Patent for FPS using Project Natal by Microsoft
Microsoft has filed numerous patents for an upcoming first person shooter that will use camera controls to offer a smoother degree of control and aiming. The patent makes references to a game named ‘Brute Force’ (an Xbox Original Title) as an example to show how the camera system is supposed to work for squad based shooters.

Some extracts from the Patent Files detail the following:
βIn a third-person shooter video game, the viewing perspective is smoothly transitioned between an “explorer” viewpoint and a “ready” viewpoint as game conditions change. In the “explorer” viewpoint, scenes are depicted from a camera positioned behind and removed from a character. The explorer viewpoint offers a wide angle of view of the surrounding combat area, enabling the game player to scout the terrain. In the “ready” viewpoint, scenes are depicted from the camera as it is repositioned close to the character. The ready viewpoint provides a narrower angle of view to facilitate better aiming when the character is engaged in armed combat. The transition between the explorer and ready viewpoints tracks a non-linear path. β
βA technique for controlling camera viewpoints in a third-person shooter video game is described. Scenes are depicted from a camera positioned behind and removed from a character that is being controlled by a player. As conditions change during the game, the camera is moved smoothly along a non-linear path between an “explorer” viewpoint and a “ready” viewpoint. In the “explorer” viewpoint, the camera is farther removed from the character to provide a wider angle of view of the battle terrain as the character moves about. In the “ready” viewpoint, the camera resides just behind the character to facilitate better aiming when the character is engaged in combat. Selection of a camera viewpoint and timely movement between the two viewpoints are controlled to facilitate a more intimate feel with the character and to avoid having obstacles obscure vision of the character and/or reticle used to sight targets.β
This seems to suggest that you will be able to make seamless transitions between first and third person views using the camera. Whilst ‘Brute Force’ was only used as an example in the patent to describe how it will be used, the purpose of this patent could be for a much bigger upcoming FPS game that will use ‘Project Natal’.
Can you think of anything other than Halo: Reach?

I can’t help feeling that the die hard gamers are not going to want NATAL! Especially for first person shooters!!! IMAO
We shall see.
Agreed - all we ever hear is how a mouse and keyboard are more accurate for FPS’s from the hardcore gamers. Somehow, I think they’ll hate this even more than a joypad………
…as a person with two left hands - I struggle as it is! I’ve never been able to use a keyboard and a mouse - in fact I can’t use a mouse for anything!! I have this mouse-pen thingy..
Edit: 2 left hands is a term of phrase for people who are left-handed and left-sided…it’s like being in reverse … I don’t literally have two arms on the left side LOL - thought I’d clear that up!
thanks jay.
I have a pen tablet too, with Photoshop and Illustrator CS4, but it’s all so intimidating and scary, I don’t know what to do with it. I’ll take a class for it eventually.
…
Eventually.
I don’t like photoshop - best software I used back in my webdesign days was Macromedia Fireworks (showing my age) I think it’s Adobe Fireworks now?
i think that it could be fun im a die hard gamer and i dont mind useing natal which uses my body as the controller as for halo reach though i dont see this happening because bungie makes a lot of money of their game themed controlers
brute force was the first ever xbox game i played. i loved the coop, it was awesome at the time, not sre if it still would be if i played it again.
brute force was garbage
Oh, you have O in your name, could you be him?
