Xbox360 Gamers Defecting To PS3 For Sequels

You do not need to read the title twice - you got it right first time! Xbox360 gamers are out there choosing the Playstation3 console as the ideal system for their game sequel purchases. Is this a sign of madness or has the PS3 controller suddenly become sexy again?

According to OTX GamePlan analyst Nick Williams:

Data on franchise lineage highlights an interesting trend between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 SKUs for Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2, the two top-ranking titles on the latest purchase intent charts - and also two of the titles with the strongest franchise lineage.

OTX data shows that 15 percent of those who plan to buy the PS3 version of Assassin’s Creed 2 own the Xbox 360 version of the original, while only 7 percent of those who plan to buy the Xbox 360 version own the original game on PS3.

The data highlights a shift, at least among fans of Assassin’s Creed, in favor of the PS3 — a “sizable portion,” according to Williams, of players who plan a console defection for the second installment.

Moreover, the trend for Modern Warfare 2 is the same, according to OTX. “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners,” Williams tells us.

The only logical explanation that could come from this is with the recent PS3 price cuts & PS3 Slim, gamers are purchasing familiar titles for their newer system which does happen to come with free online gaming!

What are your thoughts - have you been tempted, be honest?

You can’t go by the data of one study. of 2 games to say that xbox 360 users are switching to ps3. Is the news really that slow?

Since there is way more people that own a 360 than a PS3 I could see that more people could be getting a PS3 this year. I had a PS2 and a Xbox and see no problem owning both. AC 2 is also not an Online Muti-player Game and I would lend a thought to getting it on PS3. But for MW 2…HELL NO!!!Xbox Live all the way!!! The games are not out yet so we will wait and see.

Unless they interviewed every gamer in the world(which they didn’t) it is just a number they pulled out of their a**. Studies like this are nothing but a big waste of money. There is no way they can possibly get accurate results.

It is slow… but as I’ve always mentioned…u may know - may not… Im not around when MW2 comes through my letterbox!

It seriously will be slow news LOL

Misleading data: 15 percent of those who plan to buy the PS3 version of Assassin’s Creed 2 own the Xbox 360 version of the original, while only 7 percent of those who plan to buy the Xbox 360 version own the original game on PS3.

But given that sales for games on the PS3 have been lower for the last few years, it’s only natural that there would be a smaller percentage of gamers who are switching from one to the other.

Couldn’t give a shit really. Maybe a larger section of gamers have little girly hands and prefer using the PS3 controller.

For the record… according to the latest vgchartz:
32.82 million people worldwide own 360s.
26.06 million own PS3’s.

that’s not as sizeable as TK Chillin hopes, I’m sure.

I can’t put an exact reason on why, but I’ve been buying everything for PS3 lately as opposed to 360. I know i’m in a minority, but i definitely like the ps3 controller better, I definitely like the XMB a ton more than the child-esque dashboard, i have more hard drive space on my ps3 for installing, i have my ps3 plugged in hdmi (through my receiver, with my cable box) so it’s less changing of buttons on remotes to get the ps3 on, and it’s more reliable hardware.

No the PS3 controller still sucks and the 360 is still way ahead in sales. Where did they get this data from? They interviewed 3 coworkers or something?

I wouldn’t use a Crapstation 3 even if they gave me one, considering how Sony treated the EU when they launched the console in the US.

I guarantee that Kid2007 WOULD in fact use a free PS3.

Do people still think the 360 has no hdmi?

Comment by AugustusBot on 2009-11-07 02:10:40 | Reply

Why would I spend 299 more dollars to get hdmi for my 360?

So yes… 360 has no HDMI. For me.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2009-11-07 05:35:45 | Reply

HDMI is standard on the Elite. And it has plenty of HD space. And far more software support. Developers have a far better software infrastructure in XNA. I would have thought if you’re serious about gaming the XBox 360 Elite would be the clearest choice by far, especially given the shortcomings of the PS3 and Sony’s complete mishandling of their product. The only reason I would own a PS3 now is Blu-Ray and I’m in no rush to do that.

But, each to their own, I always say.

I’m pegging it on PS3 Slim sales - a lot of people, gamers that own 360s, have decided to finally grab a PS3 as well, and they want to test out the new hardware. That’s what I would probably do, anyway.

I’m surprised they picked ACII as a game with a strong “franchise lineage,” though, as opposed to… I dunno, Final Fantasy or something. Something that’s had more than ONE game released.

HDMI is standard on all models of Xbox 360, so quit your crying and start getting your facts right.

