Ghostbusters on Xbox360 superior to PS3

Terminal Reality’s PlayStation 3 Ghostbusters engine has rendered the game shockingly awful in a like for like comparison between the Xbox360 and PS3 versions. Lens of Truth, a team who expose gameplay quality reported that both versions had noticeable screen tearing and aliasing issues, but that’s were the similarities stopped. The texture quality for the PS3 version left them shaking their heads in disbelief.

Let us remind you about an interview Terminal Reality president Mark Randel had with VG247 regarding his high opinion of the PS3 version before it was released.

“Personally, I want to show off our PS3 technology. We’re one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off.

“We’re running the same game for both platforms but if we made a PS3-only game, for example, you could double the amount of objects on screen that you’re seeing. The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3. We’re keeping the game the same over both platforms so we don’t want to take out any features,”

Following Lens of Truth’s like-for-like testing they reported:

This went beyond the traditional consoles rendering textures differently, as we’ve seen in other Head2Heads, the PlayStation 3 seemed to have ½ the texture quality of the Xbox 360 and in other areas, even less. This was present on all the PlayStation 3 textures, normal maps, spec maps, light maps, etc. even the dynamic shadow maps looked blocky and half the quality of the Xbox 360. To add insult to injury, the PlayStation 3 also had some serious compression happening on their texture maps resulting in banding and blockiness that couldn’t be ignored. One other issue that must be noted on the PlayStation 3 version is the actual game resolution. This is by far the blurriest ā€œ720pā€ game we have seen to date. If we had to guess, Ghostbusters on the PlayStation 3 is running at sub 720p.

It seems somewhat confusing how a game highly hyped for the PS3 and its capabilities looks somewhat a pile of crap! If you are fortunate enough to own both consoles - for a true HD Ghostbusting experience, Lens of Truth would recommend buying the Xbox360 version and we wouldn’t want you damaging your eyes!

Due to Sony having the rights to a timed PS3 exclusive with this title in the UK, Ghostbusters will not be released on the Xbox360 until October 30th 2009, whilst for the rest of the world it is available in stores now.

Hahahahaha!!!

The PS3’s 7 Processors must have really been maxed out LOL…compared to 3 of the Xbox360’s

Yeah, keep talking smack with your dumbed down hardware - it will red ring soon enough. lol

Actually, I got a new warranty, a free 3 month Live card, a letter of apology, and $94 from Microsoft when my Xbox failed (launch box, took two and a half years).

(In response to your name.)

My brother got a months subscription since his was taken out for two weeks.

It took them a year and a half to give me my refund. :P I remember reading about them starting the process on this site, though!

Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise, being home from school and not having a source of income yet.

oh boy here we go again..havent you guys noticed already both consoles have strengths and weknesses? i love my xbox360..half my games are on it but the truth is the tuth..i have a sony xbr 42″ displaying 720/1080i/1080p and i have this game (it looks nothing like they posted up there) as a matter of fact the only noticable diff is the lighting on the 360 version..im so tired of the screen comparisons…oh and to the fanboys..thats the ps2 version lmaol!! my little sister has it. we need to stop this bull everytime a new game comes out you need to compare it. screw it we are all gamers..we play on any system so as long as the game is good.metal gear/killzone looked beautiful and i know alot of 360 users who wanted them..then again gears looked beautiful and i know ps3 users wanted it..so start here ..this fanboyism crap is getting old. if you dont like the ps3 ignore it, if you dont like the 360 ignore it..[now someones going to take something i said out of context and repost it because thats the point of a fanboy..you guys take care

Sorry, but you have to be on some sort of high-class drugs to think that is the PS2 version.

The PS2 version is similar to the Wii version, where the characters have unusually large heads.

I actually prefer the PS3 video, everything looks brighter. Are we sure that the brightness and contrast were set identical on the two TVs?

Comment by Sean on 2009-06-16 22:37:00 | Reply

The PS3s overall brightness seems to be higher than that of the 360 by default. Looks washed out to me, IMO.

That is the only difference I could see, to be honest.

I have both. They are exactly the same except for the graphics which are much better on PS3.

Not according to the post above.

Why did you buy (or even rent) two copies of the game?

yeah it only came out today in the US so he’s another bullshitter…

Yeah Veritas - you showed me. In fact Microsoft is doing that for all their owners right? lol. By the way, while you are playing your game, don’t move your console or you will scratch that disk to hell. But it’s ok - Microsoft has you covered in a splendid way for that too.

yeah and don’t move yours - might need another console update which takes all fucking day!

PSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH - know that sound? Water evaporating, you’re on Fire!

Actually, my cousin got RROD twice, and after the second time they gave him free shipping, a $400 refund, renewed warranty, and let him keep his repaired Xbox. Now he has two, and none have failed since.

My point here is that MS has apologized for, and fixed, the RROD. Which is more than Sony, and many corporations, have ever done for any of their customers.

Where was Sony when my PS2 failed three times in as many months? Where was my free shipping, my refund, or letter of apology? No consolation to be found, and charges up the ass just to get a working console.

Really, as far as big faceless empires go, Nintendo and Microsoft are the two friendliest ones of the moment. They may put it up your butt, but they at least make you breakfast the next day. Sony never even calls you back.

The Xbox 360 NTSC version is region free. PAL region gamers can import.

Comment by Ray on 2009-06-17 07:08:02 | Reply

Oh yea. This is being reported on an xbox site. Why am I not surprised. You xbots are like little children. Get over it losers.

It’s being reported on an unbiased video game graphics evaluation site and delivered to you via an Xbox site.

Sorry if your brain can’t handle that logic.

All it looks like is the Xbox has a higher contrast and the PS3 has a higher brightness. This could be easily doctored in photoshop, dependent on the screen settings or the fact that the two consoles use different shaders. Neither is superior to the other, they are just different.

I would trust the graphics expert over anyone that says “it was shooped!”

Well, I do not own an XBox PleaseFixMe but the comparison photos do not lie. I doubt that Lens of Truth has any reason to distort the results.

I do not think the XBox is crappy. I just think the design of the shell coupled with the poor placement of the processor is what causes so many of the RROD problems.

…and yes, RROD still exists - my friend is making a mini-fortune from all the people with broken XBs.

Truth is, I would own an XB if not for the unreliability and the controller. The controller is better than the original XB but just a little too bulky.

or it could just be me needing to get used to it - I dunno.

The bottom line graffically is if devs started out developing their games on the PS3 THEN tried porting it over the XB, the discussion/argument would be over. Using all of the Cell processor doesn’t mean they did so efficiently. This article itself states that both versions had identical issues in other areas. It may not be a Sony vs. Microsoft thing here. It could just be a poor effort on the part of the developer.

Where’s Smitty?

Playing Xbox360 Ghostbusters…

Comment by stumpa on 2009-06-19 23:46:22 | Reply

he would if it was’nt too hard for him his mummy will only let him play viva pinata

In fact to be honest this game is probably shit on all systems - by the time it’s released for the xbox in the UK October we would have all forgotten about it and moved on to spending our money on something else.

“The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3.”

That comment alone proves how technologically ignorant he his. Number of cores is nowhere near the sole factor in processor performance.
