[E32008] Harmonix explains Rock Band 1-2 compatibility

We’re already aware that Harmonix is planning to introduce a yet-to-be determined fee (said to be under $5) for transferring your entire Rock Band 1 repertoire to Rock Band 2. However, what’s bugging us are Harmonix CEO’s words “most tracks” when announcing the feature on stage at the MS E3 Press Conference. Thanks to Joystiq, we now know the reason behind this. Find out about it after the jump.

During a recent chat with Rock Band 2 senior designer Dan Teasdale, Joystiq learned that an unspecified number of tracks, though a separate source revealed that “it should only be a couple songs,” will not be transferable to the sequel, due to licensing issues; presumably the reason as to why Rock Band 2 players will need to pony up a few dollars for the transfers. The unknown source also divulged that Activision’s exclusive deals with certain musicians, like Aerosmith for example, might prevent Harmonix from including the whole set list from the original game.

Does it bother you if each and every Rock Band track won’t make it into Rock Band 2 by means of transfers?

Like Timmy and the lord of the underworld.
My wrists bleed after that song.

If by wrist you mean ears then I agree.

And I love South Park.

Timaaaaaa!

Don’t need Train Kept a Rolling anyways. If it’s Activision causing it then maybe not Enter Sandman either since they are coming out with GH Metallica. Who knows. I’m just happy I can transfer some of them anyways. I’m buying a 60 gig drive for sure.

Train Kept A Rollin’ was a terrible cover of an amazing song.

As for the transfering, I think it’s freakin’ awesome! And for $5 it’s a steal.

I opted out of the first Rock Band for the 360 as my bro got it for PS2 so I played that. Let’s say I pick up RB2 or get it for chirstmas… I’m wondering if I can borrow someones RB1 or I have to own a copy that they have to prove somehow.

I’m still torn between GH4 and RB2… but whichever I get (right now leaning towards RB2 because of the shown commitment towards DLC) I’m sure will be awesome.

Given Activision’s terrible DLC track record and non-compatibility of all their different GH versions I’d get RB2. It sounds like you could just rent or borrow RB1 and transfer the songs to RB2. It’s still a win for Harmonix because you obviously have bought RB2 if you are doing this. I can’t wait for RB2 they’ve fixed every little problem I’ve had with RB1 and we have played RB1 so much since release (anybody that comes to my house who hasn’t played has to play it as well leading to quite a few sales for Harmonix) RB2 is no brainer for me.

Harmonix wins my vote everytime, due to what Neversoft did to the Tony Hawk’s Series.
Slowly but surely, they messed it up proper, with crap additions and lame gimmicks, forgetting what made the game fun and what skateboarders liked about it.
I see this happening very soon to the GH series.

That happened with Guitar Hero 3 if you ask me. Sadistic difficulty levels aimed solely at the crazies who could five star everything on Expert in the original games already. Difficult =/= fun.

This is true. Similarly, have you played GH: Aerosmith? It was crazily easy.

Battle Mode was a pile o shite too.

That’s when EA came around and made .skate.
Which in my opinion blows the Tony Hawk games out of the water.

@ UPR: They’re just covering their entire fan base … There are a lot of GH players who are freaking awesome at their games … that’s why there are difficulty levels.

That’s like saying there shouldn’t be a legendary difficulty in Halo 3, Veteran Level in COD4 … etc.

Play it on Hard if it’s that depressing.

As a huge fan of Rock Band 1, I am also committed to Rock Band 2. They promise 500 songs by the end of the year! I won’t miss the Aerosmith song if it’s gone. I don’t think Enter Sandman would be leaving as Metallica is appearing on Rock Band 2. I hope they take off all of the “non-master” recordings actually, and re-release the masters at some point as DLC, if possible (Green Grass and High Tides!)

Ya, I’m leaning toward RB2 for sure. But I will 100% be getting GH: Metallica when it comes out. That will be a cool game.

I’m still getting GH:WT as the whole bundle, and just the RB2 game. I just hope that RB 2 still allows us to use the GH controllers.

Comment by Worms on 2008-07-17 16:53:57 | Reply

It will all previous controllers will still be compatible.
