The Force in Soul Calibur IV strengthens with new character

Namco Bandai’s announcement that Star Wars’ iconic characters Yoda and Darth Vader are to clash their light sabers with the weapons of the rest of the fighting roster in Soul Calibur IV turned more than a few heads back in January. In case the revelation that each one of the two Force-wielding fighters will be exclusive to either the Xbox 360 or PS3 left a bad taste in your mouth, then you’ll be happy to learn that another Star Wars-inspired character will be appearing in next-gen debut of Soul Calibur.

Set to feature in both the 360 and PS3 versions of the game, the Secret Apprentice character from Lucas Arts’ upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is the latest fighter to join the now lengthy Soul Calibur IV lineup. We don’t know about you, but we think this announcement further indicates that the downloadable content that will inevitably follow the game’s launch will add more characters from the Star Wars universe. Wookiee anyone?

Soul Calibur IV will hit retailers in standard and limited editions on July 29th.

“lightsabers against a sword??? that is pretty dumb”

Oh get off yourself…its a game. By your sense of “dumb”, one horizontal swing of Nightmare’s blade should have chopped everyone he fought in half…

you’re dumb

thank you… none got that before.. no really i just thought light sabers just looked cool.. i never thought about how unfair it’d be.

Anyone who knows Star Wars would realize that this is a dumb concept. This franchise has done little since Soul Calibur on the dreamcast which I might say was the best of the series. This is what you get when developers have no creativity left and get lazy.

I’m renting this game and saving my money for a real game.

Why don’t you wait ’til there are further details before making such claims? The devs have said that the story kind of explains that.. Maybe you should save your views until they release info on that aspect.

Oh dear! Masters of Teras Kasi anyone?

Personally as a big Star Wars fan, a fighting game fan and as someone who loved the early Soul Blade / Calibur games. I think this crossover idea is retarded. Why this excites people I don’t know! Soul Calibur IV does not need Star Wars characters.

It’s right up there with the Mortal Kombat / DC Universe fiasco. The people who “green lighted” projects such as these should be publicly flogged.

Hahah now to show how big of a nerd I am… A lightsaber cannot cut through everything. The material vibro swords are made out of cannot be damaged by a lightsaber unless the contact is extended over a period of time. And the swords in soul caliber aren’t just regular swords are they? according to the information i’ve read, the swords from soul caliber have “special” properties. Im going to go rearrange my action figures on my 1:35 scale city i built in my parents basement.

This isn’t the first time there’s been guest characters in this series, but it is the first time guest characters have been from Star Wars.

Agreed, tho I also thought that Link, Heihachi & Spawn we’re also a stupid idea. Link at least is an armed character from a “fantasy” game.

Surely they’d be better creating original characters to extend the franchise than a bunch of “lifted” characters that are only going to appear in one specific incarnation of the game?

Link is no more valid than Vader, surely? After all, Star Wars isn’t real either! :)

I like the idea, but you should have an option to disable them if you want to.

I just hope it’s like SC3 and has a really good create-a-fighter mode. I made a belter of a Sephiroth in the last one :)

This is just a shameless marketing tie-in. The sad thing is it’ll probably sell more units.

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-06-10 01:58:05 | Reply

It’s not shameless marketing, it’s fan service. If you don’t like the fact that guest characters are in, buy the game and play as someone else. Seems that would be the logical choice. Either that, or don’t buy it at all.

Goddamn, people, it’s not a big deal.

Masters of Teras Kasi was a fantastic game!!!

Comment by The_Glovner on 2008-06-10 14:06:50 | Reply

I hope that was sarcasm because it was perhaps the worst game ever made.

It’s a fact, I read it somewhere.
