Remember when Activision honcho Bobby Kotick himself went on record to say that all of the past Spider-Man installments pretty much sucked and promised that the upcoming overhaul, known as Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, would redeem the franchise’s reputation, much like Batman: Arkham Asylum did for Batman games? Well, while it’s impossible to tell whether or not it will be the franchise’s saving grace, it’s safe to say that it’s gone through quite a makeover, as shown by the recent reveal.
The plot still centers on the adventures of Peter Parker, however, unlike previous iterations, the aptly named game is divided into four different Spider-Man universes, two of which have so far been revealed as Spider-Man Amazing and Spider-Man Noir, with the other two set to come out of hiding in the coming months. To interconnect these universes and make it all relevant, the game starts with the protagonist trying to save yet another day by preventing a robbery of a mystical artifact that keeps reality in balance called the Tablet of Order and Chaos which just so happens to shatter into four pieces. Hence, four different universes. Naturally, all four pieces get seized up by greedy villains and it’s Spidey’s job to restore the balance.
The Amazing and Noir universes not only look different from each other but are also home to unique gameplay styles. Whereas the Amazing universe is very much akin to the universes used in previous titles and doesn’t play too differently, save for the fresh new environment, a lush jungle, the Noir universe takes a whole new approach by making stealth-based gameplay the core mechanic in a noir setting, complete with gritty, dark visuals. Also, as you can see in the game’s first trailer, the hero dons a new costume to resemble the Great Depression period in the Noir levels. If it weren’t for the game’s developer Beenox, the guys behind such gems as Bee Movie Game and Monsters vs. Aliens, we would go as far as to say that the game shows promise.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is scheduled to sling into retail stores for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii this Fall.
