re happy to say that development of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction is continuing well and the game is shaping up nicely. The team here is very dedicated and focused to making sure that Conviction turns into an amazing experience of Splinter Cell.

There are lots of rumours flying around right now about Conviction’s development status and we can tell you that the gameplay has evolved, similar to what happens in every game’s development process, and you won’t be disappointed. We take your feedback from these forums very seriously and, although we can’t respond to each and every thing people say, we do take these posts into consideration when making the game.

Unfortunately we’re not able to make Ubidays this year but in the forthcoming months we’ll be back in touch to begin showing you this new installment of the Splinter Cell series.

Splinter Cell Conviction Team

It seems the rumours were partially right, since the game is indeed undergoing a series of changes on the gameplay front. The question is how much the gameplay has evolved? Is the new improvisation feature still the biggest draw or has it been replaced by something better and catchier? We’ll see about that when the team is ready to lift the veil on the evolved gameplay sometime in the coming months.

Like I’ve said before, the Splinter Cell team had a Metal Gear type blockbuster when the game first lauched on the XBOX.

Since then, its been mostly down hill except for Chaos Theory. This game started out by pushing the graphics about most titles. That’s not longer the case.

The gameplay and stealth was so much better than MGS, yet they have done little to expand on that. The story has always been weak and got weaker with each game.

Now we have Fisher looking like a bum in DC. They seem to have made some serious changes to the gameplay with hand-to-hand combat but this game doesn’t even look like Splinter Cell.

Guarantee that this game gets delayed until 2009.

That or turns into Condemned 3. Ethan Thomas and Sam Fisher slumming and bumming together. LOL!

they can take as long as they need to make a good game - a bad one will always be bad

well i hope they really do something good with the multiplayer.
I must admit i was once a ps2 fanboy and vowed to never touch an xbox after playing with what seemed like the largest video game controller next to an arcade style…well control lol. but after playing cod2 than playing it online you bastards sucked me in and now realize that i love the 360 better than what i know i would’ve loved the ps3 (not bashing ps3 btw)
anyway so i never played any of the SC except for SC:DA and i loved the multiplayer. at first it was ok but when i fell into a room wit a couple ppl who played together and actually had fun i was sold, i was hooked like crazy. anyway (again) i hear how much better the Chaos theory’s multiplayer was so i really really really really hope they take from DA and multiply what was better in CT and make conviction a helluva bad a$$ multiplayer.
imo thats what will sell it for me, im not to big on singleplayer games like i used to be, online is where i love to be so i hope this is made great.

The SC games have always been great. I think they dropped the ball a bit with Double Agent. Some good ideas in it, but disallowing you from running and crouching in sections of the game made it really tedious. The multiplayer was still a lot of fun though. Great fun with your friends, just playing with bots and pulling them out of windows or breaking their necks!

This one really needs to innovate again, or at least go back to what made Pandora Tomorrow or Chaos Theory great.
