Fallout 3 censored worldwide
After the Australian classification board, the OFLC, forced Fallout 3 developer Bethesda to alter certain aspects of the game in order to gain a rating, it seems Bethesda has seen fit to make the cosmetic changes a global thing. Therefore every region is on course to getting the censored version.
The problems stemmed from the in-game drug use, such as injecting morphine to ignore pain. The OFLC weren’t happy at this apparent drug promotion, thus refusing classification. It seems all drug names have been changed to fictional names, in order to present to the world that these drugs are only in-game. Previously Bethesda had used real-world drug names, adding to the realism.
Bethesda’s vice president of PR and marketing Peter Hines spoke to Edge about the matter:
“We want to make sure folks understand that the Australian version of Fallout 3 is identical to both the UK and North American versions in every way, on every platform.” An issue was raised concerning references to real world, proscribed drugs in the game, and we subsequently removed those references and replaced them with fictional names. To avoid confusion among people in different territories, we decided to make those substitutions in all versions of the game, in all territories. I didn’t want people continuing to assume the version in Australia was some altered version when it’s not. There are no references to real world drugs in any version of Fallout 3.”
So Australians need not worry, everyone will be getting the censored version. Thanks a bunch!

No problems we are happy we arent the only ones to suffer lol. But seriously, its only such a tiny change to the game (renaming something) have a cry if you have such a problem with it…
Well, that’s not so bad at all. The rabid Fallout fanybys will no doubt remember that the drugs in the first 2 games also had silly, fictional names. I’m not sure why Bethesda chose to break with this tradition & go with real names - it’s not like the world of Fallout is grounded in a realistic view of our own. I wonder if they did this in order to give the ratings boards something to latch onto, so they could remove it and show that they were willing to play ball.
Good theory its probably true.
what!!??? So by the sounds of it the drug taking still takes place, just the names are different?? what was the point in that??? Thats like saying “we don’t want to encourage people shooting things, so we’ll replace all of the guns with different types of fruit, but they still shoot bullets and kill people”
Give it an 18+ rating, don’t sell to kids and let older people decide whats right for them!!!!
The OFLC don’t have any higher rating than MA 15+, so the game has to be acceptable for those 16 and over, not 18 and over like in the UK/EU/US. Hence the refusal for classification in AUS, but not in the UK/EU/US.
Does seem like an over-reaction, quite illogical too; last time I looked Call Of Duty 4 & GTA IV had real world weapon names in them? I guess shooting up people is fine, just shooting up isn’t…
That is Gay
’tis indeed.
At first glance I was shocked, mad even. But having thought it over I can understand the reasons why. Fallout always had funny semi-real names for everthing in te world, so it’s fitting if they do the same for the drugs.
As long as they don’t tone down the gore, I don’t mind popping a few Stimpacks intstead of Asprines.
This is how it starts though. First they bitch about something small and it gets changed. Then it becomes bigger and bigger and bigger until every fucking game becomes Mario style censored. It’s ridiculous in this day and age that governments don’t feel that people are smart enough to see the difference in real life and games. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go chainsaw a couple of people and sticky nade them.
Mario has never been censored because it’s never had anything questionable in the first place, so I dunno what that’s about.
Magic Mushrooms anyone?
but will there be snake squeezins?
Although that is totally ridiculous…
They ARE only names of items in-game lol…
Can one of the drugs be called “ebaneza good”?
naughty naughty very naughty
As’ anyone got any Veras?
Luuuurvaly.
Down with Censorship.
Didn’t metal gear solid have morphine?
all because of some bullshit government across the world who has their head up their ass and wont rate this game……. fuck them then, if they cant handle it so what its a few thousand less. its their own fault for not having a right to free speech. fuck fallout 3, i dont care to use BOBOJUANA anyways, give me the real shit jack, throw those aussie bastards in a sting ray tank.
I’d prefer health packs over morphine anyway as I’m allergic to the latter… it almost killed me when they injected it into my vains in a hospital once.
Censoring is BS. Always and ever. F3 won`t get closer to Fallout, not before / nor after this anyway.
strange that you can watch the news and see people fighting wars bombs going off and the aftermath of drug use and murders but they can’t seem to certificate games and let adults make there own choices Ive been playing gta 4 for ages and ive never felt the urge to stick a gun in someones face and steal their merc clk maybe its just me ……
although after playing COD 4 i did feel like going to iraq and getting my head shot off so Mr George W Bush could have some more oil
Sony always wins baby, Sony always wins, YOU CANT BEAT SONY!
Hmmm you sound like that guy who was trained wrong in Kung Pow…
Try my nuts to your fist style
Not a big deal. Stop whining about it and move on with your life.
Boo on Bethesda, pushovers! Get some balls why don’t cha. We need more game developers with cajones.
Just wanted to point out that it is “cojones” ;). Anyway, I think that developers are in this business because of money, so if changing some names gets them more money, it’s just OK for me as far as it doesn’t go too ridiculous.
I take morphine everyday… twice actually. 100 mg slow release tablets… unless I bite them. (which I do accidentally every once in a while.)
ummm errr….I forgot what my point was. I must have bite my last pill.
Ouch… Charlie bit me!
Ah well.. after fallout 1 and 2 I was already used to fictional drugs like jet or rad-x, what I need to know is if I can still kill those f.cking annoying kids!
