Activision Search & Destroy biggest online CoD Hackers
ModdedWarfare was one of, if not ‘the’ biggest group of Call of Duty hackers who had managed to use specially created software to play hacked online Xbox Live games of ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ & ‘Call of Duty: World at War’. With what could potentially be the world’s biggest selling game coming out this year ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2′ it would not come as a surprise that the software could potentially destroy the online experience for thousands of gamers sweating to get into some Modern Warfare 2 action! In an unexpected move, Activision have come forward and demanded the closure of websites providing such mod tools.
Xboxic have obtained a copy of the letter detailing ‘Unauthorized Infringements’

The website providing the software used saved game files and manipulated them in a way which allowed increased fire rates, guns that shot grenades, increased ammo, and instant revives without having to run and find the injured amongst other unrealistic settings! The move by Activision to demand closure can only be regarded as positive action to improve the online experience for us all.

I approve!
lol wrong comment box wipe me pls…
LOL - I wiped that comment as requested.
Owned!
I like companies who step up and take care of people who cheat at any means necessary.
holy shit! I actually complained bout someone last night who was using a pistol like a sub machine gun.
Uhh having a modded controller does not mean that they are “hacking” this is of a more serious nature like using aimbots.
How much effect will this actually have?
There will always be sites like this… it’s the ones that aren’t well known that you have to worry about.
Modded Warfare did not publish Aim Bots. Only single player and co-op hacking programs. There were topics giving tutorials how to hex edit your profile to bind commands to buttons etc. but that’s not the Admins fault. the only thing provided were co-op and single player modding programs which do not harm anyones experience as you’re playing with them.

CoD Tool cannot be used for any online modding, only co-op. The single player gamesave was modified in CoD Tool, NOT the persons profile, and therefore cannot affect online play. WTF?!
You know it is nice to see a company take control of a asset and demand that it be played fair. I agree you shouldn’t be able to modify a game you paid $60.00 to an upward of $100.00, Just like the company should be held liable for the games ability to be put in the hands of children under the legal age limit of such said game. Seriously though, as someone that has enjoyed modding video games for PRIVATE use such as when modding of.map files in halo2, I find no president that there should be any liable findings in the fact that code was used in order to modify a private match. Hense when a file that was created on a system I bought on a game I purchased of a savegame file that I created, I feel as though it is my property. Now I am sure that there are reasons for this but you will never be able to stop everyone, just like the reasoning for your game sells to underage minors.
That’s all fine and good that you used your modding skills for a a customs match where the rules of play were agreed upon by other players, and commendable even that you left it at that.
However, since you can do this, what stops anyone from doing it either? Albeit you’re a white knight, not everyone is, and a lot of people would try to exploit an advantage to up their game, and I am all for that, as long as it’s in the confines of the shipped game (or as updated by Dev).
Another thing, Activision is not responsible to who buys the game, they put the stamp for Mature Only and after that it’s out of their hands. If you’re going to question anyone’s lack of conscience on kids buying violent video games, blame the parents, anyone selling it, anyone buying it.
@ ESRB Rated M17 -
Activision, Infinity Ward and Treyarch have done a lot to actually help the mod community by releasing the official mod tools, free, for anyone that wants to use them.
This is not a case of modders creating game mods for the sake of modding. This is a case of hackers breaking the xbox live agreement and software license agreement by manipulating the game and ruining the experience for the general public. It is a violation of agreements that they made when they signed up to play these games online.
Go get em Activision!
Oh, also, It’s precedent, not president. LOL
Activision should STFU, if you are against this then you are against MP3’s and dvd ripping/divx as well. It is not illegal to reverse engineer software, or make your own software and profit from it. Cheating is a bitch, but Activision shouldn’t put out shitty software or have PS3 owners have easy access to their savefiles. The problem is not the modders, it’s lazy programmers.
1) You really need to help yourself to a programming book bud, cause your talking like a god damn retard. It is NOT the same as MP3s or ripping movies, you can not reverse engineer MP3s, you can not “hack” an MP3 and change the bass line for a song. You can, albeit in a different way, this is known as MIXING and for that you would need each individual track for that song.
2) Tell me how you would reverse engineer a movie so someone wasn’t holding a cigar or change a characters coat, tell me how you do that. I would love to know.
3) As for lazy programmers, I take offense to that, as I did an internship over at Silicon Knights once I finished college. Programming is damn difficult to do, especially in games that have been released in the recent years. It DOES NOT get easier, with every new little addition there could potentially be a ton of coding to be done. Programmers can not get a program to 100%, it would take years for a game to come out (and I don’t mean 2 or 3, I’m talking 5 - 7) if that were the case. Yes, people test this, but they test if the game runs, if theres things in the game that people would notice as they play the game, they can not test every line of code for loop holes, someone will find a way.
4) So what if they have easy access to their saves on a PS3, thats the way Sony built it and the programmers have to adhere to that, in no way shape or form is it Activisions fault for that.
5) It IS illegal to reverse engineer software, wanna know why? It is NOT your work, you did not come up with that coding, it’s the same as copy writing. Yes, you own the game, sorry correction, you own the DISC that runs the game. That disc is yours; set it on fire, break it, throw it around, do what you will, but whats not yours is whats written on to the disc. So if you change bits and pieces of a game for an advantage over the next person who owns the same game, ILLEGAL.
I await your rebuttal, if you can even muster up something. But maybe whats best is if you just “STFU”
You saved me the trouble. BTW PWND!
1) I slight misunderstanding what I meant was that it is the same as cd/dvd -> mp3/divx ripping. People reversed engineered codecs, protocols and even encryption as is the case with CSS with DVD’s. The same is now happening with Blue-ray.
2) See 1, this also allows us to make you own ringtones and enables artist to reuse AV content and make something new of it.
3) I’m sorry you take offense to that and yes I agree programming is hard and yes it gets more complex. On the other hand game company’s no longer develop their own engines they buy them and they can use libraries to perform additional functions. In other words it still is not impossible to program a game nor unmanageable.
Making a save game that people can’t have easy access to is not hard at all. It is a very tedious work and a very tiny part of making a game, therefore they remain lazy.
I assume you have some programming experience and surely you agree that making a routine for reading and writing a save game is very easy to do ( 1-2 hours work) unlike making a great 3d game (years of work).
4) It certainly isn’t activisions fault, nor the people who took advantage of it. It’s the developers responsibility that people cannot cheat. Here sony is at fault as well for making it so easy.
5) Here we disagree, first off it differs per country but let’s leave that for what it is. the DMCA explicitly allows you to do it. It’s illegal to to distribute the software as my own even if I make changes to it. But if I want to make a change to a program that i’m allowed to use for my personal use I can do that. Why because a lot of companies abuse their license power by vendor lock in. Like HP encrypting their ink cardtridges so that there cannot be any competition.
Although it’s a late reply I’m looking forward to your answer.
