Germany to Outright Ban Violent Video Games

A German website has provided vital information regarding new laws coming into effect in Germany which could potentially cripple the country’s video game industry. It is claimed that German ministers have today agreed to ban the production and distribution of all violent video games, with the law only having to go through parliament in the next few weeks.

Germany Bans Violent Video Games

Ministers of all sixteen German federal states came together for a conference in Bremerhaven where it was agreed to forbid the production and distribution of all video games “where the main part is to realistically play the killing of people or other cruel or unhuman acts of violence against humans or manlike characters.”

The country has been hard on video games in the past with bans on Manhunt & DeadRising taking place, but an outright ban on every potentially violent game would result in a huge loss for the video games industry in one of its most successful European countries. The law would result in no Call of Duty, no World of Warcraft, no BioShock, no Uncharted, and no Grand Theft Auto. Any development firm based in Germany would have to outsource future project developments on a violent game since it would now be banned to even create any such content in that country!

Ministers are hoping the for the law to come into effect before the German federal elections this September, The minister of the interior of Lower Saxony commented:

“Violent games lower the inhibition level for real violence and spree killers always played such games before they did the crime.”

However for violent games and the developments of such games to become illegal, the law must be passed through parliament in which an outcome will be decided within a couple of weeks.

If you think this is a good idea or one of the worst mistakes ever for Germany’s gaming industry, then share with us below?

I was content enough with the idea that they censored the games a little… this, though, is way too much.

What the fuck, Germany?

It’s terrible… and to think that developers around the world lose a whole country’s sales…

Crytek for instance is based in germany!!!

Anyone else see the irony in this? Lol sorry I had to.

Anyway, what I don’t get is why video games? Why not violent movies or even violent books for crying out loud? Is it because video games are still considered to be a child’s play thing? Do they not realize that video games are universally loved by not just kids but by adults as well? And just like movies there are games for kids and games for adults.

This really makes me sick TBH. I feel sorry for every German gamer if this law gets passed.

Yeah Boo Germany.

Where can I get that awesome remote? I would totally shell out a hundred bucks for that.

Im guessing that the people who run germany are those people who think that all video games are the cause of people going crazy, there are such retards today.

Well, they did think that Jews were the source of all their problems previously. They keep hating on random groups long enough they are eventually going to find the cause of the world’s woes.

Next it might be vegetarians.

…then I’m doomed…

damned bleeding heart ministers with their asses where their heads should be.

“Violent games lower the inhibition level for real violence and spree killers always played such games before they did the crime.””

wrong. Spree killers existed long before video games, and guess what Germany, they’ll continue to exist well after this witch hunt is over.

Dangerous precedent, as most countries are run by similar yaa-hoos who are getting the wrong info. I think I should run for office to protect Canadian Gamer’s Rights.

A vote for Mass is a vote for progress!

Well if what they say is true then Hitler must of played alot of violent games.

Wow. Just wow. This sucks bigtime for German gamers but to be honest, I never got the point of just targeting violent video games to prevent violent crimes from happening. If they’re going to do this, why not just outright ban all different forms of “violent” media?
Heck, I’m not sure if they show CSI in Germany, but if they do, they might want to start with shows like that since they give more than just an idea of how to commit crimes, but they sort of even explain hot to avoid getting caught doing it.

Has Germany changed over the years

Congratualations Germany you have become even more oppressive than China

Well technically “Germany” didnt hate the jews but the Nazi Party did so there stop hatin on the country for that reason. But hate on em for this stupid waste of time but elected officials. Just like the gun debate here in the states when will they ever learn its not the tools that do the killing but the ppl that hold em!! Damn!!

Oh come on, a bit or artistic licence being used for comedy.

But the Nazi’s were the ruling political party at the time, voted in by the people (I admit with some questionable practices) and therefore represented the popular choice of the people of the country of Germany at the time.

But if you make it simples for every fucking wacko from east to west to get a hold of a weapon which easily causes death then you will get a lot more deaths caused by wackos with weapons.

The German Government is what I should have said instaed of Germany as a whole.

god damn germany that means they will ban almost every games!? Wii sports will be saved but boxing must be removed. !?!? That means Germany will be a boring and silent country after the games ban passed however it might be good in someways, because if it is passed, German people will be more active. Anyway, I fully oppose this because I love Battlefield 2, 2142, 1943 and cd4 modern warfare, if bf3 is released, I’ll buy it but… germany can’t buy anything like that. Poor them.

Would there be a workaround to them downloading the games directly from XBLG? I mean region and copyrights aside, there wouldn’t be any laws to stop them from downloading it if they so chose. As far as legal logistics, I’m sure MS would work out the kinks with Canada and the European Union. No?

OK before this hole ban on violent video games law appeared Germanys video game rating system was the strictest amoung developed democracies in the world but still bearly tolerable.
If this ban was to come into effect it would be the strictest rating system in the world far ahead of nations such as Iran and China in terms of video games.
Also lets say video games were solely responsible for the shootings (witch they were not at all) tens of millions of people play video games in Germany and a few lives are well worth the millions of hours of entertainment provided.

Not that i believe in this law being passed, but that statement was ingnorant, if that life was someone close to you directly caused by video games you mint not think the same, if a few lives could be saved id ban games in their shoes (only if it could be proven that it would save lives)

Comment by The_Glovner on 2009-06-09 21:55:29 | Reply

Ignorant statment yes, but the argument between video game violence and real world violence is a non sequitar argument.

You would be just as well saying eating red meat causes murder as some people who commit murder eat red meat therefore banning red meat will stop violent crime.

It’s a lazy excuse not to bother addressing the real root causes of crime and is the type of tactics used more regularly by governments the world over to quickly get the approval of conservative groups who generally don’t know their arse from elbow when it comes to the real world.

Comment by Takumi on 2009-06-10 11:24:32 | Reply

I know its lazy to point the finger at games, and i can understand their just tyring to find ways to cut down crime, however i agree that this is not the answer.

And the sad truth is when the crime rate doesnt go down their will still be a ban on violent games, but the german government wouldnt care since i doubt anyone of such a high place in society would care for games themselves and wouldnt understand the effect it will have on some people.

At the end of the day it isnt the games that kill people but stupid people that kill people.

But as a moral person if i knew it would save a life (which it wont) id ban them if i where in their position.

I wouldn’t be surprised if banning video games, crime would actually spike up.
