FUEL - the largest playable area on a console!

Codemasters ‘FUEL’ the new open world racer is powered by cutting-edge technology and, using satellite data, features some of the most exciting and jaw dropping areas of America including, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, Mount Rainier and much more. In FUEL, if you can see it, you can drive to it, taking any route on or off-road. With a draw distance of 40KM, 100,000 miles of roads, tracks and trails and hundreds of race events FUEL’s epic world demands to be explored.

FUEL was crowned by the Guiness World Records this week as officially having the “largest playable area in a console game” for its “5,560 square miles (14,400 km²)” playing surface. Phil Wright, Producer, Codemasters commented:

“…to have this confirmed officially by Guinness World Records justifies our faith in this ground-breaking title. No other game comes close to offering the variety of environments, the range of vehicles or the sheer size of FUEL. It’s one of the most innovative racers ever, and we’re thrilled it’s been recognised as the biggest console game of all time.”

In celebration of such an epic achievement, the team have released a Tech Demo video which can be previewed above. It is however unfortunate that the game will be delayed for release by 1 week and should be available in stores on June 5th for the Xbox360 & PS3. A PC version will be made available at a later date.

When I was younger, I played racing games that took you from New York to California and sometimes Hawaii as individual lap races (Man I loved Rush 2 on N64) and I always thought it’d be cool to have an open world racing game where you can go anywhere you want. 100,000 miles of travel? I’m piqued. I’ll bet there’s an achievement for traveling from one corner of the sandbox to the other as well as racking up 100,000 thousand miles, and another achievement if you get to 200,000 miles.

I’ll wait for the demo.

My worry is though, with all that distance, it will get very boring and very lonely out there, unless of course they hem you into a small area for races, in which case what would be the point of all that play area. Personally i think this will not be that great a game as there has plenty of games like this with large play area’s and pretty much all of them suffered from what i said earlier.
For me the best looking (or sounding) driving game coming is ‘Rush’, which too me is best described as wipeout on wheels with muscle cars.

Im looking forward to ‘Blur’

Watch gameplay videos of the fuel, looks pretty good although most of them are quite old.

At the same time though, quickest route between two points is a straight line so there wouldn’t be much point in driving too far away from the competition

Blur looks really good, but DIRT 2 is the one I’m waiting for. I loved the 1st one, but I want a proper online mode this time.