Comment by augustusbot on 2009-11-07 17:05:06 | Reply

you guys are retards.
HDMI is not standard on MY MY MY MY MY MY MY MY 360.

So when IIIIIIIIIIII game, IIIIIIII choose to use MY MY MY MY MY MY PS3.

you follow? I can type the words more times if it helps…

Yeeeeeah… lest everyone forget, the 360 did not launch with HDMI. My launch box doesn’t have it, same as AugustusBot’s.

i own both despite all the arguements for and against both consoles its all about the games i.e gears of war on the 360, drakes fortune amongst thieves on ps3 and games is all i really care about.HE WITH THE MOST TOYS WINS

If i had both consoles I’d buy ps3 sequels just because of the money it’d save me.

Comment by augustusbot on 2009-11-08 20:28:47 | Reply

how would it save you money?
(actually, my friend has had a credit card that gives him sony points for years now, he got his ps3 pretty much for free via reward points.)

Comment by Worms on 2009-11-09 05:26:34 | Reply

But oddly you choose to hang around an Xbox site and post about your PS3 all the time. That sounds more retarded to me.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2009-11-10 04:10:16 | Reply

Augustbot, I think you jumped the gun there. I wasn’t talking about your particular scenario at all. I was talking generically. So your comment regarding subsequent posters being retarded is actually… well… retarded.

Might be more distance in actually reading what people are saying before assuming they’re talking about you and your specific context.

its pointless to even add that free online service point. you get what you pay for and if you pay shit for their online service thats exactly what they give you. and why assassins creed 2 on ps3 the first one had ungodly load times compared to the 360…mostly because the 360 has a better everything inside. :)

Well, I have to be fair (unlike a lot of you guys) but the PS3 is starting to wake up and winds of change are starting the blow. I have a 360 (just one RROD) and 60GB PS3 from launch.

Up until Uncharted 2, I had bought just one game for my PS3. Every other game was on my 360 because it had better exclusives and the multiplatform games ran better on the 360 or it had additional content.

Not anymore. Batman is a good example of that in which the PS3 version had additional content yet to come to the 360. Madden looks every bit as good and runs just as well.

As for the online, don’t believe the hype. I still like XBOX Live better but its not worth the 50 bucks anymore. Anyone who tells you its worth it is an idiot and sipping the MS juice.

Even MS knows its not worth it and trying to give value by adding Last FM, early demos, Facebook and Netflix. Problem is that the PS3 is getting all of those and don’t need to pay the $50 bucks.

I have Modern Warfare 2 and purposely bought it for the PS3 though, I’m still going to get it for the 360. The online works great and every bit as well as LIVE. The only issue I have are the installs. Those are annoying but a smaller price to pay than the $50 buck for LIVE.

LIVE should be free of at best $20 bucks. At one point in time it was worth it….not anymore.

Here’s the bottom line: If PS3 keeps its FREE online service, and continues to make compelling exclusive games as well as getting all the multi console games, you will continue to see this purchasing shift, with the 360 losing more and more share. I have been been a faithful 360 owner for years, but I, like MANY others, don’t believe the $50 a year for Live nets you enough over the free PS3 service. I know hardcore online players disagree here, but thats not the demographic thats causing this shift. This demographic says, I get basically the same games, the same graphics, I can still play online, still download demos, movies, tv, etc, all for FREE, I can use my OWN HD’s, have built in wifi, and I get a blu ray player to boot. Its undeniable which is the better deal. AGAIN, I know hardcore online gamers who SAY they dont care about blu ray will disagree, but I say that the rest of us, and theres a whole lot of the “rest of us” can logically see the PS3, now with the price cut, is the overall better deal. Who cares about Twitter, last FM, or FB on the 360. You have a PC and a smartphone for that, and with the PS3 you have a browser if you choose to use it! Now…I am NOT a PS3 Fanboy, I have been faithful to the Xbox ever since I defected from the PS2 to the original Xbox, but now I OWN both. And guess what?, I find myself buying the multi platform games for the PS3. Im a causal online gamer, so free is free..sorry…and I USE the Blu ray player…( I’m also an orginal 360 HD DVD player owner, so I tried!) And theres nothing wrong with owning both consoles. Bottom line… its all about the games, and with the added value youre getting with the console and the service, right now, PS3 is winning that battle. What we need to do is stop all of this nonsense, standardize the hardware, and let ANYone make them. Let them provide the extra bells and whistles as far as media and online services, and let MS and Sony focus on making the best games they can..for the gamer. (Let Nintendo keep their Wii, thats a niche market with completely different demographics) That would gamer Utopia..for me!
