UK: BBC iPlayer launch delayed on Xbox360

The Telegraph has reported that a deal between both Microsoft and the BBC has still been unable to be reached because of Microsoft’s strategy of charging for all the content on Xbox Live which is incompatible with the BBC’s public service remit.

BBCi Player now on Xbox360

“Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing. It wants to ensure that only those paying for Xbox Live Gold accounts can access its additional content services and even then there is usually a charge on top to get access to those. For example, to access the Sky Player on Xbox, you have to pay for a Gold subscription as well as a Sky subscription,” explained one of the sources close to the BBC.

“This does not fit with the BBC’s model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible,” they added. The BBC cannot charge the British public for access to the iPlayer as it is already included in the licence fee This situation is a marked contrast to the deals the BBC already has in place with the other two home games consoles. Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 both offer free access to the BBC iPlayer. Earlier this month the BBC recently relaunched its service on the Wii and now offers its own dedicated iPlayer channel.

A BBC spokesman said: “BBC iPlayer has been extremely successful on PS3 and we recently re-launched on Nintendo Wii, from which the public response has been fantastic. People clearly want the BBC iPlayer on their gaming consoles, and we don’t think Xbox users are any different, so we’ve had discussions with Microsoft about bringing the service to the platform.”

A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment on this news, but it is understood that discussions are in place with other content providers, such as Channel 4 (4oD) and MySpace which could soon find a home on Xbox Live.

At present the only way to watch content from the BBC iPlayer on the Xbox360 is to use the Windows Media Center Options

Why not put it out now for gold members and work at getting it to silver accounts once its up and running.
I’d maybe use this. It would be good if 4OD came to the xbox. Its better. Inbetweeners on demand.

4OD is tons better, but either one would be nice.
Why the heck do Microsoft have to charge for it though? I can understand Sky with it’s subscriptions and packages already in place, but a free service like iPlayer?

What the article means is BBC does not approve of only letting gold members having access to this! This counts as charging for it, same with facebook, twitter and last fm!

The holiday season is always critical for video game manufacturers and without question Sony had the definite edge heading into Black Friday.

In looking around the Internet, one can see the PlayStation 3 is a hot-ticket item for holiday shoppers. As best seller lists for major retailers prove that consumers have responded to the top-notch games and those “It Only Does Everything” commercials. The 120GB PS3 bundle Amazon had, featuring inFamous and Killzone 2, used to be higher than #10 on Amazon’s top seller list but it has dropped only because they’re now sold out. There are two Xbox 360 games in the top 10 for Amazon - Halo 3: ODST and Left 4 Dead 2 - but the console barely cracks the top 100, which signifies that the games aren’t system sellers; those who already have the 360 are buying those two titles, that’s all. As for PS3 games, even last year’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is in the top 25, which is more proof that we’re seeing a lot of new PS3 owners. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will take a prominent place on the must have list throughout the holiday season, too.

Oh, and the PS3 is also the more popular selection at both Best Buy and Wal-Mart right now while the 360 isn’t really even close. So thus far, Sony should be very pleased with the PS3’s showing.

I will make posts relevant to the topic at hand from now on, or else be deleted.

Really nobody here cares about the differences between the Xbox360 & PS3 or who sells what and more of what… those who own an Xbox360 enjoy their Xbox360. Both Microsoft & Sony rip off the customers in different ways. Both consoles have pretty much all the same games - what is their to talk about.

Xbox360 been out 4yrs here and the PS3 has been out 2.5yrs… I really couldnt care less if the PS3 sold 1 Billion Units so long as the next Call of Duty came out on the Xbox360 too!!

:) Console Wars are for retards

As promised, Electronic Arts will be delivering a Dante’s Inferno demo this month. Small caveat — PlayStation 3 owners will be getting a two-week head start.

The publisher has confirmed that the demo will hit PlayStation Network on December 10, with the demo being made available for Xbox LIVE Gold Members on December 24.

ah nice Xmas present. I have a PS3 too I need to spend more time with it - but really they’re worth it.

Comment by f1maverick on 2009-12-02 03:32:56 | Reply

i will eventualy own a ps3. Im just scared of forking out all that dosh and not using it. I nearly got it as final fantasy was an exclusive. im glad ff isnt anymore.

Back on topic - Im wondering if console manufacturers are now competing over applications such as twitter instead of concentrating on competing with games. next it will be hotmail, myspace, bebo then bloomin friends reunited or something.
Im all for progression but i dont want a games console that can do everything you would normally do on the computer. A fully functional web browser would have been perfect. everything in one!

Once again, yet another thing I couldn’t give a shit about.

If I want to watch (Sky)TV, I will use my TV. If I want to log on to Facebook, I will use my laptop. If I want to play games I will turn on my 360.

About the only thing I do with them all at one time is stream a downloaded movie from my laptop over my network onto my Xbox to play on my widescreen TV.

Apart from that they all have their own uses that they will be used for, eveything else can get tae fuck.

I tried submitting news last week about Micro$oft’s amazing console update in which you would not be allowed to give them your moneys in exchange for a virtual puppy for your avatar to dance like a retard next to.

It was going to be called …

Console Wars
———————–
Micro$soft $trikes Back
————————

but alas, Xboxic threw an error when i tried to submit the news.

Comment by ukjay on 2009-12-07 16:49:46 | Reply

There will be no more news written by me here.

Could the news posting be made open to anyone and reviewed by someone before it goes up on the front page? It would keep it flowing. I would be tempted to write a wee bit.

Erm best off speaking to Rival on the forums about it. So long as you use a spell checker and re-read back to yourself what you’ve written to make sure it sounds ok.

I’ve stopped writing simply because I now think its pointless for the small amount of continued visitors. I have other commitments to focus on. Rather than just never come back I mentioned on the forums that Im backing away here because its so quiet :)

For this site to be back on track I’d say it needed a good 5 people to write 2 news posts every day. I’ve posted quite a lot between March til now and I’ve been more than happy to do so - but as I hobby now I can’t really continue it.

I quit Facebook too this week because its made up of ex workmates from various places really and a pointless use for me. I do like twitter though, quite a lot too…

Also its not just Xboxic which has died off, the only kind of sites which have frequent visitors (outside of the biggies like IGN, GsmeSpot) is Modding & Glitching sites.

With regards to the Submit News link - that has been flooded with so much spam, its hard to shift through whats news & whats not. With the little news writing here it is not worth having the submit news. It was broken in error during the site server change I discovered with the site owner ‘Curry’ but I asked if it could stay broken :)

Sent a private message to Rival with an example news post. Quite keen on doing it. Im usually up until 1 or 2am bored so i could do stuff then for a laugh. See if i enjoy it.
Dont blame u for quiting facebook. I mainly use it to talk to my close friends about the weekend and stuff. Iv got over 200 friends on it but have no notion on talking to most of them.

ah yeah well in 2 years I had aquired 20 FaceBook Friends haha…

Putting news on the wordpress news page to show here is like writing an email, if you have the time it is a doddle, and quite fun.
