DRM tool now up and running

From the word go, that is late 2005, Xbox 360 users have had to deal with the pesky digital rights management (DRM) issues, the problem which only got amplified by the unnervingly high failure rate of the console. Starting today, 360 users can kiss the DRM issues goodbye, thanks to the release of the promised content license transfer tool, aka the DRM tool.

For those not in the know, here’s an explanation of what the license transfer tool actually is:

The license transfer tool on Xbox.com lets you consolidate all of your downloaded content licenses to one console. For example, if you downloaded items from Xbox LIVEĀ® Marketplace on one console, then purchased another console later on and downloaded more content to the new one, your content would be licensed to two consoles. This tool lets you download your older content licenses to your new console.

Microsoft has a whole new section dedicated to the DRM problem on Xbox.com which you are advised to check out before proceeding to the actual process of getting rid of the problem. To make things even easier for you, Major Nelson has recorded a video in which he explains the process step by step.

The fact that you can use the tool only once every twelve months most likely won’t go down well with many a 360 user, but hey, at least we have a solution to the problem now! Tell us what you think in the comments below.

I used it last night and it seemed to work fine.
After you use the tool you have to go into your download history and hit download again to all your content.
I haven’t tried to play any of my arcade games without being connected to xbox live to see if it worked but I will tonight.

I don’t know about that for sure. I don’t think it will but you’ll just have to experiment.

Uhm, no. That has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Works very well, even for those xbla titles that you could grab for free for a short period of time.

when you download it again it’s not the same as the first time. It downloads almost instantly!
It took me about 5-7 minutes to re-download all my games and I had 12 games!
