Free DLC for GH III on July 3, GH: Van Halen in the works?

Hard on the heels of last week’s World of Warcraft free download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Activision has announced that this week fans of the game can look forward to another free downloadable song. Another bit of news that concerns the Guitar Hero franchise comes from The Wall Street Journal which hints at the hard rock band Van Halen as a possible band to frontline another Guitar Hero expansion ala Aerosmith and Metallica.

On Thursday, July 3, Activision will make the award-winning “Top Gun Anthem” available for free on the Marketplace as a “special Fourth of July treat.” How kind of them!

First Aerosmith, then Metallica; Van Hallen to follow?

Equally exciting is the high possibility of a Van Halen-centric Guitar Hero iteration coming sometime in the future, since “Activision is in serious discussions with Van Halen about showcasing that band in Guitar Hero,” reports Wall Street Journal. We’ll have more on this as it develops.

I’m so sold on a GH: Van Halen. Despite the fact that I think it’s dumb that they are doing single bands for $60 a crack, I’ve grown up listening to Van Halen.

So what they are doing is selling us the same game over and over only with new songs.

That spells bargain bin for me, no way I’ll pay the full price except maybe for GH: Queen or GH: Johnny Cash :)

If they did GH:Queen, then they are welcome to my PIN number.

Do you buy the same Madden game over and over again? Do you buy the tons of Rock Band songs and spend alot of money for those? What about fighting games? Those haven’t changed in a long time yet they keep selling some how.

The point is, it’s not just new music. For GH:Aerosmith they added new elements (even if they were small) such as the extra bandmate on stage, new interactions and movements between the people on stage. I think the HO:POs are also alot tighter then in GH:3. That could just be me though.

You’re complaining about buying the same thing over and over yet I bet you do it with other franchises and you didn’t think it was the same. I not only like the idea of GH games focused one band but I welcome it with open arms. I absolutly love GH:Aerosmith because they are my favorate band of all time and it’s a whole new pack of songs. When GH:Metallica and hopefully (fingers crossed) GH:Van Halen come out I will definately be buying those. Yes it won’t be the bundle like I did with GH:Aerosmith but I needed a second guitar and I absolutly wanted the Aerosmith faceplate anyway. :)

So keep bringing the single band games (I love the first three choices of bands!).

I think the major problem is that they’re developing and releasing too many games too soon without enough improvements.

They could have used the band aspects as an incentive to get people to buy whatever eventual new GH game comes out (”EXCLUSIVE SONGS FROM METALLICA/AEROSMITH/VAN HALEN/etc.”), but instead they’re releasing whole new games, with new kits, and very little that’s different from the previous iterations. Buying Rock Band tracks isn’t buying the whole game over again, it’s expanding on what’s already there and holding players over until the sequel, which will have a whole list of new features and improvements.

For the record, other games like Madden and the like should be criticized for the same thing. Hell, I’m pretty sure everybody criticizes shooter games for it, and most of those aren’t even in the same franchise.

I guess if enough suckers are going to give Activision $60 every few months for them to crank out another Guitar Hero iteration they’ll keep doing it. I’d rather spend the $60 on Rock Band DLC that I’ll be able to keep playing in Rock Band 2.

It’s not “The Top Gun Anthem” it’s actually “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins.

Source? Every article I’ve seen on this has mentioned the Top Gun Theme and not Danger Zone.

Actually you’re right. Now that I listened to it it’s the guitar instrumental theme. “Danger Zone” is commonly referred to as the Top Gun Theme too.

Nahhh. Everyone knows the difference between Danger Zone and the Top Gun Anthem. Unless they’ve never seen Top Gun before, but that would be just silly.

Oh and Danger Zone would be B.A. too. Maybe a Guitar Hero: Top Gun is in the works.
