Yeah, if you like tragically cliched rock music, then it must be great.

Comment by Worms on 2008-10-12 12:36:10 | Reply

You should look up the word cliche I think. How can the 80s hair metal bands be cliched? What would it be cliched to? There wasn’t any hair metal before that to be a cliche of.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2008-10-12 22:33:32 | Reply

In the respect that so many metal bands are cliches of each other.

Long hair, wearing black, gothic imagery, pseudo religious lyrics, posturing, mind-numbingly, self-indulgent guitar solos that focus more on technical skill than melody, drop d tuning, unoriginal uninspired chord progressions centred around the root chord of the key. Need I say more?

It’s rare to see a metal band break the mold and come up with something that doesn’t involve most of the list above. I like some metal bands, but not if they’re hackneyed and lazily unoriginal. Perhaps you prefer that description as you didn’t seem to understand what I meant by cliched.

Peace, out.

You realize that Motley Crue is none of those things, right? I dislike them, but they’re nothing like what you said.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-10-13 01:15:35 | Reply

Also, if you want to complain about drop D, complain about Rammstein first. Until recent years everything they made sounded the same.

We’ll have to agree to differ then.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-10-13 20:43:27 | Reply

There’s a very, very big difference between 80s hair metal and modern metal, which is what you were complaining about. =P

I just dislike hackneyed lazy music of whatever era. Music is music is music. The period in time it was created is largely irrelevant to the points I make above, particularly when it comes to metal as not very much has changed since Black Sabbath.

If I really wanted to “rock”, the last thing I would do would be to conform to such a regimented standard of form and content as metal. It would have to be more innovative than that.

I guess that’s why I’m a little surprised by you mentioning Rammstein. They may be consistent to themselves in many ways, but they have a very distinctive and recognisable sound which doesn’t sound like the majority of metal bands. I don’t really perceive Rammstein as being a metal band per se anyway as they cross over too many genres and musical boundaries to be labelled in such a poor fashion.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-10-15 03:12:43 | Reply

Well, I don’t consider them metal (not that I think they’re bad, mind). But until the past few discs, Rosenrot and Reise, Reise in particular, a lot of their stuff sounded like what they’d already made to me. They don’t go very far beyond industrial rock in most cases, and the most variation I found in a lot of their stuff came in the lyrics (which can be devastating sometimes), and notsomuch the rest of the music. Particularly in Richard Z’s realm.

I agree, if I were to rock out in a band, it probably wouldn’t be in metal. I don’t think the genre is devoid of talent, though. One of my favorite bands in the entire world (which got its start giving away music for free, disproving the “only Radiohead can do it” idea) is a metal band that blends sounds from the Commodore 64 with very original and well-composed music, no screaming to be found.

I feel like a lot of the time, the good stuff is there; it just has to be looked for, past the surface. :)

I quite like Dream Theater. They’ve got a great epic sound going there with some great melodic content.

In terms of Rammstein, Rosenrot is a great album. Tu Quiero Puta. Mexican folk music meets industrial metal. And these guys make it work. Their stage show is absolutely the best I have ever seen. You should see them, if you haven’t already, to appreciate them fully.

Heard a great metal band recently, they were wandering towards death metal, but they were mixing in a lot of Classical Egyptian folk tunes in there as well and it sounded really good. It’s a tough genre, because it’s so riddled with cliche, but it’s the bands who try to do something different with the genre that I like. I guess that’s why I like Rammstein. They use a lot of keyboards, sequenced stuff, sampled stuff, choirs, they even got Sharleen Spiteri to sing on the last album! You can’t get much more radical than that. ;-)

Dream Theater is a little too epic for me. :P I was traumatized from the moment I heard one of their 24 minute songs. You can’t really complain about guitar solos that focus more on technical skill over melody and emotion and not include them. They wank on their instruments like divorced men living in a singles’ apartment complex. By-products of the Berklee College of Music, right out of my home town.

Rammstein’s stage show is good, there’s no question. When your members are all trained in pyrotechnics, it’d have to be. I’ve heard they’re coming on tour, soon. Although, the last time they played in my state, they got arrested. =x And this is in the first state to legalize gay marriage.

I think the band you’re thinking of might be Nile. Super-technical, almost robotically efficient, it’s ridiculous, but not wank-like. I’m afraid I’ve never heard of Sharleen Spiteri. :P

Lately I’ve been leaning towards “folk metal”. Bands like Turisas, that dress in furs and play with fiddles and accordions (very well, I might add) as well as guitars. They even did a cover of the song “Rasputin” by Boney M! :D There’s also a band from Scotland named Alestorm… they’re “pirate metal”. Need I say more?

Yeah watch the good tracks off the album sell a ton. There’s weekly Rock Band DLC and it’s news why not report it?

Comment by slug on 2008-10-14 19:21:10 | Reply

Here’s an idea: Make your own website, and report whatever the hell you want to. Then you wont worry about what this one is reporting.

And there ARE other games out there other than Halo 3. Shocking, I know.

Comment by Takumi on 2008-10-14 22:08:58 | Reply

wow did i even say i like halo 3 FYI i hate halo, and its called an opinion im just stating that these days its alls xboxic seems to go on about, which is true.

Honestly, news is pretty dead at the moment. This is because of the mass of amazing games coming out within the next months, and after that, the waters are calm for a longgggg time.

Developers aren’t going to be giving you much info on a game that is so close to being released =D

Comment by Nekro on 2008-10-16 21:09:01 | Reply

slug, your hatred for Halo 3 is showing just a bit strong today. Take off that “I hate Gaylo3″ shirt and calm down a bit ;)

Yeah, Halo 3 is pretty lame as was 2 and the original but for some unknown reason people flood to the game like locusts. (I’m saying Halo 3 lovers live underground and never come out apart from to start a war with the rest of the world that doesn’t enjoy the pleasures Master Chief gives them all night long)
