Xbox 360 price drop confirmed for the US

At long last, the USA have got what they’ve been so desperately waiting for, a price cut across all three Xbox 360 SKUs. Having seen Japan getting a price drop only this week, it almost seemed inevitable that Microsoft would leave out its home country. Hit the jump to see what’s been slashed.

The new prices are:

Xbox 360 Arcade: $199
Xbox 360 Pro: $299
Xbox 360 Elite: $399

The Pro and Elite have seen $50 wiped from their price, while the Arcade version has seen a whopping $80 removed and all take effect on the 5th September. Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft was pretty pleased about the price cuts:

“We are thrilled to be the first next-generation console on the market to reach $199, a price that invites everyone to enjoy Xbox 360. Xbox 360 delivers amazing performance at an extraordinary value with the leading online service and best lineup of games, downloadable movies and TV shows available from a console. The majority of consumers make the decision to buy consoles once the price falls to this mark, making this an important milestone for consumers and the industry.”

Sales of the console have been slumping recently, so this new price cut will hopefully mean Microsoft start to see the 360 fly off the shelves, just like the old days. We shall see.

I want the elite but I still don’t wanna pay 399.99 for it.

Microsoft Japan is already actually paying people to take the machines, with little success.”We hope more people will be able to enjoy Xbox 360,” said marketing marketer Takashi Sensui, “and we can stop enjoying quite so many of them. We also have this fine pile of HD-DVD drives … Wait! Come back!” http://notnews.today.com/?p=63

Its time for a new console, this one has been out long enough, get it retired and lets move on. A new console every 5 years is good. I can’t understand why people are happy to use the same console for 10 years or more. Its stupid. Get new technology used. Some people out there must still be using black and white valved TV’s.
