Sega announces a new RTS, Stormrise

Nowadays, when a developer wants to have a go at making a real-time strategy game for consoles, the game is either ported from its PC brother, or it’s specifically designed for the game pad. Sega and the renowned RTS developer, The Creative Assembly, have chosen the latter path for their newly announced real-time strategy game, Stormrise.

Ditching the traditional eagle-eye view for controlling units, Stormrise will utilize a view system that will let players “experience the heat of the battlefield by leading your troops from the front line,” therefore something along the lines of the one found in Tom Clancy’s EndWar. In addition to ground control, the game will also allow for commanding units in the air, across rooftops, and even underground. The Creative Assembly promises that easy unit selection, rapid navigation, and precise deployment will be enabled by a “simple yet effective” control system built from the ground up for consoles.

Commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director at SEGA Europe:

“The Creative Assembly have proven their general leadership in developing RTS games through the award winning ‘Total War’ series on PC”, “However, Stormrise has been built from the ground up specifically for high def consoles to provide a more intense, frenetic style of game that, coupled with the all new control mechanic, will revolutionise the way RTS games are played.”

Stormrise is slated for release in 2009 on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

When are people going to realise that putting RTS on consoles simply doesn’t work? I’ve yet to play a console RTS that actually gives you a reasonable sense of control over what you’re doing.

They are obviously trying RTS a DIFFERENT way BECAUSE it didn’t work… Read the post… Damn…

This game looks awesome, by the way.

Before I played C&C3 on the 360 I would have agreed with you. I’ve played several RTS games on various consoles and they’ve all been SO horrible, but they did a good job with C&C3. C&C Kane’s Wrath is even better, the menu navigation evolved a lot between those two games.

Agreed Mano.

When will somebody simply devote some time and design a simple mouse and keyboard combo that is designed specifically for the xbox 360.

Outside of RTS I think even first person shooters would reap the benefit also.

I have faith in the Creative Assembly. They can make pretty much anything work.

I must admit I do like FPS on console. That one’s more a question of taste or what you’re used to. But RTS is a different matter. That only works on PC, but yes, I agree, if we had a keyboard/mouse peripheral then maybe, but I’m not sure I want that on my 360. It’s going to start resembling a PC before long and I don’t want that.

While I would agree that it is easier on a PC I think it’s going a bit far to say it doesn’t work at all on a console.

I thought C&C and Lord of the Rings done an alright job of it, didn’t annoy me playing the game I do appreciate I could have made faster choices on a PC though.
